What I love most about this movie, in addition to Kuzco's redemption, is the hilarious comedy duo that is Yzma and Kronk. I love how they bounce off each other, and Eartha Kitt (RIP) and Patrick Warburton both gave it their all wth their voice acting.

David Spade and John Goodman was such good casting
Also. .When Yzma said he "died" on the eve of his 18th birthday, that meant he was 17 which also means he was younger when he became emperor. Which explains his childlike behavior.
Thats why i like Pacha.. he challenged kuzko and became his father figure and taught him that theres a world outside of himself and it doesn't evolve around him

The promotional "storyteller" media for the movie also confirmed that Kuzco was about to turn 18 at the start of the story:
      Steven Weber: th-cam.com/video/nPsuCTI8qis/w-d-xo.html
      Tony Pope: th-cam.com/video/qAMCpuny3es/w-d-xo.html
Heck, Kuzco's story was revolving around him being turned into a llama, because he fired Yzma for trying to take his role as ruler of his kingdom; while having to deal with the Village Leader Pacha, who disapproves of Kuzco wanting to destroy Pacha's home to make way for Kuzco's birthday gift that Kuzco is giving himself.

The thing I love about this movie is that in every scene where Kuzco is spoiled or mean, he winds up being the harbinger of his own downfall. Notable moments include him being mean to the squirrel who pops the balloon while Kuzco is surrounded by panthers. But the panthers don't wake up until Kuzco laughs at him. Then there is the scene on the rope bridge where Kuzco tries to leave Pacha to die and ends up falling through as well. The message is crystal clear. And the best message I've ever heard from any Disney film. Also Eartha Kitt, Patrick Warburton, David Spade, and John Goodman are so great together. They have amazing chemistry.

In hindsight, the reason why Kuzco is the way he is because of Yzma. She states after he fired her, “How can you do that to me after everything I’ve done for him? When I practically raised him!”, to which Kronk humorously (and a bit dumbfounding) says, “Yeah, you think he would turn out better….”.
It’s also probably why Kuzco didn’t believe for the first time, let alone could figure out, that it was her that turned him into a llama. As he’s too ignorant to see that the woman who made him the way he is would ever harm him.

He needs that someone who while is willing to help him and not let him die or fend for himself as a llama, also isn't afraid to put him in his place and also teach him what it means to be selfless and kind. For one thing, let's remember that Kuzco is a teenager and clearly has never had an adult figure in his life teach him the values of empathy and kindness. Pacha was that person for him.

I've noticed that reactions to Kuzco have changed in the past generation. Older people tend to be more sympathetic to Kuzco either because we believe everyone can be redeemed, or because we are accustomed to movies and stories where such characters usually turn around in the end, and we anticipate it. One of Disney's best animated films
I think the film wasn't initially well received because it is so different from much of the Disney canon. It's much closer to the classic Looney Toons in its zaniness than say Sleepy Beauty. It is very bright and kooky in its animation style; it's a comedy in which the plot is basically incidental to the proceedings. Films like this live and die on their performances; the four principals of Goodman, Spade, Kitt, Warburton are all *perfect* in this film. Every time I watch it it is just as engaging and delightful as the first time I saw it. The film ended up being the first in a series of animated films-the Shrek films, others come to mind-making meta-jokes or commentary on their forms to produce much more comedic offerings. Returning to it after 20 years or so just makes it stand out as the trend setter it ended up being.

It was fun watching you have fun! This is one of Disney's best and funniest - I remember when it first premiered, some movie critic called it "the best Looney Tunes that Chuck Jones never made", which is high praise given Jones' comedic genius. Also, sad that your Shawshank reaction got pulled!! That really sucks!

I remember that TV show. I couldn’t find it when i was 20 and looking. For a bit i thought i dreamed it up. No it really existed.
The movie itself good. It holds up more than other movies of its time. I like it.

The movie is set in the Incan Empire in the 1500s, but many liberties were taken for the sake of its great comedy.
The movie was originally going to be a musical called “Empire of the Sun”, with more serious moments (Sting was gonna provide a soundtrack, and Owen Wilson was going to play Pacha), but it went through development hell and was ultimately changed into a comedy. And the movie doesn’t share many elements with the fairy tale it bases its name off of (Emperors New Clothes).

There was a sequel that was released a couple of years after this, "Kronk's New Groove". It's still alright, even though it was originally a direct-to-video release. David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt, and Patrick Warburton are all back as their respective characters. Joining for the sequel are Tracy Ullman and John Mahoney.

🦙 The 2000s were arguably Disney's busiest decade. They were still cranking out a lot of drawn animation movies like this in addition to all the CGI features. After "The Princess And The Frog" (2009) they closed down their drawn animation facilities and it's been nothing but CGI ever since. An underrated Disney cartoon feature from this period was "Home On The Range" (2004). 🐄 It's one of those movies in which all of the actors have such distinctive voices that it's easy to tell who they are without looking at the credits first. 😎👍

As a kid, we saw every animated Disney movie that came out every year. But we stopped at Tarzan from 1999… I was 12 and I guess I just lost interest in animated kids movies at that age. Because I never saw this one either it came out in 2000

    Also, a fun fact:
Near the end of the movie when Kuzco and Patcha get to the lab and Kuzco asks How Yzma and Kronk got there first, Kronk's line ("By all accounts it doesn't make sense") changes depending on the translation. There's a version in a different language where he says something like "Even the animators don't know" (Someone else mentioned that in a comment on another reaction to this movie. I think it was on the channel "Welchy")

When I first saw this, I was a kid in third grade, I'm almost 32 now, so I was just watching this because I wanted to see it and my third grade teacher popped it in for a movie day (that's also how I first saw The Road to El Dorado, equally good film). Now, looking back, I'm more sympathetic to Pacha and the citizens of his village, as well as those who Kuzco mistreated at the beginning of the film, until he was humbled be his journey through the jungle to the palace (minus Yzma, obviously).

I have to say, the one scene that nearly ruined Kuzco for me entirely was the part where Pacha said he should've let him die and his problems would've been over, and Kuzco says that he was stupid for saving him.
Even for how unlikable Kuzco is, that was... BIZARRELY out of character for him. That's not something that a selfish coward would say, it's the words of a complete sociopath! Honestly, it sounds more like something Jack Horner would say.
I dunno if that's what they were trying to suggest or if it was just a badly written line, but it really felt like the character was going too far, even for how bad he already was.

As someone who saw this movie when it came out, yes. Nobody liked Kuzco (but did find him funny) until he got his wake-up call and started to learn how to be a better person.
He didn't deserve Pacha, none of us do, but that doesn't matter to Big Time Dad Energy Pacha. He's going to raise us all to be better people because that's what Dads do.
