I just returned from Cappadoccia one day ago. Did quite few activities, paid for ballon ride 120$, jeep tour 25$, underground city tour and other places 35$ for 6 hrs. Hotel 64$ a night-gorgeous place. For locals there are different prices for tours and activities. People live off the tourism there-like everywhere tourist friendly place so there is no reason to complain. No one is forcing anyone to go there.
I went to Cappadocia 23 years ago. There were no hot air baloons, no atv , jeep or horse rides. There was not even an "open air museum". It was all free to roam. I feel blessed to have known it that way. We got stuck in a hailstorm in pigeon valley walking through, now one of my best memories (but at the time it was not!)

I'm not a local though, but rather a person who enjoys genuine interactions with folk who aren't just seeking to empty your pockets and thus I wouldn't too quickly recommend it to anyone unless they like the sound of noisy ATVs and getting ripped off. 😅
I was fortunate enough to go there a few months after COVID hit, in what would normally be peak season, and there were very few tourists. It was INCREDIBLE! The place felt like it was just being discovered. I don't mean to sound selfish or irresponsible, but Turkey, especially Cappadocia were one of the top places on my travel wish list, and to experience a place like that with perfect weather and almost no tourists was a once in a lifetime opportunity, that I'll probably never get again!
I went to Cappadocia a month ago, and I did everything on my own, just taking local buses, being dropped in the main road and walking to the most spectacular places. I also took a bus to Kaymakli to see the underground cities. I did a hike from cavusin to Zelve open air museum, everything by myself, that was one of the highlights of my trip. I think is totally doable if you have the energy. I had the opportunity to fly in the hot air balloon, I searched for hours and I couldn't find anything cheaper than $250, paying in cash, I even went to the operator, but was the same price. They said, in august all the prices raised to 250, a horrible news!
Sounds like a lovely experience to explore everything yourself! It gives a lot more to the place to move around freely without big groups where a lot of the magic goes missing.
that is very unfortunate. People may do it less and less and it will eventually go down again "I hope" or just air balloon on the best next country "Egypt" for 30 Euro ahaha
$250? I went in September during COVID and paid $150, which I already felt was too expensive, but it was something I really wanted to do, and $150 was literally the top of my budget. Some things are worth splurging on. But multiple that by the 30 people they cram into their basket and look how much money they make for just a few hours of work. These people are living the dream.

I was in Cappadocia in October, on a tour (I’m a little too old for solo travel) it was fantastic, crowds weren’t too bad. The Turkish people were indeed wonderful. A truly amazing place
Fascinating to watch this! I travelled Turkiye by any means for more than 9 weeks back in 1996 including walking through Cappadocia. Back then it was cheap, few tourists except the museum, but it was March, cold and snowing. I don't think balloons were around then. I took a bus from Pamukkale to Kayseri then walked to Goreme accompanied by a friendly stray dog, which stuck around for 3 days.
Having recently spent a month in Turkiye I found myself scrolling through comments to compare my experiences. Your comment stopped dead. Where does one forward a complaint. Turkish people and land are outstanding. The tour company left a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t expect to recover anything, but some of them are doing a disservice to your great land and should be sanctioned.
@@annekenyon8333 It's the same everywhere mass tourism touches. It's honorable that some Turkish people like the guy above try to improve things but honestly the best thing you can do is not visit such places. It's not about Turkish culture, it's the tourist money that destroys everything.

I visited Cappadocia, the only thing I was afraid to do if fly hot air balloon for $350. In spring I will definitely take a balloon. Breath taking place. Nice job in providing the highlights. We recently went to Istanbul & Cappadocia and had a wonderful time. Yes, the people are so friendly and food is amazing. We did do the hot air ballon ride; 200 euro each person. It was an amazing experience and was worth it!! God willing my husband and I want to go back to Turkey to visit other places. We visited Cappadocia yesterday. It was cold, but we could explore freely. There were few people. We booked the balloon flight for 2400 TLR on 18th December. It was an amazing experience. It is worth trying. We explored goreme, nevisher underground town, pottery village and I even made my own pot. It is a well worth experience. We also enjoyed the sunset. You can easily explore all the towns. Take public bus which runs every 30 minutes. Not crowded at all. very cheap. just 35 TLR. Agents do not promote public transport. All the sites are reachable through public buses and mini buses

