    They are the greatest pass defense of all time. In an era where Passing was at its highest, they were in a class of their own statistically. Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Bobby Wagner, and Kam Chancellor all deserve to be hall of famers.

    Getting Bennett & Avril in 2013 in the 2nd wave of FA signing was insane. Avril master of knocking the ball out = sack. Clemons under appreciated pass rusher. Bennett was a FA steal.

  • @misterseahawks9617
    @misterseahawks9617 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

    The culmination of multiple great coaches is such a great way to put it. Quinn at DC with Richard coaching the secondary, and Norton coaching the linebackers, plus alot of really good assistant coaches, guys like Rocky Seto created a monster under Pete. Everytime one of those guys left, it just got worse until it was all eventually over.

  • @ggsimmonds1
    @ggsimmonds1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +73

    Kam was great, but Earl Thomas is what made this defense work. He was the hinge everything else relied on. The outside corners could play aggressive because they knew Earl could help with any inside route. If Earl isn't there to protect the post, Sherman isn't going to be nearly as aggressive. And Cam was able to play as a hybrid coverage linebacker because Earl could play deep centerfield like few guys could (Ed Reed and Bob Sanders come to mind from recent memory).

    • @phillipisayev1273
      @phillipisayev1273 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      But Earl could also afford to be flying recklessly all around the field because he knew he had Kam Sherman KJ Wagner and a fantastic Dline with Avril and Bennet forcing errant passes and having each others back. The whole point of that defense is that every single player was one of “the hinges” on the team. It’s why their pre game mantra was always that “who’s got my back (I got your back)”.

    • @ggsimmonds1
      @ggsimmonds1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phillipisayev1273 It wasn't recklessly. There wasn't a situation where he had deep middle responsibility and he said you know what imma go defend the flats. Earl was the hinge because thats the nature of his position in a single high defense. Its like an offensive line, even if LG is your clear cut best player on the line, the center is still the hinge.

    • @ThinkingFootball
      @ThinkingFootball  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      As someone who watched every game, no, Kam was more important
      Earl couldn't do what he did if he didn't have such a great run stopping unit in front of him, and having Sherman lock one side meant he could cheat the other outside receiver more and deny the pass
      This team worked because it was a great unit, but Kam was the Engine

    • @ggsimmonds1
      @ggsimmonds1 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@ThinkingFootball Disagree. Scheme wise the deep safety in a single high shell is virtually always the most important guy. If he fails his responsibility the defense is cooked. And it didn't matter who the corners were, the single high safety always has post responsibility. ALWAYS. You play single high and don't defend the post and try telling the coach "well I thought Sherman could lock him down" your coach is going to chew you out. This is revisionist history. Kam being the heart and soul or locker room leader of the defense would get no argument from me whatsoever, but strictly Xs and Os? Absolutely not. There's a reason Earl has 3 first team APs to Kam's 0

    Honestly, it might seem strange, but a huge part of the D’s success was its ability to stay fresh because of the Seahawks Offense’s run-heavy focus which gobbled up clock, wearing down the opposing D and keeping the Hawks D much more fresh. It’s incredible how it all worked together.

    Most people overlook one major thing this defense did that I loved. The first chance they got, they would take a defenseless receiver flag. From that point on in the game, everything was sold up. WRs would lay down the rest of the game which made teams run the ball more and they would pack the house in. I loved it. Psych out. Earl and Cam lay one hit and no one wants the ball. It was beautiful to witness.

Yeah the seahawks offense was amazing, but I remember this game more for their defense. They stomped on that broncos offense immensely, and it just seemed like they would get an interception every other play. It’s interesting cause after this super bowl, broncos switched to focusing a lot more on their defense which helped them win in 2016! Crazy to think that this super bowl was 10 years ago.

