I am quite surprised that this game flew that low under the radar in the US ; it just got the "As d'Or" prize in the intermediate category (Initiés) ahead of Oltréé etc. It is to me one of the best "family+" games of 2021 hands down.
But imho this is not per se a push your luck game, a la Quacks of Quedlinburg for instance. There is a minor push your luck component but in effect, just like in Mystic Vale, you don't want to push your luck, you need your 2 actions.
It is basically a deckbuilding game mixed with action selection and tableau building.
The artwork is great with lots of unique cards and illustrations, components are great for the price - except maybe the cardboard pawns on the circular board, where the racing element and resulting bonus action is actually key especially in 3 or 4 player games.
My only slight complaint is that at 2 players, it usually boils down to who gets the 12 flames first. It's way more interesting at 3 or 4.
I have the feeling this review doesnt do it justice - and who needs a player aid when the 4 actions are so straight foward? why bring that up? It simply shows the game has barely been tried and played. 8-10 year olds understand and remember those easily and never look at a "player aid" card anyway.

This game is deceptively deep. I have 20-30 plays on BGA and I keep finding advanced strategic considerations with each play. You should never push your luck. You should always be counting your cards so you know exactly how many solitary animals you have left to draw. It’s a really, really solid design for a lighter weight game. One of the better designs I’ve played in a while.

That’s so true! You can know when to push and when to hold which opens the whole game up.

I've got around 10 games on BGA and have a few issues, curious what you think: 1) I've never seen a lotus flower victory, in fact haven't even seen it get close. There's just no time when compared to speed of collecting fire or trees. 2) The "flame attack" cards really only seem to matter maybe first 1 or 2 turns; after that, there's plenty of water resources amongst the players to extinguish, and in fact I've typically seen fire get put out by the first-to-act player(s) as it's the fastest way to victory if you can get 3+ tokens in a turn. 3) There's a bit of "accidental king-making" that can happen by buying a bunch of animals on a turn, and then having a bunch of fire come out on the next turn, ready for that starting player to put it out. Now doing it right you can combo it for yourself, but I've seen new players "assisting" the next starting player, who already has a bunch of fire, pretty often for it to feel a bit "broken". I don't know, I want to like it more, for all the positive reasons mentioned in the video, it just feels there's a decent amount of things that didn't quite get hammered out while play testing.

@@kaveman9090 I lost to a Lotus victory just the other night. It’s hard if you aren’t watching every move someone makes for sure, and the shuffle has to be right but it does happen. I like the engine build for sure though.

at two players, some players that feels like the Fire Strategy going too powerfull choose to add a victory condition wich is simple : Having 2 instead of 1 elements of victory (so if you got fire 1st, great, but now you need an other one)
It makes the game a bit longer but looks like working to mitigate that fire effect at 2 players

The core gameplay of deckbuilding, revealing cards and busting with 3 bad symbols makes this seem a lot like a lighter mystic vale.

While the card drawing is basically identical to mystic vale I'd actually say living forest is a slightly more complex game. It feels like there's more interactivity and a couple of extra significant mechanics to be aware of while playing.
That said while I've played a bunch of mystic vale I'm just scratching the surface of living forest so that view may change over time.

Much closer to mystic vale. Still different enough to stand on its own right imo.
