It is called conditioning. Pick-up and pat each one for a few seconds and then give the treat after everyone got loved on. It works as positive reinforcing and so far I have found they demand love to get the treats.
@@The_Duck_Man I find they are less sensitive on the front chest so starting there helps, works with goslings too. Center of the back is the worst spot to start, I think it has to do with their way of breeding.
Predators most usually come from above, so coming from above them and picking them up is preprogrammed to mean they were just picked for lunch. Try to always approach from the side or front. Petting on the back they don't like because of the same reason. Petting their chest is best.

Thank you!! Good luck with your ducks. I have a runner duck and they do look hilarious. But black swedes have a soft spot in my heart for how fluffy and cute they are.
Thank you for this video. I’m expecting two Cayuga eggs to hatch in three weeks and I want to start taming them from a young age so that they let me pick them up and pet them whenever I feel like it.
I have brought 6 adult egg laying female khakhi campbell, but they never let me touch them they start flying all around the coop even when im trying to feed them. I don't know how I can tame them. They are really Wild!
@libinstanly1947 I'm sorry to hear! Getting them at adulthood is going to be the hardest to deal with. You have to make consistent effort to spend time with them. It will probably take months to get them comfortable with you.
I just got ducklings a day ago and they’re like maybe 4-7 days old and ones name is Annie and one is Gwen and I love them both thanks for the info ) and I think it’s so sad to ship these little animals to other places and a lot of them don’t survive, it’s so sad

Cuddling ducklings is the best thinig in the world and you're missing out if you don't do it. My ducklings - especially fawn and white runners - will fight to climb into my husband's hand when they are tiny just to sleep there. They're missing a mom and if you want your ducks to love you, and be easy to handle, spend as much time holding them as possible the first 8 weeks!
My pet duck calls for me as soon as i leave the room....plays in my beard sometimes 😂...only been a week but she is a sweetheart....they seem to be very social and loving
Best of luck! It takes effort and a lot of calm time with the ducks before they'll totally trust you! To them, we are scary massive creatures and they have no natural defense mechanisms.
Glad you like them :). Yes, they each have a name, although I don't think they know their names. The one with yellow-tipped wings and yellow feet is Poppy. She's the runt. The other two look more similar. Flipper is the largest of the 3 and has a large patch of white going down to her belly from under her chin. Finally, Chicken is the blackest of the 3, and has the smallest patch of white on her chest. Also, Chicken is the only one that likes being pet and scratched.
Even though my ducks like me a lot, they still tend to move out of the way if I approach closely. It's natural to some degree for them to be a bit cautious around a 5ft+ tall being. On the other hand, if they're running away from a pretty good distance, you can probably work on desensitizing yourself with them. Spend time standing near them but not chasing them etc. Sit in a chair near them. Spend time just near them, not doing anything in particular. They will begin to associate your presence with calmness
Yeah, it's just going to be harder than if they are a day old. It will work though. They will be more standoffish and will take a bit more time to break that
My neighborhood rooster killed dozen of baby duck eggs he open them all only 2 survived we took them in they grew so fast I think spend lot of time specially those first days I kept them warm on my chest so they love to be carried cup them up they follow me everywhere I spend so much time with them we claimed a corner of the lake noone gets near not even the rooster.