We were in Turkey for a couple of weeks, coming home just last week. Cappadocia was definitely a highlight, more for the history than the balloons.. (we did not ride) The one thing you mentioned was the generosity at the post office. We found everyone was kind and giving. Also please talk about the local fruits and produce from the area. We were enthralled with the walnut trees (hoping you enjoyed yours) the grapevines and the number of others fruit trees that patchwork across the area. The pumpkin fields where the locals harvest pumpkin seeds too. I’m subscribing to your channel when I finish this message because I’m in love with the country,as we saw it, with the people that we met, and with the food and hospitality that greeted us. Yeah, but the overcharging usually only happens when people don't have the knowledge of the price level and therefore are willing to pay. Our experience at least in Turkey so far is that people have been nice and welcoming but there are some bad apples everywhere.

I was just there, early Oct. 2022. I agree with all of the points made in this video but none more than to rent a car and be free of the tours and the constraints they bring. I understand they exist for a reason, but just booking tours and relying on a for profit person or entity to show you around is a mistake if I ever knew one, especially in this area. Also, most of the time, just being alone with my wife, or other "explorers" was rewarding. Per western (US) prices, the cave hotels were not terribly priced -- try to book in advance. I actually stayed in Uchisar and it was fantastic, look for reviews, that are both numerous in nature and generally positive. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. We paid about 250 $/€ per person for a balloon ride with Flower Balloons. This was in line with the 200-250 $/€ most people were being quoted to have the hotel book the ride. We did this last minute as my wife was unsure of whether or not she wanted to go for the flight. I know the hotel staff made some money on it, but I witnessed the gentleman make no fewer than 7 different calls to different companies to get us a spot for the next morning. He earned his money in my opinion. In the US, during Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, I was seeing prices upwards of $300-400/pp during the fiesta, and upwards of $500 in 2022, so the $500 for two in Kapadokya, plus the backdrop you get is a relative bargain. I just hope they pay the pilots more money and invest that into flight time, etc. The pilots and the support staff, IMO, are crucial to making your experience great. Get the museum pass if you visit all the sites and then move on to other sites like we did such as Pamukkale/Denizli and Ephesus/Selcuk/Izmir plus Istanbul. Turkey is an amazing place - Jeremy/Miami, FL.
@@kcastano6733 you will notice that at the various entrances to the sites they have the museum pass option or the individual ticket to the site you’re at. Simply get the museum pass if you intend to visit many sites. I believe it hovers around 1000 TL per person.

I've just returned from Turkey 3 days ago. Amazing country, great people, great food. Museum's prices are outrageous though (look for the museum pass, 165 euro but you may get to save some money). Rule#1 in Turkey, never buy anything before you know the price. Asked for 2 icecreams in Goreme, the man said 15 euro 😮 (500 tl). The baloon tour is mandatory but choose well, read the reviews first. Safety first! ( Turca baloon was top experience), got a fair price at Getyourguide Rented a car for 4 days in Antalya for 105 euro, and traveled west bound. ( I do recommed a visit to Kaş). Domestic flights are cheap (54 euro) and Turkish airlines a good company) I'll definitely come back to Turkey.
I was there last month, I did a bus tour with a group of 12 people with a good guide,it was really beautiful and the price for the tour was ok, but we couldn't do the balloon ride. First they wanted 280 € , but then it was cancelled, and for the next day it was 400€, but then we didn't want to spend so much money.

I can add an advice that guests should see especially Goreme Open Air Museum if they are interested in history and Early Christian life; If not they can find many fabulous points to take photos in this 30 35 km area.As you said at the right place and on the right time.Thank you.

