Video shows arrest of woman soliciting money for fake funeral in Flagler County

- A woman with two children was arrested along Interstate 95 in Flagler County after soliciting money for a fake funeral over the weekend, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said Elena Firu, 37, was seen with two boys near Palm Coast Parkway and Boulder Rock Drive wearing neon yellow vests and holding signs and buckets.
The sheriff’s office said when deputies questioned Firu, she provided a fake name and later said that name belonged to her niece who died in a crash in France three days prior and that she was raising money for her funeral.
Video shows a deputy question Firu, then tell the suspect and her children she’s sorry their family is going through that tragedy, but she “can’t have (them) walking in traffic.”

As far as traffic goes..telling someone they “might” distract drivers is not a law enforcement issue. It’s the driver’s responsibility to maintain attention. Once again…zero authority to do anything. I helped a family like this once, than I saw them a couple of months later doing the same thing but at a different location. That was a $10 dollar lesson I'll never forget.

A few years ago there was a panhandler that stood at a busy intersection day after day. Something happened and police confronted him, which is rare because panhandling is legal where I live. Turns out he was a local lawyer and had $2k in cash in his pocket.

Remember the days when someone had a sign that said "Will work for food" written in cardboard and sat on the side of the road. As I owned a restaurant, I offered him work and I would also feed him first. He got so mad and wanted to fight. He told me to get away from him and I was ruining his business.

Currently out in California for work, the amount of homeless and panhandlers is absolutely off the charts. Most of it is drugs, you literally see them smoking their foil right on the sidewalk. I never give any of these people money. I distinctly remember walking into some restaurant and two homeless panhandlers approached me and asked for money, I told them I’d get them something on the way out. I bought them each a nice steak, peppers, rice, onions stir fry. I gave it to them, they didn’t say thank you, then asked if I had money. I told them to eff off, was able to grab one of the bags of food and homeboy started getting loud so I told him I’ll feed him his teeth instead if he takes one more step towards me. I was pissed. After that incident, I will never give them anything

I thought that it was something in her mind that’s far too shameful to tell even a female officer. That could be dozens of things, but she must not have gainful employment as she has adequate time to panhandle at two different intersections in their respective cities. It would be far easier to accept the handouts of organizations than it would be to panhandle in the intense heat, not to mention the dangers of traffic!
Ultimately, I think she’s here illegally, which is why she had no ID whatsoever to display when asked. The fact that she somehow got here, but is no longer allowed to be here is likely the problem. Many people will get one class of visa just to get into a country where they will knowingly “overstay.” You also can’t work on a tourist visa for example.
She and her kids could face deportation, and she simply can’t even work to afford a lawyer to help get her a proper “green card” because you need the appropriate visa in lieu of a social security number plus valid ID. I really can’t see her doing “busy work” under the table and for very low wages.
It’s a HUGE catch-22 and she’s scared shitless of having to go back home, that probably applies tenfold for her kids as she wants to keep them here in America.
Again, this is just brainstorming a theory or two based on the available information, but it could be something totally different, perhaps even laughable. On the other hand the reasoning could be secondary to something far more sinister. If I had to go with one guess, it would be using the wrong type of visa to gain entry into the country and then intentionally overstaying her welcome as a “tourist.” I think she figured out how to get to America and even stay, but didn’t think about how she could afford to survive without the valid documentation to work here legally.

They were in various areas changing their stories at each location. They even told police their sole reason was to travel to panhandle

I was tricked into giving a person claiming to collect for a funeral.
I was heartbroken thinking about that person. Then I see that person 2 weeks later with the same sign, it made my blood boil.

Same thing happened my sophomore year in college. Stopped at a gas station along the interstate in Nashville. Had someone say they need cash to get to a funeral in NC. Gave him $20 for gas. A week or two later he came up to me at the same gas salvation with the same story. Needless to say, I didn't have the same reaction.

There was a family who not only got permits but ALSO permission to do a Funds for Funeral Carwash right by a Walgreens. They would wash and dry your car for ANY amount of money for a funeral. They even had drinks while you waited. I've never since one like it since then. You could do ANYTHING for funds, just need the resources to.
Reminds me of college when my grandmother died tragically like 11 times.

Here in Toronto, there is a woman that does this with a sign of pictures of two children. It gives the impression that she is looking for her lost children. When she comes to the car window, she says, "I can't feed them and buy them clothes." Please help me." I've seen her doing this in multiple parts of the city. This scam is their full-time job.

If so that's just ridiculous the government gives low income people 760 per child under 6 years old and lowers the age ranges bit by bit, plus hundreds from welfare probably like 800 if she has 2 children and the Trillium and gst checks she would get monthly... there's also food banks and soup kitchens all over the city.
