Best way to clean Mexican clay tiles is what this DIY howto video is about. VideoJoe is over at a friend's house & they need to have more of their Mexican clay tiles cleaned in their kitchen so of course he's up to the task! Is he a professional cleaner? Ha! No but that won't stop him from getting these Mexican clay tiles as clean as they can get even the grout lines too & the kicker? These Mexican clay tiles have not been cleaned for over 25 years. He had to laugh too because when the owner said at least 25 years he really knows that means a lot more. It's not going to cost that much either for cleaning these Mexican clay tiles & you really need to clean them good if you are planning on re-sealing the floor after wards. Cleaning Mexican clay tile floors is a back breaker for sure but just take your project in mini steps just looking at & concentrating at the few tiles right in front of you before moving on or before looking at how large the kitchen is or that there's more Mexican clay tiles in the adjoining dining room or down the hall or in the bathroom or in the laundry room...like what is in this house....errrggg! So sorry you're no where close! This floor really turned out looking great when I got all done with cleaning the floor & sealing the floor with 2 coats of sealer. Great idea ,but he is strong and young and doing a great job,I think I have to hire someone to clean mine ,too old to kneel down I would never get back up lol
Ha! I would never be able to get back up had I not used a knee brace as well as a back support brace as well as a knee pad. See? You could do it then too! This floor looked really good after I gave it some fresh sealer too.

I just tried stripping Sotelo tile using three applications of stripper and scrub brush. On another section I tried non-diluted simple green and a scrub brush with almost the same result.
Put the simple green on there then brush it in then let it sit there for at least 5 minutes or more then give it a good go with the steel brushes & you'll get it. I have way more of this entire cleaning & sealing floor project. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to cleaning a kitchen tile floor (or something like that) to find all the other videos. I also made videos for when I sealed the floor after I cleaned the floor. You'll want to watch all of those too as there was one big fail that happened while I was sealing the floor in the very first area I did. But I muscled on & got the project done. Looked great when I was finished. You will learn lots more if you watch all of those videos. You might also find them in "kitchen" in the playlists area. Just scroll through the many DIY topics I have in the playlists area & you'll find them. Try it!
I would have liked to have seen the finished product. How do the tiles turn out once you've done this? If you show'd that, washing like this would be very convincing!!

Make sure to watch all of them to get the full effect of how dirty they were then how clean they were then how they looked after I sealed all the flooring. turned out great!

Here's what I want you to do. Go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on "playlists" then scroll down to "flooring projects" then when that opens scroll down to the end videos & you will find all of the videos I made when I was working on these Mexican clay tiles for the cleaning of the tiles as well as the sealing of the tiles. Make sure to watch all of the videos since there's a video in there on a way you Don't want to apply the floor sealer for this type of tile. I even cleaned some tiles right outside by the front door using the same technique & the same sealer I used & they look pretty good. I have tiles outside and a BUNCH of them. I dont have the elbow grease any suggestions? I have a pressure washer
If you have the time & the elbow grease you will be able to clean the exterior tiles just like I show here. I have not tried a pressure washer before so if you use one make sure you don't put too much force on there at first since you might blow out some of the grout lines. Let me know how it goes if you end up using the pressure washer. I have these tiles as well...what are they? saltillo or just ceramic with terracotta color?
You know I'm not sure what these tiles exactly are. I have just always called them Mexican Clay Tiles. I think they are made of clay hot fired & then sealed but don't hold me to it. They have a nice patina to them when they get old like these. Well weathered look but they look really good after you give them a good scrubbing & then add two coats of sealer to them like I did these. I made videos all the way through this project. I wouldn't scrape them with a metal scraper, or use wire brush. Really bad idea.
I could see your point if these tiles were fairly new but these tiles are over 30 years old I would say, probably older as a matter of fact. I tested the tiles before I got going & they were looking fine so I did all of them & they really looked great when I got done. Thanks for taking time out to send me your message....! What stripper and sealant do you use?
I actually didn't use any type of stripper per se. All I used was simple green cleaner & some good old elbow grease with the wire brushes etc.. I have lots of videos for this entire floor cleaning & sealing to see how I do it. Just go to my main TH-cam channel page then click on playlists then scroll down to kitchen projects or flooring or something like that & you will find all of the videos I made. The floors really looked great when I got done. Mind you this type of floor will never look brand new again as this particular floor was over 20 years old but the old world look was still there when I got done for sure. The owner was happy!

Muriatic acid Is a 20° Baume (31.45%) hydrochloric acid solution used for .
cleaning and preparing concrete* prior to etching, coating and sealing.
*Grout is generally a mixture of water, cement, and sand.
I've used muriatic acid to clean exterior concrete driveways & patios. Works great for that...
What is the liquid you used for cleaning?
I used simple green. It really works great. I cleaned then sealed this floor when I got done & it really looked good I must say!....ahem. Thanks for your thumbs up. It is really a chore cleaning these type of tiles depending on how dirty they are but if you stick with it they will look great when you get done....!

I didn't ruin the tiles. these tiles are over 25 years old & don't think they've ever been cleaned. After I cleaned them & wiped them down they looked great especially the grout lines. I then sealed the floor & it still looks old world...only clean.
