Just a matter of time. For me, my secret is putting my face guard over my eyes and casting over and over. But sometimes luck favors the prepared, which is why you’re gonna get one.
That's the attitude, I like that " need to catch little fish to catch the big fish" 4 bally's in one hole in 1hour that a good fishing day if you ask me.
Yea man no complaints at all. At the end of the day, gotta remember that it’s a gift to be healthy and be on the sand with friends. Catching is a bonus.
Old guy wanting to get back into it, talked a little with you before. Learning the language! Structure and salad, salad wasn't too hard but structure had me looking for piers and jetty's. Not solo rocks, got it now lol. Anything else I'm missing? Also, when did braided line come into play? What is the advantage to braided over mono? Love watching you guys catch.
Hi Scott, I believe you are referring to the Halibut Surf Derby tape.....those are not available anymore, but if you check out ot-bp.com (Off the Beaten Path), he sells a similar tape.
So, the steady retrieve advice, using lucky craft, is the best advice I could have gotten, it's actually kinda the opposite of how I feel like I wanna fish em, as well as opposite to what I do when I'm casting them for calico or yellowtail. It has been all of the difference.
Great reflection, thank you for that. I haven't targeted the checkerboards all that much but I've been told that a fast burn is oftentimes the way to go. So interesting and fun to always learn new things with different species. Its what makes this sport so amazing!
Great content! I just moved to SD a few months ago and started surf fishing. I'm still waiting for my 1st catch. Would appreciate any additional tips or to get out with you and Mo at some point.
Great video man. So I notice that you do not necessarily have to set the hook or swing using a LC110. Do you life up the rod or do anything in particular when you know you got a bite or fish on? Thanks!
Thank you 🙏. And correct, no need to swing. Most of the time, I just lift the rod to where it’s loaded up. The trebles and the fish do the rest. So it’s kind of a half hook set? Hope that helps 🤙
hey benjie, ive always wondered how you guys attach the 2nd rod to your backpacks without them juggling in the wind. i noticed some fishing specifc bags have attachments, but im wondering if i can just alter a bag i already have. any suggestions? thanks!
You definitely can, I know some folks will buy a cheap baseball backpack and modify the bat holders. Others will use PVC and zip ties to make it suitable for an extra rod. Unfortunately I've never done it myself so I can't give you a detailed step by step, but I would think that it would be a fairly simple mod.
Nice Benjie! I still havent caught a legal but I'm pretty sure I lost a legal 2 days ago from float tube...magic carpet rode him from mid channel all the way to shore, didn't even fight until I got him to shore...no net, he broke off...
Thank you, for throwing the LC110, my current favorite for spinning is the Phenix Trifecta Lite 903. Great for casting and sensitivity, with plenty of backbone for fighting better grade fish. For casting, my current favorite is the Phenix M1 7'8" MH.
@@loklokoppa9255 I like my stradic ci4+ 3k but I’ve got a Fuego lt 2.5k that’ll pair up pretty much the same. The Fuegos got almost the exact same specs as the stradic at half the price. Has a slightly cheaper feel to it but performance wise, it’s virtually identical.
Wow 11 ft mh should be more than enough. I’ve been throwing my lc’s primarily on an 8’6” medium fast and 7’8” mh and it’s been just fine. I typically recommend any rod in the 8’ to 9’ ft mh range. How far are you wanting to cast? I’d say average distance for the 110 is around 30-40 yards. Obviously we all want more distance on our casts but most of my hits have come within 20 yards or less.
@@BenjieKimFishing as far as possible haha. The waves here are pretty strong and I see a lot of locals cast past them. Thanks for the tips! Maybe it's just my technique I gotta practice
Thanks for telling me dude I jest got a new setup for throwing lucky crafts it’s a 10 foot and is 6-14 pound line will that work if I putt 20 pound j braid on it
@@TiagoFranco07 that should work just fine, what weight is it rated for and what’s the action? Based on the 6-14 tho, my guess is that it should chuck lc’s just fine....especially as it’s a 10 ft.
Love the videos bro! Hope to see you out there, I fish all over Oceanside. I only fish live or cut bait but these videos have encouraged me to try that LC! Do you use a swivel and leader line or just straight tie to your lure?
Thanks Daniel! To be honest, imo NOTHING beats live bait. But I enjoy trying to get the bite on the jerk bait. You should def try it some time, it’s such a thrill to feel that thump! I use a 50 lb tactical anglers clip on either straight braid or with a fluorocarbon leader. I’ll use the RP knot aka crazy Alberto for connecting braid to leader.
Hi Ray, no I do not use weight with the LC. The lure itself is designed to be thrown as is and seems to work best that way, at least for me. I don't have the experience with any other method ie attaching weight, to speak to its effectiveness.
I agree with you....my wording might be different, but I think the pursuit of every avid angler is to narrow the bite window and make every day a slay day. I like the saying "luck favors the prepared"
Hey there, this was a g-loomis e6x 8’6” medium fast. To be honest, not the best halibut rod. Casts really well but a bit noodly when fighting better grade fish.
Thank you for keeping your fishery a secret by not showing the beach background. I’ve seen recent videos of people blatantly showing the whole spot before they walk down and fish. It’s a major bummer to see the areas you grew up fishing with nobody around have video converage for the world to see now in 2020.
Thank you Benjie for all the great tips.
I don’t think I have anything helpful for you anymore bro 😬. From now on, you’re teaching me!

Benjie another great video!! Always come away with something when I watch your videos. Thank you !
Grateful for ya Ruben, thank you for always being so kind and encouraging.
Been on a rough skunk lately, looking for halibut. Thanks for the tips Benjie!
Stick with it Carl, you’ll get em. Hali fishing is a grind. Put in the time, and you’ll be rewarded 👍
Another solid video! Nice to see you put Mo on some fish. He’s definitely been slaying lately too! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Correct, braid backing and a fluoro leader!
Where do you get your measuring tapes for the fish?
Hi Scott, I believe you are referring to the Halibut Surf Derby tape.....those are not available anymore, but if you check out ot-bp.com (Off the Beaten Path), he sells a similar tape.
Great vid Benjie. Do you have to cast out really far to surf fish halis? I have a mojo inshore 7'6" MHF will that be enough?
You don’t have to cast out far brotha, lotsa times they are 10-20 yards in front of ya. That rod should be just fine!
