  • Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes conditions and treatment methods associated with pain of the ankle.
    High ankle sprain
•A high ankle sprain is a sprain of the syndesmotic ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula at the ankle.
•Diagnosis of syndesmotic injury is usually done by the use of external rotation stress view examination or CT scan. This patient may require surgery.
    Anterolateral impingment
•Painful limitation of full range of ankle motion due to soft tissue or osseous (bony) pathology.
•Soft tissue thickeneing commonly seen in athletes with prior trauama that extends into the ankle jint.
•Arthroscopy of the ankle may be helpful .
•Tibisl bone spur impinging on the talus can become a source of chronic ankle pain and limitation of ankle motion in athletes. Osseous (bony) spur on the anterior lip of tibia contacting the talus during dorsiflexion. The patient may need debridment of the spur.
    Ankle sprain
•Pain that is anterior and around the fibula can usually be attributed to a ligament sprain.
•Sprains result from the stretching and tearing (partial or complete) of small ligaments that can become damaged when the ankle is forced into an unnatural position.
•Treatment includes immobilization, ice therapy, physical therapy and rarely surgery.
•With ankle sprain, the patient will be able to walk, but it will be painful. With a fracture, the patient will be unable to walk.
Pain that is posterior to the fibula can usually be attributed to an injury of the peroneal tendons.
    Lateral ankle pain
•Patients with peroneal tendon problemes usually describe pain in the outer part of the ankle or just behind the lateral malleolus.
•Problems mainly occus in the area where the tendons of the two muscles glide within a fibrous tunnel .
    Peroneal inflammation/ tendonitis
•Tendons are subject to excessive repetitive forces causing pain and swelling.
    •Peroneal tendon subluxation
•Usually occurs secondary to an ankle sprain with retinaculum injury.
•Occurs with dorsiflexion and usually eversion of the ankle.
    Posterior anle pain
    Achilles tendonitis
•Irritation and inflammation due to overuse.
•Pain, swelling and tears within the tendon.
•Achilles tendon can become prone to injury or rupture with age, lack of use or by aggressive exercises.
•The Thompson test is performed to determine the presence of an Achilles tendon rupture. A positive result for the thompson’s test is determined by no movement of the ankle while squeezing of the calf muscles.
    Posterior ankle impingment
•Os trigonum or large posterior process of talus (stieda syndrome)
•Common among athletes such as ballet dancers.
•May be seen in association with flexor hallucis longus tenosynovitis.
    Tarsal tunnel syndrome
•Compression or squeezing on the posterior tibial nerve that produces symptoms of pain and numbness on the medial area of the ankle.
•When conservative treatment methods fail, surgical treatment or tarsal tunnel release surgery may be needed.
Posterior tibial tendon tears are one of the leading causes of failing arches (flatfoot) in adults.
    •Too many toes sign
    •Loss of medial arch height
•Pain on the medial ankle with weight bearing
    Arthritis of the ankle joint
•Commonly the result of a prior injury or inflammation to the ankle joint.
•Can usually be easily diagnosed with an examination and x-ray.
    Osteochondral lesion of the talus
    •Arthroscopic debridment may be necessary.

hi viggy i was in a similar situation, i sprained my ankle during work one day but did not go to doctor for a couple of days after. had to stay off work for something like 3 weeks. i did also play basketball and had to stay off that for a while too. i decided to go back playing basketball and 1 night we were just having a practise game on the court as part of training and i got pushed by another player it was by accident and i ended up re spraining the same ankle.

Thank you, Doctor Ebraheim. The information was so very helpful in the understanding of the symptoms associated injuries. I have a sudden pain when i placed my foot side ways of my bed..and a sudden pain. Not sure what exactly or how it really happened..but it is occurring daily especially as I had mentioned earlier. Had twisted my ankle from a basketball game over a decade ago, that's all. Please feel free, perhaps you like to comment. Sincerely appreciate it.

Dear Dr. Nabil, a couple of wekas ago I got an injury in football where someone stood on my ankle. I went to the hospital and found out that I tore ligaments in my ankle. I have not played football since September 29th. I currently have another 2 weeks until my ankle is ok meaning I would have not played football for around 6 weeks. Should I go straight back into football or strengthen my ankle first? If so how and how many weeks shall I do it for?

Hello! A couple days ago I had a lot of exercise after a couple weeks without it. My whole body was sore afterwards, but my ankle/foot hurt slightly more. The net day it was fine, but the day after iit started hurting. The pain is on the left side of my left foot. Sometimes it throbs, sometimes I dont feel a thing unless I move it. When I move it, for example upwards, it doesn't hurt going up but on the way back down into a relaxed position, it really hurts right under that bump PART TWO NEXT

  • @calluscrazy7651
    @calluscrazy7651 10 ปีที่แล้ว

PART TWO: on the outsideofthe foot. If you put pressure on it in any way, I don't feel any pain, it's just when I move my foot. Please help I went to the hospital and they said a sprain of the common collateral ligament or something if you could comfirm this that would be great!

