The Chevy Colorado makes a great Truck Bed Camping rig - 6ft bed for comfort - compact for the trail

  • Here's a walk thru of my new extended cab Chevy ZR2 truck bed camper build. when my nissan died I needed a truck that was road trip and off road capable. Living in Arkansas nearly all of my trips start with hours on pavement before hitting the trails...which is why I went with the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison. The build is very similar to the one I made for my Nissan Titan but with more storage under the sleeping platform. I kept many of the same features from my old build because it performed well in off road environments. The extended cab Chevy ZR2 has a 74 inch bed which has been really nice. I'm on my second year of truck bed camping and have 4 weeks on the road in this new rig. Not only is the ZR2 a capable off road vehicle...it's a nice ride on the highway too! Looking forward to road tripping all over the US this year! The only thing I might build is dedicated storage along the passenger wheel well but I'm not sold on that yet. Thanks for watching.

    Very well thought out set up Drew. You can tell a lot of experience, (and off road miles), went in to getting this all right for you. Thanks for the info. Makes me want to try this on my wife's Subaru!

    Nice set up Drew. I made a front window screen, copied Crazyquady. Cut screen to size, used gorilla tape to make frame and velcro to hold in. I like to remove it so I can stick my rods through. I stuff a pool noodle in between cab and shell to protect. rods. On my last truck I swore to myself to get a taller shell. I told myself to get over the the stream line look of the cab high shell and get a raised top. I don't want an awning off the side. I run one off the back like you do. I have a easy popup sun shade tent to store, fire wood, and keep my cooler out of the direct sun and heat of my truck. I also set up a self standing awning, hang a couple wall side tarps as a wind break and set up my kitchen under that. That way I don't have to pack everything back up to road trip a couple miles down the river from camp. I can set a chair, couple tables and kitchen under that and stay out of the sun and rain. Cheers

    Drew - luv the videos. Here’s a link to a back seat storage DIY system that I put in my Tundra. Took the back seat out (took 15 minutes) and replaced it with a system that I found on Fine Homebuilding. Tried to paste the link but YT doesn’t like that. Google “fine homebuilding tool storage extra cab pickup”. Best thing ever! Also comes out in 15 minutes - held in by gravity. Since I put it in 10 years ago, I’ve only missed my rear seat when I’m ferrying back and forth from take outs to put ins and have a couple of buddies - one draws the short straw for a ride in the back. Turns out to be a great place for wet hunting dogs as well - built in kennel.

    Great to see the new rig. I know we chatted a long while back about Colorados when you were setting up the old rig. I got my 2016 extended cab new and it's still going strong. Im doing one of those half cargo topper thules on my rack and just having that place to throw my trash, wet boots, even a few pieces of wood, or whatever I want out of the way kind of makes a nice garage area. You'd probably still be able to do the kayak up top and rod tubes with either a half basket or cargo topper. Ive got the thule, and I can run a half basket and awning all at once.

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see how that would be helpful. I'd still like a basket especially for storing extra fuel and water!

    Nice set up!
    For saws, I recommend silky saws. Can’t go wrong with those. A little pricey, but work just as good as a chain saw and can cut like through 10+ inch logs like a hot knife through butter.
    If u come across a fallen tree blocking the road, a large silky saw is the way to go. Don’t have to carry a chain saw. Good safety measure to have on board when navigating backcountry of Idaho

    Nice set up! Beautiful area! N. Ga is home base, totes are great for keeping Stuff dry when the morning dampness is thick . I can access my fire extinguisher as quickly as my personal protection. (Well, almost. I don't carry a fire extinguisher on me..😁. )
    Liking the fishing? Little more juice coming up the line?
    I have to renew registration and that requires emissions...in Ga. So I guess next is fishing up the east side with my yak!
    Tight Lines and clear cold water!

    Hey drew awesome video man!! Love to see ideas for a setup. Noticed the zr2 bison truck… I’ve been looking to buy a great off road truck! How has it treated you? Has it been reliable and gotten the job done or would you reccomend something else?

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I absolutely love it. Haven't done much off roading yet but the ride, especially on forest svc roads and road tripping (8k miles in 2 months already) is super comfortable. One of the reviews I saw on TH-cam was that is was a well mannered daily driver with enough attitude to be a serious off road machine when needed. I think that's a perfect description!

  • @KellyH6312
    @KellyH6312 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done. Love your videos. I just got a Chevy Colorado and love it! I’m in Missoula, MT. Fly fishing heaven! Question:
    How do you keep dust out of the truck bed/topper when driving the dusty dirty back roads?? One of my favorite places requires 50 miles of backroads.

    • @LooknFishy
      @LooknFishy  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few bed seal options. I used truck seal x but results aren't great. I still get some dust but not enough to not be liveable. Spent 9 weeks this summer on dusty roads out west and it wasn't terrible!

    • @KellyH6312
      @KellyH6312 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LooknFishy thanks!! I’m looking for better options, but if you say there’s only a little dust, you might have the best available. I had to resort to packing EVERYTHING in plastic tubs, wipe out the truck bed with a towel, and reset every time I moved elsewhere. I’ll start with a gasket and go from there.
      Thank you!

    • @LooknFishy

      It's a thule...so also the expensive type. I don't know of any cheap ones, especially if your topper is warranties. Mine is so I went with the same brand as the tracks
