All due respect to Lana del Rey, but when her video comes up first, when searching for "summer time song", and this one comes second, you just know something is not right with the world. 😒
my grandmother was in her 90's and had dementia and this was the song she liked to sing the most, she was always busting it out randomly with a big smile on her face. I would sing along with her. Glad so many others have a similar relationship to this song. I had no idea until today.
My dad used to sing me this every night before bed. I am just sitting here crying at 3 am because I found this. He used to tell me that i would be his caterpillar and bloom into a big butterfly. I would spread my wings. He called me caterpillar and he never ended up calling me his butterfly.
Because your grama don't have the dementia, you go to a doctor and hear him telling you that! then most peeps are going to believe what the doc said and going to be living like that just somehow to escape the harsh reality of the known world .. I just don't go that often to doctors, if I'm feeling ill or cold , my immune and body system will probably automatically recoup... And it's not that I'm stating that the doctor is no good Because if I cut my hand or something real deep I'll be visiting the ER room for stitches...
I agree with you. I'm Mexican and I was born many, many years after Geroge Gershwin wrote this masterpiece. I love this wonderful song, Ella version and Janis version. I'm trying to learn the lyrics because I want to sing it!
Two of the greatest performing artists of all time. Both of these people had a major effect on our music. Louis Armstrong gave us what is considered "American" music. He changed music forever with his style. Like Jimmy Hendrix after him his style was so different and innovative that everyone after had to imitate him or be left in the dust. That was also true with Ella. Salute Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, LEGENDS!
This song screams history in my interpretation... the black reality of bygone years. Yet the the evident solace in the music is what delights... Men and women who found an outlet for their pain and uncertainties, masked by beautiful lyrics and enchanted rhythms. Thank you for this legacy Nina, Ella and Louis... others.
It's touching how many people share about their parents singing to them when they were small. I also have memories of both of my parents singing special songs to me. And I was blessed to be able to sing the same ones to my son. I believe songs touch an ancient part of our soul and I think it's why we have such strong reactions. God bless all those parents and grandparents who sang to those little ones. We never realize how impactful a small, loving act can be. Blessings to all!🙏🌝🌠

Maybe about 4 years ago now. My great grandpa died, I can remember this being played at his funeral. He may have left but the song came into my life that day
To all the kids these days stating their ages on here, all boastful about how they listen to REAL music and are "not from this era"...well you're in THIS era, listening to some great music...dont try to 'live' in a time period other than the present and be thankful for your spot in life :D Life's great.
How an a song be better? That marvelous trumpet intro (nobody has a sound like Louis Armstrong) and Ella Fitzgerald comes in with her vocals (sublime) Then Louis comes in with his (magical). This hits me in the very best possible way, and am at a loss for words beyond that.
Actually, the song isn't about dying. It is a salve, older female salve, singing to a younger white child. She is saying that the child doesn't have to worry because his father is rich and he will get you anything you want, and your mother is good looking, so she can get whatever she wants. It's to tell the child the world will bend over backwards for him because of his family.
This song means different things to everyone...whether it's dying or slaves singing to their white masters children...it's anything you want it to be. That's the beauty of music.
A great song and a great duo. Can't imagine going through a summer without hearing it at least once. It reminds us to slow down a little and enjoy life. Happy Summer everyone.
Takes me back to an era that was even before I was born. Imagining myself sipping on a cold cocktail at a classy lounge/bar and listening to these two geniuses live at work.
No, this was talked about by several people who knew him. Trumpet players used to get paid slightly more to cover wear and tear on the trumpet keys, whereas trombone players got paid less because slide oil was cheaper. So, to qualify for the additional payments, he used to pre-record his solos on the trombone, then in the performance he would mime along with the trumpet. That's part of how he got his very distinctive sound, through trying to make his trombone sound like a trumpet. He never actually knew how to play the trumpet. The biggest give-away for those "in the know", is his famous constant smile. Trumpet players need to let those "smiling" muscles atrophy so they can form a tight embouchure. Trombone players use a slightly different technique that actually stretch out those muscles. This is why, famously, trumpet players can't smile - they are physiologically incapable of doing so, while trombone players often grin like lunatics.
As a kid I would listen to my parents' vinyl recording of "Porgy & Bess" over & over again. "Summertime" was & still is my favorite track from that album. I have heard the song performed by a wide variety of artists & this version, by Satchmo & the incomparable Miss Ella, is the very best rendition of the song ever made, IMO. Nikita Angarski I agree with you Charlie Parker's cover of this song is also a timeless classic, but how Ella uses her voice like an instrument adds to the emotion. You can almost feel the baking sun on your back and the sweat dripping down your face, as you are picking the cotton in the Summertime heat. While the rich slave owner's kids are happy, playing and laughing in the garden pond. They are the same age as you, but born in different worlds.

