Mottino Wash

  • Mottino Wash near Big Bear California is a very short but extremely difficult trail. The wash is very narrow and is strewn with boulders and giant rocks. There are virtually no 'go arounds' or bypasses on the trail but there are a few 'extra credit' spots. On this run we had 17 Jeeps and trucks. It usually takes 1-3 hours to complete Mottino Wash but because of the size of this group it took us all day to complete the 1.7 mile trail. We had 3 break-downs on the trail: One rear driveshaft U-Joint that we repaired on the trail, one front hub/axle, and a starter that died midway through the trail.

    as much as i love wheeling, i've never quite found the fun in trails that take all day to cover 1.7 miles. very impressive nonetheless, my tj wouldn't stand a chance here. i'll stick to scenic intermediate trails lol. mad respect to you guys though, thanks BJ for all the consistent quality content!

      They look like up to 37"s so not that big I have 35"s on my daily driver and 40"s on my crawler, I've easily been able to see when a tire bounces off of rocks vs crawls over it.

      Jared Thompson goodyear wrangler MT/R's. I love them and will never go back to BFG's. they are quiet, wear evenly and do great off road. ....and look awsome too.

      Jared Thompson I second what Justin said. I've got BFGs on my xj and MTR/Kevlars on my Jk. The Kevlars are not as loud and have amazing sidewall traction. My second tire choice would be the KO2s.

    Is that a rock hard bolt in cage in the green and tan Cherokee? I was wondering how stout it is and if the occupants feel fairly comfortable with it?

    • @xstaytruexpositivex
      @xstaytruexpositivex 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It appears to be a custom cage.

    • @kevinevenson8207
      @kevinevenson8207 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      tannerrrr54 , it looks like a rock hard kit because of the bolt on ancor points. If you look by the a pillar it looks like a collar worth 3or 4 bolts.

    • @L3th4LShad0w
      @L3th4LShad0w 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Holguin prbly would want lower than stock gears and lockers just to be safe. im sure there are guys that could do it unlocked but Im not experienced enough to lol

    • @michaelholguin690
      @michaelholguin690 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Punkt well I'm definitely going lockers, but that'll be in a while, I'm just wondering about lift height and tire size

    • @papamoose100
      @papamoose100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Holguin I have 4.5 long arms and 33s on my xj and I do pretty great on trails around me. you just have to get out and find out ur limits and decide if u want to keep building or stay where u are. I do plan or lockers and going to 35s and up to 6" of lift. the end goal is 3link front and 4link rear but that's not for a while

    • @L3th4LShad0w
      @L3th4LShad0w 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah i see, well as far as lift and tire size I have not done this trail yet but the guys I wheel with that have are running 35s and at least 4.5 inches

    got a question. I have an xj 89 it's got the usual Dana 40s what is the best gear ratio

    • @L3th4LShad0w
      @L3th4LShad0w 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      svborek 1975 depends on tire size, i have a d30 and 8.25 with 35s and run 488. from what i read the guys that go 456 with 35s wish they went lower, i have 0 complaints with the 488 and 35s

    • @svborek
      @svborek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm running 17s with 265 by 65.

    • @svborek
      @svborek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Punkt no I was wrong. Front and back are both 35d running 17s 265/65 bf a/t 10ply.

    • @L3th4LShad0w
      @L3th4LShad0w 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      okay so thats about a 30inch tire, I ran stock gears with 32s and was alright, on some lower level stuff at the time, if youre planning on staying at that tire size for a while you can find tire charts online thatll give you a recommended ratio, but honestly if you see yourself going up in tire size i would wait to regear until then because it is a big task, i did my own gears (shop wanted $1k to do it) and lockers and it took about 15 hours of work for everything. but thats not counting the hours I spent reading and learning

    • @svborek
      @svborek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Punkt ok great thanks for the tips. It has a 2in lift when I bought it but I want to do a 3in. Figure that would give me the better clearance I would need. Thanks again. Stay jeepin
