But Jerry was right when he said he hasn't heard anyone like Layne since . The power and fullness of his voice was on another level .
Layne is my all time favorite vocalist and it can be easy to get picky about covers but then i realize he's my favorite vocalist for a reason. Layne's range on paper is about the same as Corey's but Layne put so much more than natural talent into his songs. To understand why 90s grunge singers are so amazing you have to look at their coaching. The vocal coach that taught people like Layne, Chris cornell and many other legends from that era, focused on spiritual coaching and really digging down deep inside to grab every ounce of emotion that you have so when you open up on high notes it sounds genuine and natural. Corey isn't really struggling with the notes here, he's struggling with the tones that Layne refined specifically for his style. A lot of Layne's power and tone comes from his specific resonance techniques and if you don't use his techniques (no vocalist that has already made their name would) you will never match his power and clarity on the top end of his range. Alice in chains wrote their music around Layne's voice and to even sound decent covering one of their songs, you have to match his tone. But his tone was a mixture of spiritual coaching (confidence), raw emotion and technique that just can't be matched by someone who sings with different meaning and circumstances. Also, let's not forget that nobody is going to be as relaxed as a career heroin addict that was almost always high on stage (just being honest). R.I.P. Layne.

@@kwantoon He really is. He gets a lot of attention for his look and vibe but it’s his guitar playing that really makes Dave Navarro who he is. He makes it look effortless.
Great cover!!! Dave surprised me with how well he nailed Jerry’s sound. And Cory can handle Layne’s vocals, despite what the negative comments say. And so good to see Taylor on drums. He’s rocking with Layne up there as we speak.
Right?!?! Dave surprised me..and the fact Corey did as well as he did singing Layne's part. Despite how insanely difficult he is to even attempt to copy..Dude did a decent job. I will adore Layne till the day I die, I would be the most critical of someone else singing his stuff..but I approve. Only other person I've seen so a good job was Upchurch singing Nutshell.
At least he's hitting the notes, although that could be pitch correction on his recording. But, yes his voice is much deeper than Layne's. I'm sure Layne would struggle to sing a slipknot song like Corey.
You’re right. There is actually pretty significant vocal tuning on Corey’s voice. It’s set to the key of the song, so it’s really helping his voice not sound like absolute dog shit in this. I guarantee you all those high notes were at least 20 cents flat before the live vocal tuning. The chorus, delay, and reverb also helped hide the blemishes better.
Lane was something special. If you have a really great pair of headphones you can v feel the vibrations of his voice, it’s like his whole body was involved. I’m not sure how to explain it. But he’s a man that will never be replaced. Tributes are beautiful non the less.

This is so cool just to see as a rock fan. fuck a comparison to Layne. they’re all amazing in their respected lanes so to see them perform this great together is just awesome
Dave Navarros rendition of that guitar solo is amazing; adds his own personal style flare and the tone he compiled for the song just make it sound even better; and of course Corey Taylor doing his damn best to reach those emotive and passionate Layne tones and notes. Lastly, of course Taylor Hawkins killing it with his special fills and Chaney’s thick and muffled bass lines are the icing on top. Great cover, I just wish Corey could hit those high notes like Layne did.
I don't know what the great fuss is about in the comments because it takes balls and huge confidence in capabilities to not add grit to this chorus. Corey nailed it while being totally original here.
For me it’s more so his annoying annunciation and vowel placement. Layne plays with his vowels and leaves them open so in stead of “Feeeed my eyes” it sounds more like “faaade my eyes” Layne doesn’t hit a hard “e” sound, where as corey hit a very hard “e” sound and leave it very closed. Leading it to sound, well, not good. Not to mention is sounds as if he’s pushing close to the top of his range. Also the weird reverb on the vocals is not favored by me personally. I love corey as a vocalist but this was just not a great performance by him in my opinion and he did not do the song any justice. Not that many people can.
What? Confidence doesn't make it a good cover. Changing it too much becomes something else. I suck at basketball so maybe if we change it to football, I'll be better.
Navarro's and Taylor's performances were note for note - 10/10. Taylor Hawkins was almost too good/busy, with more fills and flash than the original. Chris Chaney was great. No-one has ever roared like Staley and no-one every will again.
@@gditeorcrish464 When they did When Doves Cry? Yeah as a Metallica fan, I will never speak about that ever again, the weird sound coming from Kirks guitar and Robs stomach was not that good. Great musicians, bad cover

It takes a lot of bravery to cover this song. To this day NO ONE can bring in like Layne. But, that's what makes Layne the legend he is. I can only imagine how amazing he'd be today if he could've gotten clean. He was simply too good for this cruel world.
Just some side love for Dave Navarro. He’s such a wonderfully gifted guitar player with beautiful tone.
Dave is criminally under rated
Some extra side love added in ❤️
Yep. He seemed a bit low in the mix though. Everyone did compared to Corey. The OG version seems to have more bite to the guitars
@@kwantoon He really is. He gets a lot of attention for his look and vibe but it’s his guitar playing that really makes Dave Navarro who he is.
