unless you live in NSW and QLD (roughly half the country's population) who could give two shits about it while they're watching Rugby League and cricket
Australian Rules Football has been around and popular since the 1860's. So yeah its not a new sport by any means. We currently have an American player Mason Cox playing for the Collingwood Football Club. Might be worth reacting to his video as it gives an American perspective of the sport. From US college basketballer to AFL star | Don't Believe In Never: Mason Cox | AFL
Need to check out the AFL Grand Final 2018 Match Highlights, West Coast vs Collingwood and was an unbelievable game. Would be perfect for your first to watch.
Suggested viewing is Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti video's. At 5' 8" he's the second shortest man in the AFL, but his skills are just mad. The 2017 Walla highlights real gives some of the best run-down tackles and brilliant goals you'll ever see.
The AFL/VFL (name change from Victorian, state based to Australian, national comp in 1990) has been around since 1897. Before that was the VFA, since 1877, and before that as an ad-hoc game since 1859. There has been a deciding match played since 1898. That's 121 premiership matches, or "superbowl" style playoffs. So, yeah, it's still around, and will be for a very long time to come.
It's a men's sport, anyone who isn't Australian doesn't quite understand what that means. If you watch afl your whole life, watching other sports is just sad.
The AFL was basically an expansion of the commercially successful VFL which was formed in 1896. This predates the NFL by quite a few years, 1920. It has been more than popular for several decades and there is no sign of a major decline in supporters. I know a guy in my home town who is 97, and his family were one of the first settlers. They played footy here in the 1860's, and it was a huge attraction even then. Of coarse the club is still going strong.
You could also react to the weekly match highlights from the AFL's TH-cam channel, some of the matches last week were pretty gripping, particularly the North Melbourne VS Essendon game.
Ha ha ha “is this still popular in Australia?” It’s been popular for longer than any codified sport in the world. That question is like asking - oh this NBA video is from three years ago. Is that still popular?
Australian rules has been around for roughly 150 years and played professionally or at least semi professionally for around 100 years. Given Australia wasn't officially a nation until 1901, that shows how popular it is..
It has been going for over 100 years and is very popular. It is non stop, they are try and stop any delay getting the ball to the centre after a goal kick. It is built on speed.
Still popular. The game has been played since the mid 1800s and the Australian football league has been running since 1897. It was originally VFL changed to AFL in 1990 (?)
Mate the AFL is still extremely popular for us. But There has been alot of issues in the game this year like Fans Booing when unhappy with certain players or umpiring decisions, Heaps of Umpire Abuse from fans, Rule changes which has fans basically calling for the heads of the CEO and Guy who makes the rules! Lol
Here's the Aussie rules positions: Backs: Left Back Pocket Full Back. Right Back Pocket Half Backs: Left Half Back. Centre Half Back. Right Half Back Centres: Left Wing. Centre outside Midfield. Right Wing Ruck/Rover:Inside mid (Rover 1) Ruckman (jump-baller in US) Inside mid (Rover 2) Half Forwards: Left Half Forward Centre Half Forward. Right Half Forward Forwards: Left Forward Pocket. Full Forward. Right Half Forward Interchange: 4 Players usually consist of two mids, one forward, one back or multi-positional players called utilities who are versatile at both ends of the ground Side note: A ruckman (usually your tallest player) can also be an extra defender or forward if required for their extra height advantage
The AFL is only 35 years old (formed in 1985/1986) but before that there was the individual states competition Ike the WAFL, VFL, SAFL and of course the state of origin match held every year until the forming of the AFL Western Australia(WAFL) verses Victoria (VFL). The game is over 150 years old, older than the NFL. It’s got a great origin history of how it was formed a mixture of rugby and an ancient aboriginal ball game called Marn Grook and a few added rules. Originally played to keep cricket players fit in the off season which is why Footy is played on a cricket field.
As of Sept 2019, it’s still a very popular sport across Australia. This time of year (late Aug to late Sept) is finals season, so the competition is heating up!
The game is still the most popular sport in Australia. Many of the teams have existed since the 1850’s and 60’s. It’s very tribal amongst its fans and the rivalries are as fierce as any in the world. 100,000 people turned up to the grand final this year and the annual tv viewing audience was almost 90 million in terms of views. Attendance rates for games in 2019 was nearly 6.9 million, which for a country of roughly 25 million represents almost 28% of the population. Fair to say it’s popular.
Aussie Rules was first played as far back as the 1880's. Eventually, every state or territory other than Queensland and New South Wales established their own competitions; and would play interstate matches. Around the late 1980's, the Victorian Football League expanded to form the current Australian Football League, with teams in each state except Tasmania and the Northern Territory. The current 2023 season will commence shortly.
