    I was 11 when this came out. I stubbornly avoided this movie for over a decade due to being sick of everyone saying "You HAVE TO see this!!!". When I finally relented as an adult, it impressed me in spite of my reservations. All the more proof one should experience art with an open mind and not judge based on positive or negative hype.

    A lot of the scenes in this movie are actually improvised: Jack shouting he's the king of the world, Cal flipping the table (so Kate's reaction was authentic), her spitting Cal at the end (she was meant to slap him). This movie is fantastic. And Jack's quote about a thousand knives is a real one from a survivor.

    What people fail to understand about why Titanic made so much money is that it appealed across all demographics. Young, old, male, female. It was an action film, a disaster movie, and a love story wrapped up all in one.

    • @chrishood2793
      @chrishood2793 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was Romeo and Juliet on a sinking ship. It's funny that Leo actually played Romeo. I think the story resonates with people because it's almost mythological, but it was real. There have been Maritime disasters that were far worse. For instance, in the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, over 9,500 lost their lives.
      Titanic was just the perfect storm. April, 1912 was a freak time for icebergs entering the shipping lanes. Then you had a moonless night and a flat calm sea which is an extremely rare scenario. If it were a few hours earlier, the icebergs would have been spotted in the sun light. There was only 37 seconds to react because the bergs were impossible to see. There were only 20 lifeboats on Titanic, four more than the law required and the boats were filled with a handful of passengers. There was a ship, the Californian, that warned of ice that night. Phillips told them to shut up because they were interrupting his messages. The Californian turned off their radio. The Californian was only 10 miles away, but they never responded. From their vantage point, Titanic didn't appear to be sinking. The list was ever so slight that nobody noticed. Looking over the side of the ship, there was nothing but darkness. Unlike the movie, passengers couldn't see from one side of the ship to the other because the decks were not illuminated. Some lifeboats had a mob of people waiting, others had barely a few. Murdoch on the starboard side said women and children first; Lighttoller on the port side said women and children only. Captain Smith called for the lifeboats to return, but only one came back after it was much too late. The one that returned was piloted by Fifth Officer Lowe. Lowe was not woken by the impact, neither was he woken by the crew. Ismay helped passengers get into lifeboats and Murdoch told him to enter the lifeboat (he didn't sneak on). Ismay was later seen as a coward. It is unknown whether the band played indoors or outdoors, but the consensus is that they played the British Methodist version of Nearer Thy God to Thee (a different melody than the American version played in the movie). The violin played by the bandleader, Wallace Hartley, is in the Titanic Museum in Tennessee. There is a lot of legends and myths that go with the sinking. One of the myths was that steerage passengers were locked in by gates. The truth is, there were no gates blocking the corridors. The doors that led to the upper decks were unmarked and looked like every other door. Many were confused because of the language barrier. There were third-class survivors, but many were too late to get in line. Another myth is that Captain Smith was careless. The truth is that he took the Southern Transatlantic route to avoid the ice. The rule was to slow down in bad weather or fog and only stop to avoid an obstacle. Smith followed the rules.

    • @dawggirl
      @dawggirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrishood2793 You clearly have done your research. I appreciate this fascinating information. Also happy to hear about Captain Smith, I always felt sorry for him.