i live in The Netherlands but i am from a small villiage at the banks of the salt lake , Which is very close to Cappadocia . Truely an amazing place full of nature and history . Very pretty
For renting i would go with discover cars they have quite good prices all around the globe and when it comes to driving... well it's quite the same as anywhere in the world. All the laws are in place and nothing to be afraid of.
Turist agencies are offical burgler offices... and its not just in Kapadokya... all arround the country if you dont have a good plan, you lost lots of money for nothing. Thank you two for this full information video.
Average turkish local citizens cannot afford visiting and staying cappadocia, antalya and bodrum and turkish mediterrenean because of rocket emerging prices in hotels and restaurant and activities. This also not good for future turkish tourism,
I am from cappaadocia, my father born in a museum in Mustafapaşa (at that time it wasn’t a museum it was his home) I went there tausends of time, ofc experienced many things but not even one time I experienced the life that the tourists have experienced there. Also to be fair, in my childhood there was no such a gap between tourists and us. They were also broke like us :)). I remember we welcomed a couple in our house in Şahinefendi köyü, and we fed them because they were hungry :.). Anyways in that time you can find fresh walnuts, grapes there, we have just harvested 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, we are not there :/. We would be so happy to host you. Just because people are able to travel it doesn't mean they are rich, a lot of the time people are left with no money. I think a lot of people in beautiful countries/places such as Turkiye assume people have lots of money, but that person could have saved money for years to afford the holiday. Hi, I have a question. In the first part you suggested to rent a car in Kayseri, do I need to have an international driving permit to drive it? Because I saw online that if I was staying for lesser than 3 months, I do not need an IDP. Some other websites said 6 months. There are also websites that said no matter how long I stayed, I would need an IDP together with my license from my home country to drive in Turkey. Can you please clarify? Thx 🙏
The best way to visit Cappadocia is on foot and avoiding classic bus tours spot. Even in overcrowded days it is possible to find hidden spot with no people and beautiful landscapes (Red and Rose Valley, Love valley…). At it’s completely free of charge!
What kind of car you would recommend to rent while in Cappadocia? I mean are those roads really bumpy there so is the SUV better option than some smaller car?
The red tour is 35 euros each and they take you to a lot of nice places, entrance fees included with a guide and free lunch. That’s not expensive at all!
There is green and red tours. Each tour will have a list of places and activities to see in a whole day. Our hotel was asking $73 euro per person. We were there last week. Food is expensive (comparing it to our 2016 visit).

If you have the time and patience then your absolutely right to do it your way.....But if not I rather pay for a 2 day Cappadocia Excursion... hit the multiple tourist spots, the hotel, Hot air Balloon ride etc without having to plan everything myself, theres also some mental comfort trusting the tour guides to take us everywhere and not having to worry about things. I have other things that are on my itinerary to do, one less thing to worry about.
I was born near this region Every time I come to this region, I feel that money and technology are not important in human life. You will walk around at sunrise in the morning when there is snow outside, then you will understand me
I went to Cappadocia last week. Amazing place and this video really captures the magic of the place. Balloon prices ranged from €165-220 for a 20 person basket. We opted just to take sunrise pictures from our hotel terrace and on top of the hill which gave breathtaking views. We did a local tour which was €45 and enjoyed it. Just be aware if your tour stops at the big, shiny stores selling local products that they are outrageously overpriced. For example I bought chocolate almonds that you can get in Tokyo for less!
Thank you for this overview of how your experience was! Yeah, I have also had a similar experience with big guided tours, where the overall Price is cheaper but the expensive stops probably make up for it for the company.
So glad you're covering this... I recently left Cappadocia after hiking the Lycian Way and had the same feel about the place. Incredible rock formations and ancient history sadly tainted by a certain type of tourism which I absolutely do not resonate with, ridiculous prices and people who interact with you not out of any genuine interest, but purely because they want to sell you something. I managed to get away from it all for a night and call one of the old caves my home, which was great, but everything else was quite bleh after experiencing some of the quaint villages and more isolated spots on the Lykia hike