Fantastic performance, but give some credit to the composer. He, too, was beyond genius. One more thing, Satchmo sang and people (me too!) loved his voice but yet he did not have a classically great voice. So...what makes him so much a star and then add to his voice Ella's classic sound and why is it so so so perfect?
For one thing, while Mr. raspy voice, that I loved all my life, had perfect pitch ! He was perfect contrast with Ella, who was also perfect, sang just like a bell......I think of them both quite often, and my small nothing brag, is that I got to sit on his lap as a child, and the thrill of Louis coming to town, on the back of a truck blowing that amazing horn, in 50s Louisiana......god I miss them both.
I often wonder what Gershwin would have gone onto......genius, so glad we have what we do...........he wrote the only American Opera, not sure what is out there now, hard to follow these days.......I treasure it all.
yes George Gershwin was a great composer but let us also remember that his brother Ira wrote many of the lyrics and I think(?) much of Porgey and Bess the first all African American only Broadway show--took a lot of guts by both of the Gershwin brothers
As a Black person born in US I feel a ansectrol connection to the song. Its as if they're singing of black/white people unique perspectives they could have, with a sense of sadness because of racism
*I like to sing along, thank you!* _August 1966 and I was listing to this song in my first car, a '55 Chevy 2dr, while driving along past all the miles of vineyards in Napa Valley, CA. It cost me $35 and gas was $0.25 cents a gallon._

It's a crying shame they just don't make music like this anymore. Today's music just can't compare. This music has Soul. It reaches in and grabs your heart. It leaves you changed. And it's something you want to hear again and again and again. I want to sing to my grandchildren. I'm so glad that somebody posted it. The choir invisible is blessed to have these two shining stars join their ranks.🙏🎶🌈

What a duo! Ella's voice and the sounds of Satchmo's horn...pure heaven.
This has to be one of the most sublime jazz duets ever made. Satchmo & Ella knew what they were doing. A golden age.
The original version of 'Summertime' was to be performed by a classically trained opera singer. 2:02
Summertime is an aria written by Gershwin for his folk opera Porgy and Bess.
The song incorporates jazz elements and classical styles from opera. 3:03

One more thing, Satchmo sang and people (me too!) loved his voice but yet he did not have a classically great voice. So...what makes him so much a star and then add to his voice Ella's classic sound and why is it so so so perfect?
It's the combination!

For one thing, while Mr. raspy voice, that I loved all my life, had perfect
pitch ! He was perfect contrast with Ella, who was also perfect, sang just like a bell......I think of them both quite often, and my small nothing brag, is that I
got to sit on his lap as a child, and the thrill of Louis coming to town, on the back of a truck blowing that amazing horn, in 50s Louisiana......god I miss them both.
I often wonder what Gershwin would have gone onto......genius, so glad
we have what we do...........he wrote the only American Opera, not sure what
is out there now, hard to follow these days.......I treasure it all.
yes George Gershwin was a great composer but let us also remember that his brother Ira wrote many of the lyrics and I think(?) much of Porgey and Bess the first all African American only Broadway show--took a lot of guts by both of the Gershwin brothers
This is still one of the best versions of this brilliant classic... *absolute-pure-magnificent perfection*!!!!
Wonderful people with incredible voices!!!

Soulful and beautiful "yeah you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky" love that line ❤❤❤
1:30 the vocals come in ❤️
Legendary recording ♡
Omg I can feel this music in my bones! Asombrosa melodia grandioso ! :)
Доречі, дійсно це і є перероблена українська колискова "Ой ходить сон біля вікон".
Великие .... обожаю. Мои родители пели ее в застольях. Живые.
