  • Yaoworat Road in Bangkok is the HEART of Bangkok Chinatown - home to some of the BEST Street Food in the world, some even with Michelin Stars! In this video, I visit Bangkok Chinatown for the FIRST TIME at night. We have lived in Thailand for 5 months now, with over a month of that in Bangkok - and we never went!
I try my FIRST EVER Tom Yum Goong, a traditional Thai Dessert, and something unique I have never seen before. There are also plenty of Street Performers and Buskers on Yaoworat Road, just adding to the atmosphere at this amazing and iconic Thai Street Food scene!
After stepping out on to Yaoworat Road from the hotel, I could feel the Street Food energy and vibe - truly, there is nowhere else like this on the planet when it comes to Street Food and Food Culture - just amazing!

Hi everyone! Since posting this I've had some of you comment and tell me the way they get the fins off the sharks isn't very humane. I don't support eating this dish now and I won't be having it myself but you are free to do as you wish!
Thank you SO much for liking and subscribing to my channel, it helps me so much with making these videos for you!

Birds' nests are made from saliva of the swift, the whole nest look like a little shell and the birds stick them to the walls of caves, or special buildings built specifically to house the birds. They don't taste much of anything but are highly prized for their supposed medicinal properties. Unlike other prized ingredients of Chinese traditional medicines, like tiger penis, bear bile, and rhino horns, the collection of swift nests is sustainable and doesn't harm the birds. As street food they are mainly sold as a light syrupy dessert which is pleasant enough. In Chinatown, there are specialist shops which sell the whole nests in boxes costing many thousands of bahts, or even 10000+, depending on quality.

I ate quite often for the bird nest and Chinese people like to eat it for healing when you get sick. Taste is good.

I was going to mention this in a comment but I'm so relieved you have now learnt this. My extended in-law family are Chinese and this is often served at family reunion dinners, even though it is considered rude of me to decline to eat it I always decline. My husband and daughter also refuse to eat it at these dinners.

Shark fin is liked for its unique texture, rather than flavour. Although very popular and prized, it's regarded as cruel as sharks are caught, their fins cut off, then the fish is thrown back into the sea where they literally drown.

You can try กระเพาะปลาน้ำแดง(fish airsac in red soup) or ซุปเห็นน้ำแดง( mushroom in red soup)
they are test like shark fins soup
Actually the flavor of shark fin soup came form chicken stock+many Chinese spice
the shark fin has no flavor they just put it for texture so you can use many think with
good texture as a replacement like baby bamboo, mushrooms, fist air sac, crispy pork skin that soak with the soup etc.

My tip for safe enjoyment of street food, avoiding the dreaded gastroenteritis, is if you are going to sit down to eat, check if the food stall has running water or some way of properly washing the bowls, spoons etc. If there is just a bucket of murky water for washing the bowls, it's probably populated with Hepatitis A, E Coli, and Salmonella, none of which are your friends.

Actually the shark fin is really controversial here in Thailand, Because they killed the sharks for only their fins. Thus a lot of people, including me, do not support eating this menu.
Btw, Have you ever try Pad Kaprao (stir fried Thai holy basil) before? You should try it! It's super popular in Thailand and it's going great with every kind of meat; shrimp, squid, chicken, pork, beef, and my favorite is crispy pork. And if you try it make sure it doesn't have another vegetable like beans, tiny corn, onion, or mushrooms. They're not authentic recipes. It only should have thai holy basils, chillies, garlics, and meat. And remember to order it with fried egg.

In terms of the shark fin and the bird's nest, both, I believe, would be on the pricier side when compared to the street food in and around the Yaowarat area. You'd basically be paying for the experience of eating those items. They're indulgences...delicacies even, mainly for their textures. They aren't your everyday choices...what a local might get because he's lazy to cook dinner. That said...they are good and have their merit. Shark fin is invariably prepared in soup, a kind of thicker broth. The fin itself is chopped up into thin strands and isn't recognizably "shark fin." It's a bit gelatinous and crunchy but, all in all, kind of neutral tasting. The bird's nest is usually served in soup as well. I have less experience with this. Although, I believe the bird's nest itself is gelatinous but with a gooey characteristic too as well as being crisp and pliable. There's another dish that goes by the moniker "bird's nest." It actually looks like a bird's nest, is crispy and fried, with stir fried vegetables nestled within it. But, I don't think that's the "bird's nest" that's being sold in Bangkok's Chinatown.

    • @josieliftsthings

Food videos seem to get high views count. If you plan to travel to different countries in the future, and filming food vlogs, your spiciness tolerance might get in a way of trying many interesting food. I'd say don't back away from spiciness by only sticking with your comfort zone type of food. Keep eating spicy food (on and off camera), but start from low spicy level and gradually increase little by little. When I was young I couldn't eat spicy at all. I didn't understand why people eat spicy, cuz it doesn't give us any flavor; unlike salty / sweet / sour , etc..... However, as time has gone by, I've realized that the spiciness acts as flavors amplifier; meaning, it amplifies / enhances the rest of other flavors. It also brings better Umami to the food. ....... It might take couple of years for you to get a hang of the spiciness, but it worth to practice. You'll have much better experience with food, in general (not only Thai food), for the rest of your life...... Just my opinion, you don't have to do it if you don't want to.

    • @josieliftsthings
      @josieliftsthings  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