He makes it look effortless.
@The Lord of Entropy Same here. I was lucky to see The Nothing’s Shocking tour twice and man those were some crazy ass fun shows.
Great cover!!! Dave surprised me with how well he nailed Jerry’s sound. And Cory can handle Layne’s vocals, despite what the negative comments say. And so good to see Taylor on drums. He’s rocking with Layne up there as we speak.
Agreed. Anyone who has the balls to cover layne gets my respect.saw them in 94. Fucking awesome!
not even close to handling laynes vocals shut up
@Slottz 404 Layne's voice could go really low if he wanted too so i guess he could've sung any spliknot song without any problems.
@@VontiOfficial lmao its literally a vocal effect that on the og song no auto tuning why you hate ING on a great cover your pathetic
@@TheStepmonkey no
You could FEEL Layne. This was an awesome take, and sad considering who’s all gone and who’s all here but hurting. Magnificent talent.
Lane was something special. If you have a really great pair of headphones you can v feel the vibrations of his voice, it’s like his whole body was involved. I’m not sure how to explain it. But he’s a man that will never be replaced. Tributes are beautiful non the less.
There will never be another Stanley but these guys did a good tribute. Much respect
Staley…Layne Staley…not Stanley
@@ericfryar6241 lol damn, my bad. I must have been smoked up that day! Thanks for the correction 🙃
There might be another Stanley , but there wont be another Staley 😉
@@karenmorton8657 lol well said
Solid performance. RIP Lane & Taylor.
I love that people can't just listen to this for what it is,without picking apart the musicians way of doing it.
Defeats the purpose of music.
Man, just got this suggestion out of nowhere and what a kick ass performance...Rock In Peace Taylor and Layne.
I'm 40 now, I just can´t get enough of this song. I'm so happy Alice in chains happened in my time as a teenager. Corey rocks but damn!! Layne was so authentic and truly a rock god.
RIP Layne Stanley, Mick Starr and Taylor Hawkins.
Dave literally always looks cool, and he killed that fuckin solo
Literally?
Like he looks blue and shivering? That’s literally cool.
@@eidorian101 you okay?
@@dgrass5846 no, he's right. You're another one of these idiots who throws the word "literally" around without using it correctly. Trying to sound smart when in fact all you've done is the opposite.
Awww Taylor so heartbroken 💔 over his passing. Layne ‘s voice was killer can’t compare. But Corey voice is great as well ❤✌🏼😎
The fact that Corey even got close on such a well produced shoot says everything. Layne was truly one of a kind, and only someone with as much raw talent and gumption could even try this in such a reverent fashion. Bravo.
What's your definition of close lol?
Even Cory couldn’t match his amazing voice R.I.P Layne Stanley ❤️
What a supergroup these guys would be, love to see them play some more songs or put an album out together!
Right? But how would Corey have the time?😜❤✌
@@CornvilleConsigliere87 Ah well... Corey somehow always findes the time :)
...
Well shit
Goddamit man life's just like that, RIP Taylor:(
This is so cool just to see as a rock fan. fuck a comparison to Layne. they’re all amazing in their respected lanes so to see them perform this great together is just awesome
Will always be laynes song, but Corey did really an amazing job here. Both powerhouse singers in their own right.
Nailed it? What in the fuck
What? Confidence doesn't make it a good cover. Changing it too much becomes something else. I suck at basketball so maybe if we change it to football, I'll be better.
Exactly are we expecting him to sound like the original is just dumb
@@misterdoctorguy different styles perfection is not required
Not sure what everyone in the comments is on about. They did amazing
Not sure what you are on about what everyone in the comments is on about.
They said they did amazing.
this video should not be seen as tribute, but a disrespect to Layne come on man
@@automachinehead your pathetic
Man when I saw this when it aired I thought Dave misplayed the solo a tiny bit but he actually killed it!
RIP Taylor. You nailed it my friend.
Layne’s voice was incredible, it was impossible to sing it over. I respect the guys for the memory of him.❤
Dave absolutely kills that solo!
Holy shit how did I not know this existed, this is one of my fav songs. And Corey is a killer I love his sound.
Navarro's and Taylor's performances were note for note - 10/10. Taylor Hawkins was almost too good/busy, with more fills and flash than the original. Chris Chaney was great. No-one has ever roared like Staley and no-one every will again.
All these legends just makes me think how much better the original was.
I need more of these casual supergroups jamming and covering, is just lovely.
These guys have great chemistry
No one can sing like layne but I must say it’s an kickass cover with some improvisation ॥
Hey at least it's better than that god awful cover of would that Metallica did
@@gditeorcrish464 When they did When Doves Cry? Yeah as a Metallica fan, I will never speak about that ever again, the weird sound coming from Kirks guitar and Robs stomach was not that good. Great musicians, bad cover
this video should not be seen as tribute, but a disrespect to Layne come on man
Layne is often replicated never duplicated!!! Love seeing all these faces on this cover!!!
