This video is a miracle!😂 I'm visiting Istanbul next Friday for the first time in my life. Can't wait to experience the city through my lens. Thanks, Roman 👌
Edit (end of June 2022): I can't thank you enough, Roman! My Trip to Istanbul was amazing, and your suggestions definitely were on of the reasons. My personal Highlight was shooting the sunset on the Princes Island (Heybeliada & Büyükada) and ofc. the food ;). I agree with everything in this video (also listen carefully to the "general tips" part). I would suggest: 1. to plan at least 5 days to experience Istanbul, each additional day would make everything more relaxed, obviously. 2. learn some Turkish, it definitely lets you connect better with the locals and in my case lead to better pictures on the streets of Istanbul.

I wish I wasn't writing this but there are some wank stains out there trying to scam people by pretending to be me... please report any comment that is not from me. How do you know? I will not ask you for your telegram or WhatsApp. I will not message you to say you've won £100000 (sorry). If the comment seems to be off... it's because it is. Please use your common sense.

As a local, and an amateur photographer, and an urban planner, I would like to express my gratitude to you on how well and balanced you have represented the city. Great captures as well. I have to warn people, though, that most places change in every 3-5 years so you may need to find new cafes and places. Roman if you ever visit again, you have a free coffee from me :) Personally I believe north of the city also requires a special day or two. Best regards.

I was there in 2020 for a few months for my wife to deliver our first baby and frequently pass through once or twice a year. I was shocked this year when I ordered yemeksepeti to our Airbnb how expensive everything has gotten in your city. I hope your inflation issues are solved soon.

Enjoyed the video. Visited Istanbul in March for 5 nights. Probably needed twice as long to cover more of the city, e.g. the islands you mention, but 5 nights was a good taster. Certainly felt like I was on the edge of Europe and heading into the east. (GR3)

Well done!! I lived in Istanbul / Bebek late 80s for Uni. It was so nice to see my old stomping grounds captured so nicely. Seems like you’ve had a good time, and especially you were able to spend more than just a few days. As you’ve found out, Istanbul is very large and very rich in its offerings to a photographer.

Great video Roman . Having been to Istanbul twice, I reckon you have covered many of the locations I enjoyed. I agree that the ferries are a great place to get shots and move around especially if you get an Istanbulkart as soon as you arrive. Another couple of locations to consider are Miniaturk and Pierre Loti in Eyup but there are so many. I'm spending a month there in Sept/Oct to update my albums and don't believe that I will ever tire of the place, people and food.

I used to live there and you did a great job capturing its charm and beauty. An additional suggestion: take the local ferries up to the many neighborhoods and villages up the Bosporus, especially between the first and second suspension bridges and beyond. Evenings and weekends you’ll see many Istanbullis strolling along the waterside promenades. Fantastic for fresh air, exercise and people watching all at once.

A great summary, well done Roman 👏 As a local of Istanbul, thank you for your time and effort 👍
Clearly there are plenty more to see and shoot in this thousands year old city but who has enough time eh :)
There are very special spots hidden in both the Historic Peninsula and other parts of Turkey, the intersection of cultures.
It is worth documenting really, why not a hard copy of "Through the Lens of" and also you might have a real good chance widen your diet btw, food for thought...

Good review of your Istanbul journey? I remember Istanbul, I was there many years ago before the Gulf war. It is very much as you described it in the video. I travelled to the south of Turkey all the way to Adana, and Izmir and back to Istanbul. I noticed then that very young kids liked to smoke Marlboro cigarettes and people smoked heavily in the bus travelling from one city to another that I had to request to have the vents opened. It was a great memorable time. Than you for the video it brought back some memories. Cheers.

I've a year left to be a graduate student, So I have to go outside and take pictures on all the holidays that pass me by I have an album with more than 4K photos of this great historical city.

I downloaded the Istanbul Zine and want to thank you for such a great collection of truly inspiring photos. Istanbul never ceases to amaze me and I can't wait to return. One of my favorite spots is at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in the Old City. There is an outdoor sculpture garden with some great photo opportunities. There is a lot of ancient art worthy of creative photos inside the museum as well. I found the funerary sculpture from Palmyra particularly memorable. I hope you get a chance to return to Istanbul soon. Thanks again!

I totally agree your advice about having light photo gear, while walking in Istanbul. I have used Fujifilm cameras for a couple of years until I decided switching to full frame Sony system. I mostly travel with my Sony RX1RMK2 or Sony A7C with 24 + 40mm primes, which weighs only about 165 grams each.

We were in Istanbul about 10-12 years ago. So many places to go and see. Visited the touristy Basilica cistern where scenes from the James Bond movie From Russia with Love were filmed. While wandering on another day, got some simit (bread ring) from a street vendor. Yes, we were 'dragged' into a rug shop (had some time to kill) but did not buy anything, probably to the dismay of the owners.

What a great video! Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
