it's incredible that game was even close at all. Shanahan completely owned and spanked Carroll's defense and the 49ers still needed a goal line stand to win.
Completely skipped the part where he was with the 49ers as DC and took George Seifert & Ray Rhodes’ scheme for what’s now called the Seattle defense...when it was crafted in SF
Exactly!!! As a Seahawks fan, I still love watching this channel no matter what video. Alex is extremely informative and smart about football tactics and techniques.
It's called Coaches' film and anyone can now get it at NFL.com as part of Game Pass. It's what coaches use to study plays and opponents, and it's MUCH more useful than the TV broadcast video, which almost never shows full formations or coverages.
Shanahan is good at attacking the Seahawks defense, but it is a huge credit to Carrol's coaching that even with Shanahan's plan and superpowered offense they still were only able to put up 24 and 26 points against the Seahawks this year.
I know Shanahans an offensive genius but I think it could also help having Richard Sherman a member of that legion of boom defense completely dissecting the defensive playbook and assignments to him. Seahawks did that to the 9ers with multiple personel before.
Sherman has been a great help to the 49ers both in terms of his play on the field, culture in the locker room, and coaching the younger players on the practice field, but trust me, Kyle knows the Seattle Defense better than Sherman does. That said, Sherm could confirm to Kyle what he knows about the Seattle defense. But at the end of the day, it's all on film and any coach can see what the opponent is doing.
Sometimes I feel like im the only one who has never played defense as a "true zone." We also use pattern distribution and read receivers since I can remember. DBs also read the line to come up on runs, read screens, or stay in coverage. Also adjustments us players did on field based on alignment
Shanahan and Jimmy G are a perfect match. The only other QB I'd love to see paired with him is Russell Wilson who is like the modern day Steve Young to me (Jimmy G is still my first choice).
@@LoanwordEggcorn Wilson is a better pocket passer than your giving him credit. He's smart with the ball, accurate and impossible to sack... Kyle would design different plays to take advantage of that. Regardless, I'm thrilled with Jimmy G, he's elite.
@@jonq8714 Agree Russ is a good passer, but his superpower is rolling out and making scramble drill passes downfield. Fortunately Saleh's defense did a good job of containing him to the edges in the first game and added improved defense at the middle in the second game. The latter included successfully stuffing Beastmode multiple times, and also largely preventing Russ escaping up the middle as often as he did in the first game. Jimmy is an excellent pocket passer and has also been moving in and around the pocket well when needed. He's also still learning to play QB and has significantly improved with more starts and playing time this season. His upside remains very high, and he has not reached his ceiling yet. The combination of an elite passer with Kyle's offense is already very productive and will continue to improve. 49ers are still young and improving and will be good for many years, especially due to building very well through the draft. WCO is very different from what Russ is special at. WCO requires quick, accurate timing passes. Therefore Jimmy is much better suited to Kyle's offense than Russ. If Russ were our QB, Kyle would come up with plays for him, but off schedule scrambles is not what WCO is based on. That said, Jimmy has been doing well with occasional scrambles too. The TD to Kittle against the Rams was one good example. I'm not saying Russ couldn't do WCO passes and be good at it, or that Kyle coud not come up with scrambles or even bootlegs for him, but it's not his unusual strength.
So u think Pete would do a 4-6 bears defense? Or, probably not a good idea because it’s completely too late to change the usual scheme at this point if and when Seattle plays 49ers again?
4-6 is an antiquated defense, today's passing offenses would tear it up, that's why nobody runs it anymore. I think Pete Carroll is a genius and the point of the video was that his scheme has worked for decades, and that Shanahan has a very good understanding of that defense. Doesn't mean Pete needs to drastically change anything
The difference will be this time we'll be rested and have almost our entire defense back, Kittle and Sanders too(I know they played wk17 but at home Kittle wears an S and a red cape). And our kicker won't be an untested rookie. IF they get past Philly they're in big trouble. We were banged up and it STILL took 2 possessions in overtime for Seattle to win by 3.
But the Seahawks were missing 2 starting olinemen and 3 running backs and still quite frankly should have beat the 49ers if it wasn’t for that missed PI in the end zone
@@masonmcconnell9375 Yes, without Dee Ford, we've been missing nearly half of our edge rush. The experience of Kwon and Tartt will help, but Greenlaw and Harris have continued to improve every week. Dre in particular is a playmaker. His upside is very high.
At 1:35 Alex's comment is wrong Carroll rarely matches up with offenses, he runs a base 4-3 personnel. That's why B.Wagner, KJ Wright, & whoever is healthy that week for the 3rd LB always stays on the field. I've listened to Carroll's weekly radio interviews for years & he has always said that he makes the opposing offense make the personnel changes not them. That worked in the past when he had the L.O.B., especially Earl Thomas.
It was a beat down hawks team and everyone was already declaring it was all over and to fuck Kyle Shanahan when the hawks had it 1st and goal at the 1 for the win. Hawks have the niners number and it wasn't scheming that won the game.
I worry that the 49ers are too much of a fineness offense. They struggle to close out games because they can't just power run against a tired defense and run down the clock. I wish they would utilize a quick short possession passing game like the old 49ers.
They're built for the modern NFL. outside zone schemes on offense and a wide alignment on the defensive line, prioritizing rushing the passer, and they're current roster reflects that.
Finesse? Have you seen how many tackles Deebo, Kittle and Mostert break? If we are talking about being able to have a designed one yard run then you should know that doesn't dictate a team being a power team. No matter who you are running the ball a yard when you need a yard is not easy. And if you also have seen the 49ers we can run a QB sneak rather well or utilize Jeff Wilson Jr whenever he plays.
@@gibster9624 It seems their offense is predicated on misdirection. That's fine most of time them but when you're trying to close out a game it's good to be able to power run and eat up clock. If they could pick up 3rd and short they wouldn't have lost any games this year. And there was no excuse for letting the Falcons back in the game or almost losing to the Seahawks after being up 12 with 5 minutes left.
Lacking Dee Ford has hurt the entire defense a lot due to less edge rush. Lacking D.J. Jones has lessened push up the middle especially on run plays but in also disrupting the QB on pass plays. Lacking Tartt has opened up coverage gaps in the middle, though Harris has improved significantly with playing time each week. Spoon seems injured, and Mosley out played him in Seattle. Lacking Ronnie Blair has hurt edge contain and edge rush. Lacking Kwon Alexander has hurt the middle, though Greenlaw has been doing great for a rookie. Etc. A better question is how the less talented backups and less experienced rookies have been doing so well due to great coaching. It's amazing how well the defense has done with so many starters missing. Glass half full, and credit where due. The rookies and backups stepped up and made plays, due to hard work, talent and great coaching.

It's cause Russel Wilson is a slippery bastard who pulls magic out his ass.
Shanahan is a GENIUS
i can imagine coaches watching his videos taking notes
Andre Febry I bet five coaches on both teams already know everything in this video. It’s interesting, but not particularly useful to an NFL Coach.
Lol I wish Pete would watch this shit. Or anything people make breaking down why continuously playing a base defense is stupid in 2020

😕. Your giving them credit for averaging 25 points given up? That's not very good at all wdym?
Considering the 49ers averaged 30.6 points against other teams and only 25 against Seattle, yeah that is pretty good.
I know Shanahans an offensive genius but I think it could also help having Richard Sherman a member of that legion of boom defense completely dissecting the defensive playbook and assignments to him. Seahawks did that to the 9ers with multiple personel before.
