  • Discover how to layer hair on top of the head using a diamond section to create a sense of movement back and away from the face.
    This is an excellent layering technique for the modern shag haircut as the top detaches from the underneath, allowing you to maintain weight and length over the ear.
    Tools used for this technique:

    This is the EXACT cut I have been trying to get, but every stylist keeps pulling my hair straight back at a slight angle and I end up with short layers. Your technique and explanation is prefect!

    This channel just showed up on my feed today. I'm not sure why, but I am very glad of it. I have been cutting my own hair since I was fourteen. I don't do a lot of fancy things with my own hair, but it is nice to know this stuff for subtle shaping, especially when I am helping someone else. It's really cool to see how other types of shears can be used, as well.

      he is awesome! if I don't whack mine off myself,I'm showing this to hairstylist I use but she'll still screw it up by cutting one of the 4 styles she learned in school. it's been my experience that men are more passionate, better skilled at styling hair.

    • @cherylrobb2599
      @cherylrobb2599 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      tashhosein it's not how u cut it exactly it's how u dry it. try blasting n rubbing your crown area upwards with the dryer facing up and control it with fingers. wait till its dry at roots then section n dry your root area up towards the centre overlapping your root area then down. do this all around ur crown and at front same, facing your parting . see how you get on. also I find a good teqnuiqe is dry hairspray. it is sprayed directly into the top layers of your root n rubbed in. hope it helps. love cheryl xx.

    Mr Villa, I have been inspired and encouraged to try your tips in these videos you so generously share within our industry. You are easy to understand and I'm grateful for the love you have to share, as you are so successful yet a humble man and master hair craftsman. I have the shears you first launched way back. I use Kokoro and Hikari shears, the latter were stolen :(
    I had an accident that damaged my right hand causing me to lose the use of right hand to cut. Good news is after physical therapy and hard work? I'm ready now to do what I love and do best, CUT hair. My thanks to you and your team family for sharing your knowledge and love for our beloved industry. I'm so thrilled to get behind the chair and let my creativity flow. And when I start building my clientale again. My first shear purchase will be of your shears. I've obviously never used swill shears, so I will buy your's, new changes need the right tools. My humblest thanks for your mastery & sharing yourself to my craft. Much appreciation, so glad I can learn from and with you. Helen.

      Same! I was totally butchered twice. Grew out the first fiasco and a witch butchered it again. ( I almost went to jail because I chased said witch through the salon with scissors , I was going to cut all hers off) She pretended to be so sympathetic when I told her about having my hair ruined ...then she preceded to cut it all off. My hair now looks like 60's Yoko Ono but I am terrified to get it cut. :(

      @MzClementine 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Charlot Chaplin I had hair past my tail bone. He chopped it to my shoulders and then kept cutting. Before I knew it I had a boys hair cut! Literally above my ears😑 The next day I went in to complain to the manager. He was using my hair for extensions!!! I flipped out! The woman getting her hair with my hair freaked out too! He was fired on the spot! Both myself and the woman having her extensions done demanded he no longer work there. I have fallen from trust with hair dressers. And I truly need one now. 😔

    • @Mimi-cq4bg
      @Mimi-cq4bg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Charlot Chaplin I once went in to get my hair coloured to a platinum blond... the hairdresser loaded me up with bleach and left me under the dryer.... where she promptly forgot I was there. I'd never gone light blond before, I had no clue how long the product should be on. she came back when I told another lady that my head was starting to itch and sting. when the first hairdresser looked terrified, I knew it would be bad. she started washing my hair out and that's when the pain really kicked in. there were chemical burns on my scalp. I could see the burns because there was so little hair left. I took a diy course at my local college and I've cut and coloured my own hair since.

      because it seems to me , where I'm from anyway, the women may have one been passionate about what they do but have long since stopped carving. they may as well be grooming a dog for all they care. some are just lazy. I have very long thick hair & I'm willing to pay double + tip to have something like a bodywave done to it but I've had some tell me" sorry,I don't have time" ,or" it won't take "(it will)or try to convince me of how pretty I'd look w/ short hair. some don't continue thier education, keeping up w/ latest styles. seems as though they know 4 styles & regardless of what I ask for they cut it however they chose. the young ones r the worst. if your over 39 they seem to be confused as to why I'm bothering w/ trying to look good & most stare into space during the " consultation " which should be three words or less. I stopped using a guy after 25 years because he insisted I cut my hair short,when I refused he mocked me & did a shit job , became a disrespectful jerk. guess I'm not young enough to be part of his clientele anymore.

      +Michael Williams (wife) I once dreamed of being a hairdresser or a nurse. I think both are equally important. I wanted to help people. by being a hairdresser I could help people look good,I'm a firm beliver in ,if u look good,you'll feel good. you have the power to change a woman's life by possibly helping her feel better about herself. or if your bad at what u do & don't care,u can make her miserable because u didn't bother listening to her or pretended to know what she ment during the consultation. these young girls don't seem to realize that us older women still care about looking as sexy as possible, even if only for our husbands or making our friends jealous. and we have money that we will gladly tip u w/ & if my husband jumps my bones when he gets home,I'll continue to return & over tip. be passionate in what your doing & knock off the too cool for school bullshit. be the best hairstylist u can be or start grooming dogs. now I'm going to watch this video to learn how to cut it myself because I'm tired of getting screwed,hearing y'all gossip about your clients knowing your doing same to me when I leave. P.S. a 3yr old can cut hair,it's not unreasonable to expect better from a hairstylist

I have had many hairdressers try to cut my bangs where they can be worn in sidesweep as well as straight, but they never come out right. I like to wear my hair in a long shag with face framing layers rather than away from my face. Any advice I can pass along to my stylist? I have highlighted blonde hair. I know this is an old video but I just found it! I love Sam cutting hair and what he achieves. I’ve tried quite a few salons over the years to get blended layers the way he does and the hairdressers have not been able to. My hair always wound up choppy. It’s long now and I’d like to keep the length (with a trim of about 1 - 2 inches) and have my hair layers top to bottom like Sam does, with my whisky bangs. Can anyone recommend a salon in New York City that they know will understand this type of layering? Thank you in advance to anyone that responds. Peace!

      Brookdale Great Falls I feel ya! So frustrating...They blow out my thick massive curly hair straight & cut it with their little strait hair template and then I get home and try to style it myself and it’s totally shapeless. $100 down the drain.

    Did I hear that right? Longer on top due to diagonal forward finger angle? I’m wondering if he also means finger angle is parallel to the parting.

    wish I could have seen the finished product. I want to get a shagy cut. I wore one in the 70's, and there was only one fellow in my area that cut it correctly. I was young then and could afford his prices on a regular basis. Others that cut, to maintain it...still didn't do a good job. I would like to take a picture or video to my now hairdresser for an example. Could you direct me to something of yours that is good enough for her to follow. I now have just below the shoulder length in the back and chin length in the front. I am NOT wanting much length taken, just want the softened look that you described. I do hope you read this comment, and can help me out. I am a desperate 60yrs old woman, and need professional help with this. Thanks, Cheryl😚

    Can you recommend a stylist who can cut not your average type of caucasian curly hair in the Phoenix area???
    I feel like giving up. One $80 hair cut after another with no luck since I moved here 4 years ago.

    Sam, I have thin hair on the top which makes my hair look flat. What kind of hair cut would you recommend to add volume?