Even Corey (who is an insane vocalist) can only come close to matching Laynes shows just how incredible and one of a kind Laynes vocals were
I love Corey and all of his covers. He's got terrific vocals and can nail most of the songs out there. Here, though, on the chorus he sounds like his got a lisp. Tough song to cover from every aspect. AIC with Layne was a force to be reckoned with. Still feel sad when I think about how Layne ended up. I listen to their stuff still to this day and don't feel that time has run over them. Even my kids love them - "Dad, show me Layne when he was healthy and then when he was sad." Makes me wanna cry every fucking time.
Dave is a hell of a guitar player but yikes those backups are lacking 🤦♂️ lmao
Almost thought Fieldy was ripping guitar then I realized it was Dave Navarro. Killed it tho
Always loved Corey Taylor and Taylor Hawkins as well. Never a huge Navarro fan but they ALL kill ot here. Much respect!
I've attempted to cover thus song with a band. It takes someone like Corey with the stamina of a professional rock vocalist to pull it off. Layne was touched by the gods to belt like he does. Best cover I've heard of this song. Congrats guys on pulling this off with dignity.
@first name it's a figure of speech. No need to get all bent out of shape my friend. I'm fairly certain that I could run circles around you on the topic of comparative theology so let's just not go there my dude.
@@kevinpeter5566 right on
I don’t usually like covers but this one is great! Taylor Hawkins is such a beast on drums!!!! Loving it guys!❤
I think it’s freaking awesome that so many musicians from the era of grunge and beyond, credit AIC as their biggest influence as evidenced here! RIP Taylor ❤️🎸🤘🙏
Yeah....... A Layne Staley just one time in life.. Corey is amazing vocal, but Layne.... no words to describe. This music, in both voice, shows and prove my opinion.
I love Corey but the vocal here is over produced and synthetic sounding. Layne was truly unique and raw. That said I admire these guys for paying tribute. Kudos. ❤️
It's insanely hard to do what Layne did, though. That's why he is and always will be a legend. And fuck heroin.
Taylor with Layne in the background brought tears to my eyes!😔
Why am I only seeing/hearing this now in 2023?
RIP Mr. STALEY, and Mr. Hawkins.
Fuck this is a great rendition. Props to all.
But Stayley was a fucking powerhouse.
Corey Taylor is my freaking crush from the time I was 16 when Wait and bleed came out to forever. I will always be a MAGGOT!!!!!!!!
This just shows how insanely talented Lane was. Nobody can sing like him.🤘
This is the comment I was looking for!
Thank YOU for being there and doing this performance for us, believe it or not it means a lot.
Layne was so fucking good dude, one unique voice for sure still to this day
Awesome... I'm not a fan of remakes but when it comes to one of the greatest songs ever i don't mind a legit talent redo with their own subtle twist... well done.
I think he nailed this!
Oh Taylor…. God. You’re a beast. RIP ❤️
always been a fan of all these bands, love they all came together for this. Rip Taylor
Dude that knock in the beginning scared the shit out of me, im ready for this shit with both earbuds in, no ones home, im ready to sing my heart out and i heard the knock…
This song is hard as hell to sing, Layne was one of a kind. Corey is an awesome vocalist so this shows you just how talented Layne was, RIP!
Still great stuff ...all these dudes playing together ....
Damn, Corey sounds incredible.👍👍
I gotta say Corey did a bloody awesome job of this song ! 💞🤟🏻💞
Agreed... being from Iowa and loving Corey Taylor but even if we weren't from Des Moines Iowa I'd still have nothing but respect for him... he has a powerful voice and personality. Awesome dude
Dave Navarro is an effin beast on the guitar. He was ahead of his time with Jane's Addiction in the late 80s to early 90s.
No one can sing like Layne, but fuck Corey got close! Very impressed!
I love Corey Taylor but there is too much autotune or something on his voice and his natural vocal breakup isn’t cutting through on the chorus.
Yeah agreed. This sounds autotuned out the ass
They put some chorus or a flanger. If you listen to the album there is a tiny bit on the vocals. My guess is that it wasn’t as noticeable in the room and a bit more of it went to tape then probably should have.
So many legends in one session 🔥🔥🔥 #legend
R.I.P TAYLOR HAWKINS😢
This is exactly how i will be playing the drums on this song!! Taylor absolutely NAILED IT!!! Still can't believe he's gone.... 😢 Chester Bennington, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Cornell, Tom Petty..... I will forever play their music!! They will live on through their art they blessed us all with. RIP Legends...
Not sure how I missed this. So close to the original. RIP Taylor. Great cover with the most badass rockers still walking the face of this earth.
Wow. I’m blown away. This is really good.
Wow. Corey nailed it perfectly!!! Awesome pipes!
Always cool to see how Corey nails old school classics
I just saw Alice in Chains and clicked without rthe eading rest of the title.
Suddenly seeing Taylor Hawkins almost made me cry.