    They ran that cover 3 - match coverage with Bobby Wagner covering tight ends and inside receivers , with the safety down in the box (kam) so you couldn’t even run the ball

    This is what has bothered me so much about the Packers defense for over a decade. No physicality at all, they build the team around finesse & pass defense, and they still get torched eventually. Its the most frustrating thing ever. Year in year out, their run defense gets absolutely cooked and leads to them getting out time of possessioned and physical every single game. Its a losing recipe 9/10 times unless your offense is prolific enough to handle constant scoring. Its weird too because you'd figure they'd fix it by now, especially being an outdoors team up north. All those teams typically have good defenses...
    Bills, Patriots, Steelers, Ravens, Seahawks, etc. Only the Browns & Bengals have had somewhat questionable and non physical defenses in recent memory, and even then, the Browns have had a really good defense lately.

    Legion of boom plus Russell Wilson was so OP against my niners. Obviously the defense was an all time team but something about Wilson against the niners is just different. Whether it’s him on a perennial seahawk team, a sorry ass seahawk team, or him on the broncos. Any time i see Russell’s team on the schedule I know it will be a battle that majority of the time he wins. It was a sad time being a niners fan then. Especially being from Reno, NV. No body useful has ever came from Nevada especially at that time, Kap was my hometown hero going to my favorite team and they did so much good but that was at the seahawks peak of defense and offense which was so sad to see, as a football enthusiast i was mesmerized and lucky to witness such greatness but still a tough pill to swallow. The legion of boom will never be matched in greatness and effect on the game. Even though i was a niners fan i still watched Bam Bam Kam highlights before my football games to hype me up. Pure greatness

    A great defensive unit where no one player carries the defense but it was bunch of good to great players who very instinctual who excelled in the scheme. Take out 2 of the starters and this isn’t considered legendary no matter if they are lower end starters or the top 2 everyone built off the other and succeeded because of it.

    2013 was a special unit, but #1 Defense from 2012 to 2015 in a time when rules were skewed to favor Offense is why I'll always argue they're the greatest Defense of all time. They kept the most productive Offense of all time scoreless for 45 minutes.

    You only have to ask Vernon Davis how good and scary Kam was. There have been very few if any other safeties that were feared like Kam was, and there are always key guys, but he was the heart and soul of that defense that kept all the personalities working together. When he had to retire, none of it worked quite the same ever again.

    Do you think you could add more historical context to these vids? I'd really like to know why the legion of boom stopped being as big of a deal. Did players get traded, age out, or did the league figure out some counter play? I know you touched on it a little at the end but more sounds interesting to me. Love the vids :)

      Scheme wise the Seahawks didn't do anything overly special. It was a pretty standard Under front with single high safety. What made the LOB special was personnel. Two big physical corners, Kam, and Earl is a rare mix. That allowed Pete to consistently employ press coverage in his cover 3 which is just unfair. The only defense that exceeds the Seahawks in terms of talent imo were the 2000 Baltimore Ravens.
      I'm not meaning to start an argument over which defense was better, thats not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is find a youtube video that breaks down the 2000 Ravens scheme on defense. You can't because it doesn't really exist. The Ravens scheme was "we're going to line up in front of you and beat the hell out of you." Then on the other side of the spectrum I'd put a team like the Tampa-2 Buccaneers or Zone Blitz Steelers who were more scheme reliant. On that scheme vs personnel spectrum, the LOB unquestionably fell more on the personnel side. And you just can't keep that together for long.

      When you sorta break down the 'best' defenses of the last two decades, there is nothing special about them outside of having amazing talents that fit a consistent scheme/system. Simplicity has always been key for NFL defenses because they are already playing behind (against better) offenses who are gaining the upper hand on them. Urlacher on record has explained for the 2006 Bears they go into games with 5 defensive calls: Cover 2, Cover 3, Man blitz, zone blitz and 3rd down stuff. As was stated by TF Cover 1 keeps the run game honest on early downs if the run game can't break big gains. Obviously the Seahawks had the front 7 personnel to close up those gaps and get at the runner if things broke down. Then on passing downs they had two great corners who can be physical against receiver matchups to jam them at the line of scrimmage. Cover 1/3 is still played today (obvious ex Caroll guys in DC Gus Bradley and HC Dan Quinn) and those respective coaches/coordinators may not have the best athletes to be consistent with the defense. But they still get intended results.

    I almost agree with this, but I think you're underselling Earl. Earl Thomas made everything work - you can't play Kam close to the box without Earl's ridiculous range.
