Thanks to a handful of my audience who were keen to point this out to me when I originally posted this video, I am now fully aware of Epiphany, or Three Kings Day. Since this movie is intended for American audiences (most of whom probably know nothing of Three Kings Day), maybe the narrator could have TOLD US about this holiday so the idea of the three kings giving gifts like Santa Claus doesn't sound completely ridiculous and out of nowhere. Thank you, movie!

    • @somegingerguy4242
      @somegingerguy4242 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Sadly, that's the problem with films like this. They assume the audience (adults and kids alike) are too stupid to comprehend a holiday besides Christmas or something, so they act like it doesn't exist and don't explain so it doesn't fudge up our "world-view". Movies suck sometimes, don't they?

Hinatachan360 My mother and cousin were born on the EVE of Epiphany. So all my aunts and uncles and their kids would come over to our house and celebrate their birthday and play music till late at night. Meanwhile all of us kids wanted to kick them all out so the Kings could show up at our house XD

So if Melchior supposed to be Santa based on that coal joke, does that mean he represents Christmas while Caspar represents Hanukkah and Balthazar represents Kwanzaa? Actually, that would be a lot better than them playing Santa on the 5th of January.

Keep in mind this is a Spanish movie. In Spain the Wise Men are called "Los Reyes Magos," the literal translation being "The Wizard Kings."
That's why they're wizards. And why the Star calls them "kings" when giving them their treasures.

If I was making a movie about Three Kings Day, it would still take place in modern day America but the kid is someone who doesn't know about Three Kings Day and has to be told by a narrator who is apart of a culture that celebrates it. I would choose someone who was Mexican-American or any Latin American culture since they are big about Epiphany. And he would tell the child about the Wise Men and a more accurate but dramatic description of their journey. The Wise Men wouldn't only be there, but it would also focus on Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. To make it a little bit more accurate, they wouldn't get to Bethlehem until Jesus was two as it was told in the Bible. They could make Herod cartoonishly villainous, but he would look more accurately Middle Eastern.
I do like the Dreamworks 2D late 90's/early 00's style of animation. I kind of wish Dreamworks could make movies like that again. And make them just astronomers, and not magicians because the Bible has a thing against magic users.

You make a very good point as well that it should be on a Latino perspective, it would be a good way to utilize that representation with the holiday. I’m Puerto Rican and although I’m not Christian, it’s become a big staple here in the Island. I wish it was utilized more as it’s dear to my heart.
I also vividly remember this tradition, my dad would have us pick grass and leave water for the Wise Men’s “camels” when they’d arrive at night. Not sure if that’s common but it’s a nice memory of my childhood.

I always hate it when they say that a female character is strong but all we get is a very unpleasant woman who says that she is capable, but more often than not needs to be saved by a man. That doesn’t make a woman a warrior, that makes her a bitch. A good example of a strong female character who kicks ass is Brienne of Tarth, she is strong because she kicks the ass of almost everyone there and she is a very tall woman, she doesn’t go around saying that she is a good fighter, she actually proves that she is a good fighter. Also when do right there is Wonder Woman who is a very kind character, but a very powerful warrior too. Being a strong female character doesn’t mean you have to be unpleasant, Brienne and Wonder Woman prove that. Also a strong female character also doesn’t mean that you have to be a warrior either, a strong female character can have strong convictions too or be useful in other areas like in intelligence like Hermione Granger is. So while the characters I listed along with other great ones will be remembered for a long time, I think that this lady will be forgotten very soon.

Still awaiting those movies about the _other_ gift-givers: St. Lucia (December 13th), La Befana (Epiphany), and Perchta/Berchte/Frau Holle (also Epiphany).
EDIT: I would have done the tests for the gifts differently. In order to get the gold, you have to prove your not greedy by not taking the other treasures in the room. In order to get the frankincense, you have to trust in your own senses to find it by ignoring the illusions in the room. In order to get the myrrh, you have to prove your compassion by choosing between plain water and myrrh on the same pedestal, you have to give up one to get the other, and you're only worthy of the myrrh if you bring the water to your thirsty companions.

So, Lucifer sends one stupid cartoonish villain to team up with another cartoonish villain to stop the birth of Jesus? Either this movie's version of the Devil is impressively stupid or he just wanted to get rid of Belial

I see the Obious problems in This movie. However i still really like it. It is really creative and it is wonderful to see the 3 wise men get some spotlight. Especially when It's giving a nod to the Spanish traditions of the 3 wise men/the 3 Kings. I'm not Spanish myself but i have been tought about the traditions by my Spanish teacher. The more i learn about Los Reyes magos (the 3 Kings/wise men) the more i appreciate This movie even It's mistakes.

24:40 actually that's tradition in latin countries. On the night of January 5 the three wise men (los 3 reyes magos) bring gifts bretty much like santa claus.

Honestly? If they'd left out the religious context and simply made it a fantasy film without the random cuts to modern day events at the beginning and end, this movie probably could've been a guilty pleasure. The animation is quite impressive, the art style is nice, and the variety of oddball characters are interesting enough despite their overall lack of development, but the shoddy writing/editing, the lack of logic/consistency, and the fact that it's meant to be an adaptation of a biblical story makes it come across as abysmal and extremely bizarre. If they'd just made this 100% fantasy, I could actually kinda' see it being a Quest For Camelot cash-in attempt XD

I have been wanting to check this film out myself but I can't fine copies or even streaming of it anywhere! Seriously, even illegal sites don't have it - it's a no-show here in the UK.

this technically isn't a Christmas movie
it's a movie for 3 kings day which is a separate holiday celebrated in Hispanic cultures
so yeah not a Christmas movie
edit- I should probably explain three kings day. celebrated on January 6th three kings day is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and Latin America where children leave out boxes of hay overnight for the camels of the three wise men to eat. the next day the children are rewarded for their help with gifts such as bicycles or skateboards.

Maybe someone already said this and I'm not defending the movie, but I just wanted to explain why the 3 wise men are wizards. In Spanish, we call them "los Tres Reyes Magos", the 3 Magician Kings. They're called magicians because they were men of science when science was magic for common people, and Kings because of future events, where some Spanish author started to named them that way (like with the case of Santa's reindeers). That's why in the movie they have powers and are called kings.
Again, I'm not defending the movie, but I wanted to add a little trivia.
