SAw her in person once, Oscar Peterson had to cancel, she basically did two shows to make up for him....it was the BEST concert I've ever gone to in my life. She basically let us come right up to the stage and she took requests.....It was truly amazing what she did to make sure we had a great show.

From 2.20 in, this is a remarkable rendition of a song I have known my entire life, beginning as a lullaby sang by my mam in the 60s. An avowed Nina Simone fan, it is Sarah Vaughn's unsurpassed interpretation of this song which she owns. Unequalled excellence.
A strange combination of both embarassing with the early problems but then magically wonderful the way she overcame them to give a great performance. Not my favourite version I've heard but DAMN she sure gave it some feeling! Lady, I know you were (ARE) a legend and I am looking forward to hearing more of you!

Gorgeous! Sassy was always beautiful. I played the Cascais festival three years later. It was a terrible acoustic situation, sort of a sports complex. High ceiling. All the sonoric sophistication of a swimming pool. Or public baths. I had to play in front of Sonny Rollins, with whom I also shared a "dressing room". Also like a sports locker. So I was nervous, to say the least. More like shitting in my pants! Fortunately my gig turned out OK, with the Araripa Quartet. My picture even appeared on the front page of the Diário de Notícias. But the best of the high ceiling was that Sonny Payne could lance his drumsticks 10 metres into the air! I seem to remember him playing with two sticks flying high, while continuing to play with two in the hand, and never missing a beat! I was lucky enough to meet Sassy, Sarah, because she was the godmother of Deena Poindexter, daughter of the great alto and soprano player Pony Poindexter, who lived in the same town as me south of Barcelona, Casteldefells, and took me on my first tour. Pony, originally from New Orleans, was also the person who gave me my one and only lesson in my life. Two tunes of Charlie Parker, whom he´d met in NY. 500 pesetas, (3 euros). Which I was finally too poor to pay! But he never complained! ¡Viva Sarah Vaughn! I also flew out of Lisbon with another great lady, Betty Carter. She had a rep of being "difficult". But I´ve never met a sweeter woman as she. And what a great musician!