I visited there as a local in 2017 and remember that I refused a 100 tl offer which was 28$ back then, 250$ nowadays is a money that only tourists could afford and it's shame to be that expensive. Local tourism agencies and currency with the inflation makes it hard to travel for a local even inside of Turkey, abroad became a dream for most(passports, visa costs etc. is also expensive let alone plane tickets.)
That was a bargain indeed for $28! I feel it is also a pity that most locals cannot enjoy the wonders here and that inflation also makes it hard to travel abroad. But Hopefully it will change for the better soon!
Hi, did you have any issues traveling and flying your drone in Cappadocia? Are foreign nationals allowed to bring and fly drones that weigh less than 500 grams (DJI Minis) in Turkey without any registrations and licenses?
My hometown is near Cappadocia and I have never seen the balloon prices as low as €25. Maybe you are using today’s currencies for last year’s prices? I don’t remember it being lower than €100.
Same. I’ve been living here for 10 years. The cheapest I saw was 80€. Last year was during the pandemic only few balloons were flying and there were few international tourists.
I am also a local here and have to agree with this comment. I liked the video a lot as you have given good advice on most parts but this part about balloon prices is pretty inaccurate. I have never seen it below 70-80 EURO. Also this is not just a trap but unfortunately the economic situation of Turkey at the moment. Whilst tourists can enjoy our activities the locals can’t because of the currency.
i am traveling this month and renting a car to watch all these places by myself. i am also not booking any balloon ride as my wife afraid of heights and also it is too expensive . my biggest issue is now the food. i also like small but authenticated places but how to find it and get original dishes not same touristy restaurant with same dishes. could you provide any hint how to find good restaurants or list of recommendations

No such thing, the balloons start from different places each morning. But there are many good spots marked on ioverlander app if you want to have a look
Nice video! I agree with most of the points, except that Cappadocia has no public transport at all. It has. For example, you can get from Göreme to Kaymaklı cave city by public transport. Although you need to change a bus in Nevşehir, it's not hard to find stops, buses run every half an hour and it's not a long distance. It costs 66 lira per person (round trip). For comparison, in a taxi, the same route would cost 1200-1500 lire. As for renting a car, In my opinion, it is comfortable, but troublesome, gasoline is expensive, and there is a risk of damaging the car. We visited all the valleys by foot, sometimes returning to Göreme by taxi for 100-150 liras to save time and not go down the dusty road. As for ballons it's a big big lottery. If you're lucky you will get a life changing expirience. If you're not your balloon can hang in one place, unsuccessfully trying to gain altitude, and then quickly complete the flight.

I didn’t find any ballon rides and other activities in that price range.. did you use online website or book it when you were there

$250? I went in September during COVID and paid $150, which I already felt was too expensive, but it was something I really wanted to do, and $150 was literally the top of my budget. Some things are worth splurging on. But multiple that by the 30 people they cram into their basket and look how much money they make for just a few hours of work. These people are living the dream.

I was in Cappadocia in October, on a tour (I’m a little too old for solo travel) it was fantastic, crowds weren’t too bad. The Turkish people were indeed wonderful. A truly amazing place
Fascinating to watch this! I travelled Turkiye by any means for more than 9 weeks back in 1996 including walking through Cappadocia. Back then it was cheap, few tourists except the museum, but it was March, cold and snowing. I don't think balloons were around then. I took a bus from Pamukkale to Kayseri then walked to Goreme accompanied by a friendly stray dog, which stuck around for 3 days.

It truly is a magical place!! My favourite thing to do in Cappadocia is getting lost in the free caves and the valleys 😍 I was so surprised at how expensive the things are when there are so many free things to do!

I visited Cappadocia, the only thing I was afraid to do if fly hot air balloon for $350. In spring I will definitely take a balloon. Breath taking place. We did do the hot air ballon ride; 200 euro each person. It was an amazing experience and was worth it!! God willing my husband and I want to go back to Turkey to visit other places. We visited Cappadocia yesterday. It was cold, but we could explore freely. There were few people. We booked the balloon flight for 2400 TLR on 18th December. It was an amazing experience. It is worth trying. We explored goreme, nevisher underground town, pottery village and I even made my own pot. It is a well worth experience. We also enjoyed the sunset. You can easily explore all the towns. Take public bus which runs every 30 minutes. Not crowded at all. very cheap. just 35 TLR. Agents do not promote public transport. All the sites are reachable through public buses and mini buses

We were in Turkey for a couple of weeks, coming home just last week.
Cappadocia was definitely a highlight, more for the history than the balloons.. (we did not ride)
The one thing you mentioned was the generosity at the post office. We found everyone was kind and giving.
Also please talk about the local fruits and produce from the area. We were enthralled with the walnut trees (hoping you enjoyed yours) the grapevines and the number of others fruit trees that patchwork across the area. The pumpkin fields where the locals harvest pumpkin seeds too.

