This movie holds a dear place to me because the creator also did one of my favorite shows as a kid "El tigre: the adventures of Manny Rivera". You can even see the main characters at the start of the story as background characters.
Nothing will ever make me laugh like the sight gag of Xibalba appearing with a bottle of wine and two glasses after hearing La Muerte scream in literal incandescent rage. My man, how do you read the room THAT Incorrectly?! XD
Its a very fun movie that unfortunately gets a little overlooked due to coco later. Still one that I enjoy rewatching now and then, its a little more popcorny than coco who goes mostly for that pure emotion. Also love how they did Maria, not putting up with the BS but also not just angry and inconsolable, actually making points and accepting that while they may have goofed they have the capacity to change and improve. A little too much "I also learned x" but otherwise a nicely written character that works really well giving the 2 boys reasons for growth.
YES TO THIS MOVIE! I love this movie so much especially because Jorge who created and directed this had such a beautiful story. Definitely recommend Maya and the Three
@@theanimationcritictaylorri1264 They're totally different movies. The only connection seems to be that they both take place on the Day of the Dead. (Also, I second Clariss watching "Maya and the Three").
@@phousefilms I’d heard rumors about that being a possibility but that’s now in vane as I believe it’s The Disney Company anyway. It’s unfortunately come full circle.
People really line to conpare this movie with Coco. But really, aside from the setting, they're two VERY different stories! I like both, each for their own merits!
I know this is a longshot Clariss, but I really really REALLY think you would love the Netflix show "Maya and the Three". Its the same animation style, has a few of the same actors returning(Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana), it takes place in the same universe as "Book of Life"(even has a mini cameo of a few of the characters)and its only one season, so it wouldn't be TOO much of an investment of your time. Hope you'll try it out, at least!
When this movie came out in the theaters, my brother and I wore calavera make-up to watch it. ^_^ One of my favorite memories. As much as I like Coco, there are ways I prefer this movie. Thank you for reacting to it.
This movie definitely reminds me a lot of Coco. For some reason Hollywood back in the 2010s became obsessed with mortality. I remember this came out a few years before Coco. I really liked this one but I think I liked the latter a little more only because the ending made more sense. But both came out during a rough time in my life and helped me deal with a lot of spiritual crisis I was in a decade ago....
This is one that i saw on the big scene. The animation was incredible! I will admit i I as only able to talk my family into paying to see it on the big scene because at the time i was talking a spanish class and the teacher gave extra credit for spanish language or culture events. So that the one female character who has no personality didn’t need to be here. The story about this guy letting go of traditions like bull fighting is compelling enough. I enjoyed it.
I remember watching this movie in Spanish class in middle school one of the reminder of my traumas I had at middle school especially the 'Ill wait for you song really hits hard for me its a masterpiece
😎👍 Your reactions are always among the best. I liked the whole look of this movie. It's sort of what The Lego franchise would look like if Legos were made out of wood instead of plastic. There are still quite a few really good animated films out there that neither you or your fiance have reacted to yet. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" (2014), "Abominable" (2019), "Wonder Park" (2019), "Spies In Disguise" (2019) and one that would be particularly great to react to in November, as it's specifically about Thanksgiving: "Free Birds" (2013).
Loved this film! I was introduced in my spanish class way back in high school. We watched the spanish dub of course, and it was beautiful. I still prefer that version for the music!
Hey if you didn’t know there is a story on Maria and Manolo past life or so it’s confirmed and her name was maya it’s really cute and gives you more information which could help you understand this movie. It’s called maya and the three, you should watch it in your free time!
I watched this movie last night and enjoyed it. Coco was definitely inspired by it due to some similarities with each other. I love both films cause of the music, animation, and positive messages about friends and family being there for one another. 9.5/10