The score at 5.45 is Collingwood 20 goals (20x6 points = 120 points) 10 behinds (=10 points) - total score 120+10 = 130 points. Carlton 18 goals (18x6 points= 108 points) 12 behinds (=12 points) - total score 108+12 = 120 points. So if Carlton had kicked more accurately so three of its behinds had been goals instead, they would have had 21 goals, 9 behinds = 135 points - and would have won the game.
Aussies Rules has been around since 1858 and is therefore one of the oldest football codes in the world. It has always been popular and remains so, especially in the “traditional” Aussie Rules states (Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and (not actually a state) the Northern Territory and less so in New South Wales, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, where Rugby League is popular. I don’t know why they say the Grand Final has an attendance of 90,000; it is always around 100,000 (and was 121,696 in 1970, a time when people were packed in with lots of standing areas.
I recommend watching Western Bulldogs 2016 journey. They were given no hope yet they did the impossible and were the first team to win a flag from outside the top 4 (disregarding Adelaide because top 8 system was different back in 1997)
A top NFL team came and saw a game and wanted to have a go.... they got COMPLETELY wiped out when they found that they had to run about 9-10 miles PER GAME without rests and the only protection is a cup and mouth guard. Oh and they didn't play the actual team,. they played against the reserves.. you know the back up players!
The on field play is brutal but in the stands and around the ground it’s perfectly safe for families and children. The championship cup is called the “holy grail” and AFL is lovingly referred to as our religion. Minimum age to play is 9. We have both men’s and women’s AFL competitions. Go check out the girl playing :)
AFL was, is, and will be massive, it's just a huge sport, also the MCG (the stadium AFL grand final is played at) is the 10th biggest stadium... (pause for effect) in the world.
You should check out the specks on Australia , the AFL started back in the late 1850s , it was known as the Victoria football association , some where round the start of the 1900s it split into the Victorian football league then in the late 1980s or early 1990s it officially went Australian wide , the size of Australia is roughly the same size as North American but only has 25 million people , the state of Victoria is larger than England which has about 250 million people . In the old days the packets of cigarettes where soft so they put cardboard in the back of the packets to help stop the cigarettes from being squashed , at some point in the late 1800s they started putting pictures on the cardboard , the oldest football cards I have for my club The Bulldogs the mighty red ,white and blue go back to 1905 , so I think this should be enough information to get you started . Any questions I’m on Facebook ,
When reacting to videos ....Just turn the volume up slightly so we can hear it as well .....But also when talking .....Remember to pause the video if u have any questions u want to ask about it 🙂🙂 Check out about Mason Cox .....Our big tall American who plays for Collingwood ......Right now we are getting very close to our Finals games as its getting towards the seasons end 🙂🙂😉
Australian Rules Football has been an uninterrupted ongoing competition since it was first codified in 1858. It's the world's oldest codified competition. And yes, Aussie Rules Football is still very popular and always will be. It's a great spectacle. The people love it.
It was first played in 1858, it is just as popular today as it’s ever been. Now in 2020 it’s even being played without spectators because of the COVID-19 restrictions. Aussie rules isn’t just a sport in Australia, it is an absolute religion.
It's older than American Football I think ..Very old game...and hugely popular ..There is an American , Mason Cox who plays for the Collingwood Magpies ..He's the first American to really make it as a player..
Older than any other modern football code in terms of established rules. Rugby had a set of rules beforehand but they changed it up after Australian football set theirs.
AFL is always rising in popularity in australia, memberships never higher and viewing was at its highest of all time. fair to make a point that the game itself is 123 years old
Did he honestly say is this still popular in Australia it's been around for over 100 years and will be around for ever we love it as much as you guys love NFL or what ever it's called no clue we probably love our it more
Biggest sport in the country, played in every school, preschool, after school, and minor leagues such as the VFL (Victoria), Womens AFL. That Video is kind of accurate but misses many rules. Also the scoring system is Goals|Points|total Points aka 13|8|86
I’ve seen this explanation a few times now and what annoys me as an Australian watching other people learn about this game is a fact that the narrator doesn’t explain the scores properly. "Similiar to a punt in NFL". AFL players make the best punters and America now scouts in Australia for their punters like Michael Dickson Seattle Seahawks.
Is it still popular in Australia? I believe it predates nfl by quite some bit. Expect 100000 at this year's grand final. Is it still popular, unbelievable.
Kind of odd to ask if Aussie Rules, given it has the 4th highest domestic attendance in the world, is still popular 4 years after this video. The game has been around since 1858, over 160 years. No, it’s not losing its popularity. Not while clubs are getting upwards of 100,000 members.

