Deaf community facing interpreter shortage

  • EXCLUSIVE: A lack of interpreters is becoming a growing concern despite sign language class enrolments surging by up to 1,000 per cent since the pandemic began.
Former Deaf Australia chairperson Todd Wright told Sky News the growing demand has put a large “strain” on professional interpreters.
The Deaf Society’s Kate Matairavula said the impact has caused her to book weeks in advance.
She said the visibility of interpreters during announcements on television likely caused the uptick in interest.

Unfortunately, being a child of deaf parents we sign what ppl call "old school sign" It is very different to what they teach now so alot of the older generation of deaf ppl don't have a clue what these studied interpreters are saying. I've had to jump in many times for my parents during critical meetings and correct the interpreter. It's very frustrating for all of us.

The problem is Auslan - Australian sign language is used in a small community to begin with, and that sign language isn't transferable to other countries. It will make no sense in the US - so you can't import translators either. Really, someone in the comments hit it - this might be a good time to look into AI /robotic with TTS (text to sign)... An animated/ auslan thing. Or just use captions. Maybe someone can explain why signing is important instead of captions? I use captions a lot. Not auto captions because those are awful, but human captioning.

I have said that here in America as well. they need to have that as an option for ASL in the classrooms and you know teach kids signs as an activity more so when deaf students are in their class. You know, have people come in and get student interested at a young age. I would love to become an interpreter but I just don't think my skills would ever improve good enough even after a few years because my spelling sucks. I also don't think I have enough money to continue in college to become an interpreter. I'm not sure I'm smart enough to take all the courses LOL. I've only been learning ASL for about a little over a year and i get nervous in person and worry the deaf customers i come across will get upset with me. I work at Lowes at costumer serves so it can be highly stressful. I sometimes under presser forget sign or how to spell lol. I love working with one elderly lady cuz she's very patient with me and is very sweety. She was so happy I was there cuz I knew enough to get across what she want and I understood her and she understood me i felt very happy i could help. When i sign with her i feel calm. Another lady i felt tense and just couldn't think to save my life.