Jorge R Guitierrez Has Confirmed That This Movie Along With May And The Three, A Netflix Original Series, And El Tigre The Adventures Of Manny Rivera, A Nickelodeon Cartoon From 2007 Are Connected, With Manolo, Maria, And Joaquin Being Reincarnations Of Characters From Maya And The Three, And Having Reincarnated Into Characters from El Tigre!
Hi/Hola Well the writers/creators of this Movie were the same ones who created "El Tigre: The adventures of Manny Rivera" a cartoon broadcasted in Nickelodeon a couple of years ago. Didn't last much to be honest. 2:11 thanks to UNESCO, now it is considered part of "cultural non-material heritage" due to common heritage for several countries. I like your content, ten un buen día!
Honestly, you should do a whole reaction in Spanish, though adding the subtitles might be a pain🤔. Forgot how great the animation style of this movie is - going to have to re-watch.
Know it's unlikely, but check out the series "Maya and the Three"! It's by the same creator, the same animation and it's said to take place in the same universe(with some of the characters in this film being reincarnations of the series characters(not a spoiler).
OMG Clariss!! Your reaction here is Hilarious!! Love It!! Oh n Asian families are not that different as well; bringing honour n not shame to the family is very very real too, regardless for career, education, status, etc.
😮 actually that might be good for my version he might say: i...must....REFUSE! ME: (IN THE AUDIENCE YES, COME ON 😮 YES.....KILLING THE BULL IS WRONG! ME: THERE YOU GO!
Just wondering what your opinion is, Clariss ... When it comes to how headstrong and independent Maria is: How much do you think Maria reflects traits unique to latinas, and how much do you think that she has just a modern mindset (compared to all the men around her).
Tbh... i often wonder what would have happened if the dad had been a little less short sighted? I mean how .uch more enthusiasm would manolo have had to practice bullfighting if his dad didn't shut him down on being both a bullfighter and a musician? He could have gotten alot of attention doing all the facy work AND singing while doing so😂
I think most parents want their kids to be secure and do well in life, they just have very different ways of trying to make that happen. Hopefully in modern society force/guilt is going to go away.
Book Of Life is great. It's similar to Coco in the sense of Day Of The Dead, and family expectations, that being Shoe Makers and Bullfighters. My one criticism, is that they try to sell Maria as independent, but still have her going back and fourth, like a prize to be won. I feel like they were trying to go for Princess Jasmine, but low key missed the mark. Imo
Were you paid to watch this movie? I just noticed all the reaction channels released their reaction around the same exact time 7-9 months ago. Just wondering if netflix paid a bunch of creators to react to it so it'd get more streaming hours
I say this movie is better than Coco! It was pretty obvious who Maria had more of a romantic connection with....MANOLO!!! Also she was definitely a kick-ass senorita. Also that Xibalba was just a real scheming lying cheating fool. Also I'm glad you knew that Candle Maker was Ice Cube!😉😂
otherwise i liked it, but it really pulled me out of the story hearing recognizable modern songs in what wouldn't have been like, super recent times the museum part i understand if they had modern music, because it's a completely modern setting and those could have been songs the characters would be familiar with, i just think they should have done some original songs for the story instead

I love your videos it makes me in a better mood and this movie is awesome I watched it when I was a little kid in elementary so cool 👍
The Bromance between the Boys was everything. No toxicity only good vibes, love to see it
And their fights were never bitter just friends having a good time
@greywarden5513 True dat, plus the fact that Maria let them both fight for her made it more enjoyable
This movie holds a dear place to me because the creator also did one of my favorite shows as a kid "El tigre: the adventures of Manny Rivera". You can even see the main characters at the start of the story as background characters.

Oh my gosh, some of the humor in this movie is SO unhinged, I adore it.
Maria has always been my hero because of how honest and true to her boundaries she is, while also being kind and warm when she feels like it.

the Highly Expressive Spanish was such a highlight- I didn't understand more than a handful of words but the tone conveyed EVERYTHING

How close is the movie to COCO? I remember hearing rumors about PIXAR ripping this off this movie.

If you want a great example of the Blu-ray 3D format and why 3DTVs should still be around, this is it. 2D doesn't do this movie justice.