When I walk any distance, particularly uphill, I get a numbing pain that often runs up the back of my ankle, running as far as up as my lower calf. Running doesn't seem to cause it though, just walking. My feet have a tendency to point inwards as well which i'm convinced is putting more pressure on my ligaments. Can anyone suggest what my problem is and how I can aid this? Thanks.

Doctor, I am a basketball player, i twist my ankle quite often, may be once every 2 months. The pain lasts for 3 or 4 days, but it feels quiet lose for a while even after the pain is gone. These days even when I twist my ankle it doesn't even hurt much. Will this have a bad impact on my ankle in the future??? I am 25 years old. Should i go meet a doctor and see why i get a twist this often even though i wear shoes with ankle support..

I wonder if i am one of those rare cases that needs surgery for ankle sprains. I have probably sprained my ankle around a hundred times in my life. It is at a point where i can nearly position my foot 90 degrees inwards. I think my tendons are either teared off or are so long now that i am in constant fear of spraining my ankle. Also if i move my foot around it makes many crackling sounds and some positions hurt.

Hello Dr. Ebraheim, Everytime I stand on a tennis ball just infront of the ball of my heel (towards the back center of my foot I get a sharp pain on the top side of my ankle (A deep pain in the ankle joint.) I got this injury by kicking a soccer ball with my toes pointed towards the ground.
Do you by any chance know what this injury is?
I have been going to a physiotherapist for 7 weeks and still no progress..

Question i torn a ligament and waiting to see a specialist to get an operation tho i get most of my pain on the right side of my ankle
its been past 6 months not as bad as the first month of my injury
any ways i also get a lil pain behind my ankle and a lil on the left side but nothing compare to the pain on my left side ankle, even swollens up time to time walking to much
is this caused by one ligament problem or can it be multiple?

good video, especially after 14 seconds as now I can see on a picture what the doctors told me the problem with my talus bone. I fell from the stairs and my ankle suffered inversion injury, not only was my anterior talofibular ligament torn, but they also said that talus bone was ' compressed ' and could'nt visualize what happened, but now I see the the talus bone on the inside hit the tibia.

2 months ago i was playing basketball and i tore the ligamentsin my ankle. I had to use crutches with a splint for about 3 weeks and then i was put in a walking boot for an additional 2-3. It healed ok but was still sore, and i was given the ok to play sports again. yesterday the same freak thing happened while playing basketball yet again. I came down from a rebound and heard and felt the snapping in my ankle. Went to hospital or an x rayand ofcourse no broken bones, and they sent me home.

Ok, i am a major skateboarder who competes in competitions and stuff like that. About a year or 2 ago, i fell and sprained my ankle really bad. I could not skate for 4 months. Ever since then, it has been a recurring injury. Barely twisting or spraining my ankle can result in me being off my skateboard for up to a month. I rest it, ice it, and try everything to get it to heal. When it feels perfect, i go skate. Then maybe in a couple of months or weeks, it happens again. Sometimes it just rando

once your ligaments are injured they never return back to the same as they were prior to the injury they are like a rubber band once stretched they don't go back to the same shape because they dont have a good blood supply for healing and at best it can take up to 1 year for a ligament to heal. physio exercises will help such as range of motion to keep your ankle from stiffening up if you can swim that is also great.

    *QUESTION*
I'm a runner, I sprained my ankle 4 months ago, I took 6 weeks to recover and then i started running again with no problems, I ran up to 10 miles a day no problem! But yesterday I ran 4 laps on an athletics track in a left hand loop (on my injured side) and I ran fine but the next day my ankle was hurting pretty bad, and my shins got really stiff and sore. I'm wondering what causes this flair up please!? I've felt no pain all summer be after running on a track suddenly pain has returned!!

Rhys Nichols I am a high school soccer player and have had repeated sprains, I can run on grass no problem but the change in surface as in turf, artificial grass, and a track are all bad on your ankles if they are not completely healed because of the solid or hard ground under them and can make it worse. I recommend building up your pace if you want to run on a track start super slow then go faster until it feels normal...just my advice

I remember I sprained my ankle when i was in 9th grade. My left ankle hurts like crazy when i tried to walk , and also the ice therapy helps me a lot and a good rest. It was fine but i've noticed that the bones on the side ( i dunnu whats called omg huhuhu) is kinda bigger than on my right , which when i run or when i tripped it hurts like crazy @_@) but the pain is only for a few minutes then its gone.
Oh.. and also.. I used to rub some oil on my ankle ( i dont know what is the brand name since it was smudged ) , and wrap some cloth around my foot and It takes me like 2-3 days for the recovery.

I need a translation of the videos I've looked at. First off, I have plantar fascitis (sp) in my rght foot due to an abnormal gait diagnosed over 6-8 months or so(unsure of cause, possible dyskinesia which I have for over a year). I have custom or orthotics and solid New Balance shoes which helped a bit, also use a cane to work. Helps basically. Now over the last 3 weeks I have developed a sharp, stabbing pain (thave chronic pancreatitis, I'm used to pain but not like this) anytime my left exterior (small toe) side. the pain runs from just below little toe to base of ankle. X-ray, according to podiatrist. Her diagnosis is more orthotics which are okay as long as it can reduce pain. I do my best not to move my foot that direction but sometimes the pain just happens. Help?
