I just love this movie and how it depicts isolation, insecurity, loneliness. Mahershala when he won his Oscar for this said something in the lines that when we don’t love and support those that are different people will collapse into themselves and with draw and not reach their potential. It was just a beautiful sentiment

I was actually watching the Oscars the year that they mistakenly read La La Land as Best Picture. I was over the moon for Barry Jenkins--you could see the utter shock and joy on his face when they corrected the mistake and named Moonlight. Master filmmaker. He knows what cinema can do. This film is so beautiful.
@@FrankFreezy_ I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but something about it never sat right with me. I hated that their moment got taken from them, and I feel like the incident itself overshadowed the movie's win.
That was one of the best moments of my college experience. I was the only one who had heard of this movie much less rooting for it in a house full of white girls. When they announced it was a mistake I actually screamed. I was so proud
im an aunt who's queer and im coparenting a niece who's currently 6. its so difficult but Ive found the most important thing is to speak to kids like they're human and not babies, and to teach consent early. also the correct names of body parts and how all humans are different. she's 6 and will call me out when I say men/women are hot - she says "you have to ask permission" its amazing how that concept is so engrained in her at 6. I never had that and my consent was violated so many times as a child and young person and I wanna keep her from that if I can by giving her a voice and the vocabulary to tell the adults in her life she trusts exactly what's happening. that's my biggest piece of advice for ppl raising kids.
Just from watching this reaction, I can confidently say your future partner and kids are going to be so lucky to have you. We need more men like you in the world, especially in our community ❤
The level of brilliance this movie has is mind blowing. The accurate portrayal of all the different layers of humanity in all its intricacies and tragedy, the writing, the shots framed and the single takes, it leaves you speechless. I have lived in these communities and seen what my friend’s children went through, and felt the complicity of standing by. And the realities of being Black, queer, and without a father, with a single mother with her own struggles, and the people that want to do good but are facing their part in the problem, what masterful storytelling. An exquisite movie.
I am so happy that you watched that beautiful and important film. I always wanted to ask you if you might do it but I was not sure. I am happy to watch it with you again now 😊
Im not POC myself, but im a trans woman, the relationship Chiron has with his mother is probably the most accurate experience to growing up around a drug addict parent, one who wants to love, but cant and is unable to at that time. The confusion and general anger towards the child, and inability to properly care. The scene with them meeting in the sobriety facility was very similar to my experience and im unable to watch that scene without breaking down due to the fact that me and my mother had a very similar conversation, her apologizing for previous actions she had done and it took me years to fully heal and be able to look at my mother with anything other than contempt and anger. Their relationship feels more realistic to what it often is for children in those house holds, the confusing emotions of not knowing wether to keep loving your parent, or just generally hate them and hold onto that resentment, while also knowing that they are providing your roof you live under. Probably one of the best films A24 did due to the fact that there really arent any other films which go into these topics with this level of empathy, and understanding without it coming off as exploitative or exaggerated for the purpose of film.
I love the depth of your reactions on all your videos I've watched so far. I saw Moonlight when it was released and loved everything about it. When it was nominated for an Oscar I felt it was deserved but never thought it would win. I think it won six out seven awards including screenplay, Ali's and best picture.
@56:13 this was me too!! That diner scene had me grinning from ear to ear the whole time. I could watch a whole movie with just the oldest 2 actors. The way you could feel every emotion without them saying anything just BRAVO! Also, the fact that the director didn't let any of the Chirons meet each other is a testament to his talent.
Love that Black became a mirror image of Blue when he became grown. So many times we becoming the best and worst of our mentors. That tagline of in Moonlight Black boys look blue makes so much more sense in context of the visual storytelling. I don’t use the word masterpiece often but this movies has it all.

When I saw that you’d reviewed this, I finally got around to watching it myself. Then I came back here to see what you had to say. What you described of your own experiences was deeply moving. And what you said about having your own kids was inspiring. The weight parents carry - to break negative intergenerational patterns - it’s such a huge responsibility. Your ambition to accept your children for whoever they are, to let them feel safe discovering themselves regardless, and to try to accomplish that within this grotesquely unjust system so eager to punish people, to assign status, to dismiss and denigrate…it’s such a Sisyphean burden. I just hope you can remember that despite feeling like it’s all in your hands, there’s only so much anyone can do. In the long run, none of us can save the ones we love. Gotta love a movie that starts people thinking about what really matters. Moonlight was amazing, and this was your best video yet. Fantastic work.
Happy Saturday, Hard but beautiful film. Its heartbreaking that so many have to struggle and survive trauma just to identify with who they r. The false sense of privilege in the world and what so many believe masculinity should be, brings judgement and hate, violence that stems from fear of what they dont understand. I had a very abusive alcoholic father in every way, was emancipated from my family at age 15 (in the late 70s) when I married a 28yr old who was also abusive. I finally broke the cycle when I had my sons. I realized that what lies behind us and what lies in front of us, pales in comparison to what lies inside of us. The simple act of listening to someone and making them feel as if they have truly been heard is a most treasured gift that could change the world. Thanx so much, be well, Peace

I feel bad for folks that get hung up on this movie just because it is based around a gay relationship because it is just a love story. That scene at the end where you get to see Chiron with his shields down receiving love for the first time in like a decade gets me choked up every time. In order to protect himself from the cruelty of his environment he locked his heart away and that destroys your soul. I like that he showed vulnerability and Kevin embraced him. It wasn't about some tantalizing sexual thing it was just contact, just love. They didn't play it angry or fall into any easy story tropes.
