    Thanks for this video man , since quarantine I’ve gotten really into fishing (mostly fresh water at cachuma and some ponds) but I like fishing salt water and going to goleta pier as well, I’ve really been wanting to catch some halibut, might have to go check it out this weekend!

      Of course, glad I can help guide you in the right direction. The halibut bite isn't what it was 4 months ago. They are still out there though, I got a keeper this last weekend from my kayak. Good luck out there.

    I swapped out all the treble hooks out to single 1/0 inline VMC hooks on all my LC SP minnows. I get a lot less kelp on them when the surf is loaded with it and it doesn't tear up the fish either.

      Great idea, I need to try that. Keeping your lure clean with a lot of kelp isn't the easiest to do.

    • @talljeffkayakfishing4527
      @talljeffkayakfishing4527  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With this setup, the lure is the weight. Their are other ways to fish for halibut using a weight.

    Awesome video. I’m a bit new to the lucky craft minnow and am having a bit of trouble launching it out there as far as I can with other gear. I’m using a pen battle battle 2 5k, 8ft ugly stick, 30lb braid + 20lb floro, and a lucky craft 110. I saw that you mentioned “110s” in the vid. Is the “s” just for sardine or is it perhaps a heavier version? I think the one I have is only 5/8oz and it’s strangely hard to get out, even without wind. I was wondering about your thoughts on this. Thanks!

    • @talljeffkayakfishing4527
      @talljeffkayakfishing4527  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your reel is a little big, but can totally be used for this. I use a penn battle 2, 3k size reel with 20lb braid backing and 12lb mono leader. The question I have for you is what is your lure weight for your rod? My guess is it is 1-3oz, if that is the case you are throwing a lure that is 5/8 oz, which is too light for your rod. The rod I use has a luire weight of 1/4-1/2oz, which means the lure is slighty heavy which gives me that leverage to throw it real far. I am using gear that takes some finesse and reel drag to get a large halibut on shore, but is completely doable.

    • @C0w0wow
      @C0w0wow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff W you were right. I also have a battle 3 2.5k for freshwater and picked up a lighter rod, and have had a much better time. While I haven’t had any luck with the LC minnow, keitechs have been slaying them recently.

    Thanks for the tips Jeff, I just started last year and love this new adventure. I've been mostly hitting the Jelly bowl / Tar pits in Carp (where I camp) and have had fun with catching SP's and Yellow Fin Croaker. My quest is to land my first Hallie hopefully a legal. I don't know if you have any knowledge regarding this area. I've' done my homework and been there at low tide to check out the structure and man it's loaded with rocks and other stuff such as pipe line, sea cabbage, and pot holes. I was out there last weekend and no a bite. How important is water temp and the direction of where I cast my LC. It seems that I get it out there pretty good straight out from the shore line, should I be casting at an angle from the shore? It seems when I start reeling in the line the line ends up to the left of me and I really don't feel the wobble of the LC until it's 10 to 15 feet from me. My line is 15lb. braided with a 10 ft. of 15lb. floro lead. I live in Santa Clarita and would love to fish with someone/or a club that knows their stuff. I'm retired and have the time to put the time in to learn.

      The main thing you want is a sandy bottom. I mainly fish Goleta beach from shore for Halibut, so I am not well versed in some of the other areas. Google earth is a good tool to check for sandy bottoms in your area. The week you will catch the most halibut all year is the week after the grunion run, I caught 4 keepers that week last year.
      I cast my LC straight out and try to get it to the bottom as quickly as possible. The rod you use affects how much you feel. Braid gives the best feeling of the lure due to no stretch. The only club I am in is so cal kayak fishing junkies. I fish from a kayak 90% of the time, except after the grunion run and I just fish hard for two weeks after work from shore.

      @@Jaortega805 Ya they come at night. The idea though is that they bring the halibut close to shore, in less than 15 feet of water. So you can walk and throw and catch them, plus usually, the keeper halibut follow the grunion close to shore. I am a big fan of Goleta Beach due to it being a 4-minute drive from my house. Any beach that has a vast sandy bottom and waves you can throw past is an amazing spot for Halibut.

    Is seaweed still an issue at that beach?

    • @talljeffkayakfishing4527
      @talljeffkayakfishing4527  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seaweed is an issue at every beach you fish at. Watch the weather, after a storm there is more seaweed in the water. Also incoming tides tend to bring in the seaweed, while outgoing tides tend to take the seaweed away from shore. Goleta beach can have no seaweed days and tons of seaweed days, it all depends on a multitude of factors.