AFL isn’t a matter of life and death, it’s much more important than that...
Best sport in the world.
AFL is the oldest professional football league in the world
Stuff the Tigers
Go The Eagles 😁😁
AFL is and will probably always be the biggest sport on Australia. You should react to AFL hardest hits, AFL top 50 marks and AFL top 50 goals
unless you live in NSW and QLD (roughly half the country's population) who could give two shits about it while they're watching Rugby League and cricket
shmickpingo1 that’s why gws fans have no clue what footy is
Abdulkalik Kedir i agree
Australia's best kept secret is the AFL. Its more popular now that ever before and doesn't seem to be slowing down.

From US college basketballer to AFL star | Don't Believe In Never: Mason Cox | AFL
AFL had to be the best sport in the world hands down, tremendous skill envolved with tremendous athletes
Footy has been beloved since the late 1800’s, and it certainly isn’t on the way down now 😉
@Michael Rogers Yep, with SA being the first and oldest football league still going.
@Michael Rogers It was first codified in 1858, when the competition began.
Need to check out the AFL Grand Final 2018 Match Highlights, West Coast vs Collingwood and was an unbelievable game. Would be perfect for your first to watch.
Was a great game but “89” will always be superior
AFL embodies the best of Australia. We play hard and party hard. God Bless Australia.
AFLs been played for over 100 years so its fairly popular as our national sport.
Australian Football has yes. AFL is just the name of the league.
AFL is the oldest football code in the world. Invented around 1860 with the intent of keeping cricketers fit during winter.
Suggested viewing is Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti video's. At 5' 8" he's the second shortest man in the AFL, but his skills are just mad. The 2017 Walla highlights real gives some of the best run-down tackles and brilliant goals you'll ever see.

Don't forget it's not an entirely Victorian only game , Western Australia and South Australia are big contributers to the game of AFL
The oldest league for any football code in the world is the SANFL and it's still going. 1877, before the VFA was established.
This is huge, it's been going since 1850s. Even got an American playing for Collingwood Magpies!
AFL is doing just as well. Has been doing that well for 80 years. The sport itself is over 150 years old.
It's a men's sport, anyone who isn't Australian doesn't quite understand what that means. If you watch afl your whole life, watching other sports is just sad.

Only in Victoria though.

It's Australia's most popular sport. It has been around since the mid 1800's, and will still be around in another 150 years.
It is our major sport and can’t wait for new season I support the Adelaide crows and at the moment are just waiting to see who we draft in

Yeah mate, Aussie Rules is well entrenched in Australia, it's by far the most popular sport, and has been for over 100 years.
Afl has been going for over a century. Its massive. And awesome.
The sport is growing. All states play it, most popular around the south to the south west then the west north. North east have rugby.
It was first played in 1858, it is just as popular today as it’s ever been. Now in 2020 it’s even being played without spectators because of the COVID-19 restrictions. Aussie rules isn’t just a sport in Australia, it is an absolute religion.

Even more popular now then before with I think four teams over 100 thousand members
Omg, you’re on a sports reactions channel and never heard of AFL. I guess that is typical of Americans not looking outside their own bubble.
Very insular Americans are!
Yeah too bloody right, Americans are so conceded they don't think there's any other sport in the world other than theirs typical..
This gotta be the most violent sport on the grass.. Much respect to Australia from Europe, Portugal!!!
Only getting better and more popular, Our best kept secret :)

I’ve seen this explanation a few times now and what annoys me as an Australian watching other people learn about this game is a fact that the narrator doesn’t explain the scores properly. He could’ve elaborated on that part & said, “the scores can look like something like this-Goals plus behinds equals the total score”. I know most people figure it out anyway but I can see most people are still confuse trying to figure out the score.
AFL is great cool vid👍 West coast eagles rule!!!

Invented in Melbourne in the late 1850s and codified in 1859, Australian Rules is the oldest code of football in the world.
It is getting bigger with new teams maybe added in the next few years
Richmond has over 100,000 members so it has grown since then
"Similiar to a punt in NFL". AFL players make the best punters and America now scouts in Australia for their punters like Michael Dickson Seattle Seahawks.
Is it still popular in Australia? I believe it predates nfl by quite some bit. Expect 100000 at this year's grand final. Is it still popular, unbelievable.