    • @chrishood2793
      @chrishood2793 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dawggirl Captain Smith wasn't a highly respected captain for nothing. He spent many years with the Royal Navy Reserve and captained many troop ships during the Boer War. He had a long service with the White Star Line, piloting several of their fleet of ships such as the Baltic, Adriatic, and Titanic's near twin sister ship, the Olympic. If you notice the flag at the tail of the ship, most ships had a red flag. Titanic's had a blue flag because Captain Smith was a captain in the Royal Navy Reserve.
      Smith was nicknamed the "Millionaire's Captain". He was very charming, inviting, very popular with the passengers and with the line. He was also a family man, writing many encouraging letters to his wife and daughter Helen.
      When Titanic set sail, there was a near collision the SS New York, another ship that was docked due to the coal strike of 1912. The suction from Titanic's propellers pulled the New York from it's port snapping its cables. Captain Smith outmaneuvered the Titanic and prevented a collision. It delayed the Titanic for an hour, but it could have been a bad accident as the New York was over half the size of Titanic. This wasn't shown in the movie because James Cameron wanted to show the magnificence of the Titanic and didn't want the near collision to take away from the scene. Some of the passengers that witnessed this saw it as a bad omen.
      A rumor is that Smith was purposefully speeding at the request of J. Bruce Ismay. There was a passenger that said she heard a conversation between Smith and Ismay. We do know that the last boiler room was not in use. We know that, because of the ice warning of field ice, that Smith took the Southern Transatlantic route, which added many more miles to the journey. The Titanic was never built for speed.
      Smith followed the rules of Maritime law to a "T". Ice was not considered a threat. Fog was. The rule was to maintain speed until an obstacle was sighted. 1 bell ring from the lookouts meant an obstacle at the port side. 2 bell rings meant an obstacle at the starboard side. 3 bell rings meant an obstacle in front. The obstacle didn't even have to be identified. Given clear conditions, the lookouts would have time to spot. The problem was no moonlight and nof rippling water, an extremely rare situation.
      The 97 movie always showed Smith as being in a catatonic state during. Nobody witnessed this. We do know that he met with Thomas Andrews and surveyed the damage. He gave orders to the officers to ready the lifeboats and allow women and children first. He supervised the lowering of many boats. He met with the wireless operators to give them direction on the distress. He called for the return of the lifeboats, to no avail.
      It's easy to criticize, especially when hindsight is 20/20.
      Hindsight is 20/20

When I saw the Titanic it was a large multiplex, the 1st time I had ever not had an intermission. This traumatised me. It should be standard at all cinemas.

    Her mother wasn't the nicest person but I find it a bit unfair that you said "if you want money you have to work for it and not just marry someone" because this was 1912. Women couldn't really work for their own money, they were still treated heavily as less than. So, yes, it's pretty awful and her mom didn't go about it the best way, but marrying someone rich was really her only option into wealth. It's a great commentary on the oppression of women, even the rich and posh ones.

      Women could certainly work and earn their own money in 1912. Look at the story of Madam CJ Walker…she was a self-made millionaire from this era. Rose’s mother wanted to maintain her luxurious lifestyle without having to work at all because she considered it beneath her, not because she wasn’t allowed to work. So he wasn’t being unfair to Rose’s mother at all. She would rather force her daughter to marry a man she didn’t love than to work as a seamstress, or as anything else. I have no sympathy for that character whatsoever.

    I just love this movie.... I saw it on a Galla Premiere in Denmark together with my sister, People were well dressed, there a buffet and champagne.. Very special. I love the combination of the xhipwreck and the ship in 1912, I went to Belfast in 2013 to were it all begins (were they make the ship). It was huge.... I heard to history and with help from a guide - I got an idea how tall the ship is. Is very tall. I also went to Cobh, ireland to see the last port of Titanic - kind of sad moment. There is a series in 2 parts were U seen the men who build the ship from the beginning.

    You must keep in mind society at the time. Rose and her mother knew no other world, and the poor at that time had no state support. If Jack had lived and rose went on to have a child a year before the outbreak of WWI, they would of lived in complete poverty, and Jack would most likely have been killed in the war.
    All aristocratic families had arranged marriages at that time. In that sense, I can sympathise with the mother.

    His reaction when she is naked was actually what he said as was first scene they did. They liked it so much they kept it in. The drawing of jacks is James Cameron drawing. And James Cameron wife plays the granddaughter. And the people who rose hangs around with was real people. And if you notice at end the clock it’s time ship sinks so she does die and everyone in the room is dead.

    When I was kid, my parents told me that the titanic incident happened in real life, and I was so confused as to why someone would record that and not help. I literally taught that the movie Titanic was actual footage of the real incident and that Jack and Rose were real people. I was so sad because I thought the people in the movie died in real life and that the people who filmed it never helped😂

    I used to work as a media-teacher (Photoshop, 3d, Soundforge, Premiere etc) I was at a gathering when the guys who made the animations in this movie had a lecture. They focused on one single scene. When a woman picks up her child during a flyby of the camera. He told us, and showed us, how much work went inte that single scene... Darn! (See if you can spot it!)

Just aa note: the Cinematography is done by Russell Carpenter who also did the Cinematography for the supernatural ghost film "Lady in White" which was filmed in my hometown.