Yeah, but the overcharging usually only happens when people don't have the knowledge of the price level and therefore are willing to pay. Our experience at least in Turkey so far is that people have been nice and welcoming but there are some bad apples everywhere.

I was just there, early Oct. 2022. I agree with all of the points made in this video but none more than to rent a car and be free of the tours and the constraints they bring. I understand they exist for a reason, but just booking tours and relying on a for profit person or entity to show you around is a mistake if I ever knew one, especially in this area. Also, most of the time, just being alone with my wife, or other "explorers" was rewarding.
Per western (US) prices, the cave hotels were not terribly priced -- try to book in advance. I actually stayed in Uchisar and it was fantastic, look for reviews, that are both numerous in nature and generally positive. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.
We paid about 250 $/€ per person for a balloon ride with Flower Balloons. This was in line with the 200-250 $/€ most people were being quoted to have the hotel book the ride. We did this last minute as my wife was unsure of whether or not she wanted to go for the flight. I know the hotel staff made some money on it, but I witnessed the gentleman make no fewer than 7 different calls to different companies to get us a spot for the next morning. He earned his money in my opinion. In the US, during Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, I was seeing prices upwards of $300-400/pp during the fiesta, and upwards of $500 in 2022, so the $500 for two in Kapadokya, plus the backdrop you get is a relative bargain. I just hope they pay the pilots more money and invest that into flight time, etc. The pilots and the support staff, IMO, are crucial to making your experience great.
Get the museum pass if you visit all the sites and then move on to other sites like we did such as Pamukkale/Denizli and Ephesus/Selcuk/Izmir plus Istanbul. Turkey is an amazing place - Jeremy/Miami, FL.

@@kcastano6733 you will notice that at the various entrances to the sites they have the museum pass option or the individual ticket to the site you’re at. Simply get the museum pass if you intend to visit many sites. I believe it hovers around 1000 TL per person.

I've just returned from Turkey 3 days ago. Amazing country, great people, great food.
Museum's prices are outrageous though (look for the museum pass, 165 euro but you may get to save some money).
Rule#1 in Turkey, never buy anything before you know the price. Asked for 2 icecreams in Goreme, the man said 15 euro 😮 (500 tl).
The baloon tour is mandatory but choose well, read the reviews first. Safety first! ( Turca baloon was top experience), got a fair price at Getyourguide
Rented a car for 4 days in Antalya for 105 euro, and traveled west bound. ( I do recommed a visit to Kaş).
Domestic flights are cheap (54 euro) and Turkish airlines a good company)
I'll definitely come back to Turkey.

Amazing, wonderful Cappadocia
I was there last month, I did a bus tour with a group of 12 people with a good guide,it was really beautiful and the price for the tour was ok, but we couldn't do the balloon ride. First they wanted 280 € , but then it was cancelled, and for the next day it was 400€, but then we didn't want to spend so much money.

Would love to hear advice on renting cars in Turkiye and driving tips.
For renting i would go with discover cars they have quite good prices all around the globe and when it comes to driving... well it's quite the same as anywhere in the world. All the laws are in place and nothing to be afraid of.
They say that drones are not permitted for tourists in Cappadocia, but I noticed that you have drone footage in your video. Thank you.

I am from cappaadocia, my father born in a museum in Mustafapaşa (at that time it wasn’t a museum it was his home) I went there tausends of time, ofc experienced many things but not even one time I experienced the life that the tourists have experienced there. Also to be fair, in my childhood there was no such a gap between tourists and us. They were also broke like us :)). I remember we welcomed a couple in our house in Şahinefendi köyü, and we fed them because they were hungry :.).
Anyways in that time you can find fresh walnuts, grapes there, we have just harvested 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, we are not there :/. We would be so happy to host you. Also I watched so many videos like you post, I can safely say that your videos are the best among them. Yolunuz açık olsun :))

Just because people are able to travel it doesn't mean they are rich, a lot of the time people are left with no money. Hi, I have a question. In the first part you suggested to rent a car in Kayseri, do I need to have an international driving permit to drive it? Because I saw online that if I was staying for lesser than 3 months, I do not need an IDP. Some other websites said 6 months. There are also websites that said no matter how long I stayed, I would need an IDP together with my license from my home country to drive in Turkey. Can you please clarify? Thx 🙏
The best way to visit Cappadocia is on foot and avoiding classic bus tours spot. Even in overcrowded days it is possible to find hidden spot with no people and beautiful landscapes (Red and Rose Valley, Love valley…). At it’s completely free of charge!

