    Wow! I came across your foot stool upholstery video. While the upholstery was beyond perfect (hats off to that gentleman). But I was struck by the beauty and proportions of the foot stool sitting in the background. So I clicked on your TH-cam page only to find this round desk and was also blown away by both the craftsmanship, design elements and overall beauty of the piece. Just fantastic. Deepest regards and gratitude that you shared your work with us. Thank you.

    You are an inspiration to many, I'm sure. Your imagination and designing of custom furniture is amazing. I'm so glad I am able to watch your videos and as soon as my knee replacement heals in a few months, I'll be in the shop testing my skills. Thanks for what you do for the woodworking community Tom.

    Beautiful job. I like the drawer detail. I am in the process of building the exact same desk, albeit with traditional drawers, for my son and am scratching my head for the best approach for building the top for the leather inserts. I am planning to build it as a framed top similar to a door panel so I am hoping you are able to get the upcoming video you mentioned up before I reach that stage. I'm sure you will have a better approach. You do beautiful work.

      Michelle Roe Thank you Michelle, I’m so glad you enjoy the videos. I know how you feel as my goal was to get as much exposure with experienced craftsmanship in the early days.
      Unfortunately I’m not able to have students here, except when we have in shop classes, due to my unpredictable schedule. But I have been focused a lot more on “passing along the craft” these days through all sorts of video, with the best probably being the project build live recorded and live-streaming classes (these allow real time questions as well).
      The best way to connect with what we have going on is to check out our website epicwoodworking.com and to sign up for the mailing list there to stay up with the latest offerings. We just started “Shop Night Live”, a free livestream mastermind meetup the first and third Thursday’s of each month. Hope you can join us!
      Thank you again for your interest,

      Tom

    Hello Tom, first let me tip my hat to you! I just discovered you this Sunday night after finishing in my shop, your desk and passion is great, I will look to find out more about you, please tell me what made you change your mind to the small turn knob, I really like the hidden pull tab. All the best, Real N.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Real, I’m glad you finally found me 😎, and thanks for your kind words. I made the desk nearly ten years ago so I’m a little fuzzy on how the final choice happened with the knob but the piece the client liked that inspired the desk had similar small turned knobs which are “Shaker” style. So it must have had something to do with client preferences. I hope to make another one at some time, perhaps as a video course, and I will surely experiment with and show other options.
      Thanks again and thanks for watching! 👍😎

    I love the project but if I do it myself I’ll pivot the drawers towards the center. Excellent creativity and craftsmanship!

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stephen thank you! Yes, I thought about going the other way with the drawer curve, but favored the pivot being away from the user as it made the drawer contents more readily accessible...and I like the visual interplay of the reversing curves when the drawer was open...but as a maker, you could certainly choose to go either way with it. Thanks again for watching! Tom

    • @738polarbear
      @738polarbear 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Fink Your suggestion makes no sense . Think about it . The pin in the centre means you have to swing the drawer from both sides to gain access to full drawer ..Silly idea.

    I'm in awe. Amazing craftsmanship. Is there another video that shows the drawings, planning, and the laminating process of the angled bits? I'm particularly interested in how to go about a project of this scale. I normally brush off any meticulous planning but on the scale of your project it seems essential. Thanks, Shlomi

      Thank you for your kind and encouraging words. I’m sorry I have not made and detailed drawings and video regarding the half-round desk project. That was a private commission during which I decided to turn on the camera and make a little video showing some of the process.
      As time goes on and I build up a solid base of beginner and intermediate projects and video, I plan to add in more advanced projects such as this half round desk exemplifies.

      @@EpicWoodworking hi Tom, I'm so glad to get a reply from you as I realise the video is not recent! The reason I came across your channel is I searched for 'bending wood' on TH-cam and your project cropped up. Once I started watching, I couldn't stop:) but I wasn't wiser as to how you made the angled shapes. Did you ever document and publish anything on the topic? I'd be super interested in your own approach. Thanks a lot.

    Excellent work. I'm planing to make a demi-lune hall table for my wife. You've given me some inspiration. Only a true craftsman would think of putting a decorative veneered bottom in a drawer, essentially where it will rarely be seen. Did you consider making the drawers with two curved sides - one to match the radius of the desk apron? Was the curved drawer slide also laminated to eliminate short grain? Sorry for all the questions. I subscribed.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrToolmaker23 Thank you! Yes I did consider the options. I chose the inside curve because I like the visual interplay, the way it reversed the curve of the center front of the desk, and also for the way the drawer opens towards the user.
      The curved drawer side is laminated for stability and strength. That side of the drawer rests on a straight support board bridging across from the inner to outer arc of the desk.
      Thanks again! Tom

    Tom, the curved part of the drawer is actually on the opposite side of the drawer than what I thought it would be. How did you arrive at reversing the curve and the pin for the rotation. Thanks Gary Williams

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gary. Yes, I thought about which way to sweep the drawer curve. Given the curve of the desk, it looks like it would come out that way, but I preferred the way I built it for several reasons: access to the drawer interior contents presents itself better this way, the knob to pull it open is closer to the user, and I prefer the reverse curve visual interplay when open.
      Also, the radius of the drawer is set by the width of the opening, so that is the same with way.
      I responded previously to others, perhaps more in depth, to the same question if you are interested to look at those in the stream of.comments. Thanks 👍

    Incredible work, Tom. By chance, do you sell plans for this desk?

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, this desk was a commission for a client who saw one like it in the Thos Moser catalog (you can find it on their website) and asked if I could build one but customize it up a bit. So I made the apron about 7” wide, the legs “pillowed”, and the drawers pivoting. I have not made plans for it since it was based on the Moser desk, even though it was probably different enough. I want to add more complex pieces to my full-size drawing plans, but aiming more at the wider audience with more fundamental styles to build a base. So that’s a long was of answering I don’t have plans for the desk, but may at some point down the road. Thanks for watching! Tom

    It's a elegant piece of furniture, congratulations. But had you considered putting the pin hinge for the drawer on the opposite side of the drawer?
    You would have two distinct advantages: Firstly the draw support could be incorporated into the side wall, which would cut down on the construction time and effort. Secondly because the arc of drawer would naturally follow the internal line of the structure, it would probably be more stable, but more importantly it would maximise your use of the available space, and give you 15-20% more storage space.
    regards Richard

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richard Evans Thanks Richard. Yes, as you can imagine I did consider both options before deciding...and your ideas for the other way are certainly viable.
      I chose to hinge on the outside for two primary reasons. The first being that when hinging a drawer like this, the action of using it is much like a door and when opening a door we are always standing opposite the hinge side. In the same way, if hinged on the near side, opening is less than optimal because you reach toward the other side to open the drawer and the largest area or interior usable space presents away from you instead of close to your body when hinged on the outer.
      The other reason I prefer the outside hinge is more an aesthetic one (I think I mention it in the video), I like the visual interest and interplay created when the drawer opens and the convex curve reverses from the concave curve of the center section.
      But like I said, you can go either way with it, and that's just another thing I love about designing and making furniture. It's a beautiful possibility filled craft and art form!
      Thank you for taking the time to write and sharing it with me.
      Tom

      Sorry to have just discovered your comment today.
      If it is still relevant and of interest to you, I had to look back on the details and client proposal related to the half round desk.
      As I think I mentioned in the video, the design was derived from one in the Thos Moser catalog, www.thosmoser.com/product/radius-desk/
      My customized version incorporated significantly more detail and complexity. For instance the curved apron is 7” high where the Moser example is only 4”, the top features inlaid genuine leather surface, the drawers are radiused and pivot out, (Moser’s are narrow, small, and straight), and the legs are shaped and “pillowed” My price for this desk as described is $9,310 in solid cherry. If you are interested in proceeding or discussing further, you can connect with me directly by email, tom@epicwoodworking.com.
      Thank you!

      MGBWoodwork Yes, titebond III is very good for Veneering. It does not “creep” like white and yellow versions can, so it a nice product for use with veneer.

      Thanks Ben. I remember buying that apron probably fifteen years ago and can’t remember where I got it. It’s worn out since that video and I haven’t been wearing an apron since. But there are a lots of good apron makers these days...one of my favorites is from artifactbags.com/collections/aprons ...I just haven’t yet gotten to the point of being willing to pay the price 😎

      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom L I’m sorry to say I got on to other things and have not yet made that video. I am changing my direction back to creating more video soon, so you will see more coming from this channel...and I will plan to make fitting an inset panel part of them, mainly because you just reminded me I had said that in this video :). I got sidetracked in the last two years with taking on hosting a public television show called Rough Cut with Fine Woodworking (it is a national show and you should be able to find it in your listings if you live in the States). I’m planning the episodes for next season and will add a smaller type table/desk using the same technique of the inset leather covered panel. Thanks for watching! Tom

      brasswell1 thank you! Yes, I thought about going the other way with the drawer curve, but favored the pivot being away from the user as it made the drawer contents more readily accessible...and I like the visual interplay of the reversing curves when the drawer was open...but as a maker, you could certainly choose to go either way with it. What was the price to client vs cost of materials exceptional inspiring work

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually the cost of materials works out to be around 10% of the total project cost, on custom high-end furniture like the desk. This desk cost around $9K back when I made it, so I would guess the materials costs (including jigs and forms) were in the $600-$800 range for this one...a little less than 10%.

      Big Guns This was a custom piece based on one offered in the Thos Moser catalog (thosmoser.com), and as I recall it was priced just over $9, 000. The stock limited production version from Moser, which differs in a number of ways, was a little less.

  • @hawkesworth1712
    @hawkesworth1712 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't looked down the list of comments but I'm sure I'm not the first person to wonder why you pivoted the drawers so that when they were opened the handle would be on the opposite side of the drawer to the person trying to open it.
    I'm guessing the inside of the curve is where a person is supposed to sit. In which case, when the drawer is fully opened the person sitting at the desk has to either reach over the drawer to what is now the back of the drawer or use the side of the drawer to close it until the handle is within reach.
    It's a beautiful piece of furniture but if I commissioned it I would reject it because of the impractical drawers that are oriented toward someone standing on the opposite side of the desk.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hawkesworth1712 yes, you’re right, I have explained my choice for pivoting the drawer as I did in that direction, a couple times, but if you don’t mind scrolling down, twenty one comments to be exact, you’ll find a similar question from “Richard” to which I gave a thorough reasoning for my choice...but either would work of course :)
      Thanks for your interest!
      My Best, Tom

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should also add that commissions are preceded with drawings, plans, discussions and approval ahead of the build so there is no opportunity of a “rejection” as you say.

    • @hawkesworth1712
      @hawkesworth1712 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I saw Richard's question but it didn't relate to ergonomics (the opening and closing of the drawer) and how the handle becomes inaccessible to someone seated at the desk, once the drawer is open.

    • @EpicWoodworking
      @EpicWoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hawkesworth1712 I think if you had the opportunity to actually sit at the desk and open the drawer you would discover it is not an ergonomic issue at all. It is much closer to the user than it appears.
      It’s interesting that I had a similar ergonomic concern about the drawer, but more in consideration of opening than of closing it. When opening, it was easier to use the near knob as a convenient and comfortable pull to open and expose the contents immediately with access to those contents being closer to the user.
      In addition I preferred the design feature of the reverse curve interplay of the desk cutout in the center and the sweep of the curved drawer side.
      Thanks again! Tom