The red tour is 35 euros each and they take you to a lot of nice places, entrance fees included with a guide and free lunch. That’s not expensive at all!

Istambul merecia muito mais tempo pois há o lado Asiático que é bem interessante. Tive pouco tempo e mesmo o Europeu mais moderno não consegui conhecer bem.

If you have the time and patience then your absolutely right to do it your way.....But if not I rather pay for a 2 day Cappadocia Excursion... hit the multiple tourist spots, the hotel, Hot air Balloon ride etc without having to plan everything myself, theres also some mental comfort trusting the tour guides to take us everywhere and not having to worry about things. I have other things that are on my itinerary to do, one less thing to worry about.

I went to Cappadocia last week. Amazing place and this video really captures the magic of the place. Balloon prices ranged from €165-220 for a 20 person basket. We opted just to take sunrise pictures from our hotel terrace and on top of the hill which gave breathtaking views.
We did a local tour which was €45 and enjoyed it. Just be aware if your tour stops at the big, shiny stores selling local products that they are outrageously overpriced. For example I bought chocolate almonds that you can get in Tokyo for less!

So glad you're covering this... I recently left Cappadocia after hiking the Lycian Way and had the same feel about the place. Incredible rock formations and ancient history sadly tainted by a certain type of tourism which I absolutely do not resonate with, ridiculous prices and people who interact with you not out of any genuine interest, but purely because they want to sell you something. I managed to get away from it all for a night and call one of the old caves my home, which was great, but everything else was quite bleh after experiencing some of the quaint villages and more isolated spots on the Lykia hike

I visited there as a local in 2017 and remember that I refused a 100 tl offer which was 28$ back then, 250$ nowadays is a money that only tourists could afford and it's shame to be that expensive. Local tourism agencies and currency with the inflation makes it hard to travel for a local even inside of Turkey, abroad became a dream for most(passports, visa costs etc. is also expensive let alone plane tickets.)
That was a bargain indeed for $28! I feel it is also a pity that most locals cannot enjoy the wonders here and that inflation also makes it hard to travel abroad. But Hopefully it will change for the better soon!

My hometown is near Cappadocia and I have never seen the balloon prices as low as €25. Maybe you are using today’s currencies for last year’s prices? I don’t remember it being lower than €100.
I agree with this comment. It was always at least 100euros per person. There is a miss calculation probably bc of the currency value changes.

I am also a local here and have to agree with this comment. I liked the video a lot as you have given good advice on most parts but this part about balloon prices is pretty inaccurate. I have never seen it below 70-80 EURO. Also this is not just a trap but unfortunately the economic situation of Turkey at the moment. Whilst tourists can enjoy our activities the locals can’t because of the currency.
In 2016, we paid $100 euro per person.

i am traveling this month and renting a car to watch all these places by myself. i am also not booking any balloon ride as my wife afraid of heights and also it is too expensive . my biggest issue is now the food. i also like small but authenticated places but how to find it and get original dishes not same touristy restaurant with same dishes. could you provide any hint how to find good restaurants or list of recommendations
Very honest observations, had almost the same experience a while ago; But the locals are amazing. We made very good friends and memories. Passed the baloons and horses 😂. A must see place , magical! Thanks for the advices 🙏👍

Nice video! I agree with most of the points, except that Cappadocia has no public transport at all. It has. For example, you can get from Göreme to Kaymaklı cave city by public transport. Although you need to change a bus in Nevşehir, it's not hard to find stops, buses run every half an hour and it's not a long distance. It costs 66 lira per person (round trip). For comparison, in a taxi, the same route would cost 1200-1500 lire. As for renting a car, In my opinion, it is comfortable, but troublesome, gasoline is expensive, and there is a risk of damaging the car. We visited all the valleys by foot, sometimes returning to Göreme by taxi for 100-150 liras to save time and not go down the dusty road. As for ballons it's a big big lottery. If you're lucky you will get a life changing expirience. If you're not your balloon can hang in one place, unsuccessfully trying to gain altitude, and then quickly complete the flight.
