    My husband is a clutter junkie!! Hellllp! I've put baskets everywhere for his stuff, however, in a matter of days, they're overflowing. Good thing I love him!

      What kind of clutter is it? Does he have a lot of hobbies or is it just random things? ❤️

    • @tippymarie

      @minimalease Random and hobby items. He never puts anything away..not ever!! Luckily for me, he has his mancave. What doesn't get corralled into a basket goes into his room.

      @rachelneilson9298 I can relate with you and understand your frustrations. My husband is a hoarder. He has lots of clothing, dressy clothes, boots, shoes, papers and lots of car tools. Our extra bedroom got filled quickly with my husband's stuff. Our living room is my husband's storage closet because there is no where no where else to put the remindar of his stuff. The storage shed is filled to the brim with my husband's car tools. I donate my belongings and shred my papers. I'm able to organize my stuff with what little space is left. It's overwhelming for me to see my home cluttered and unorganized.

      This is not the answer you want to hear but it may be your role as his partner to help him put things away. Yin and yang means that you balance each others deficiencies and if you are good at tidying up, then it may be up to you to do so. My husband is the same way but I took the mantle of cleaning and tidying and, although it can be frustrating to feel like everyone is working against you, remember that the cleanliness is your choice and not theirs. My husband, for example, didn't care if it was messy and so I was imposing my values onto him when he is already saddled with his share of responsibilities. Since I have taken it upon myself to be the sole cleaner and tidier, I am happier because I don't wait for someone else to do it and I throw away things I know he won't miss but would never get rid of. In the 5 years I have done this, his habits have improved beyond recognition. He is used to it clean and tidy and now greatly prefers it. He may not do the dishes, but he puts them near the sink (which is incredible from where we were). @@tippymarie

    I have friends who have an extensive and valuable art collection - etchings, lithographs, pottery, regional artists, etc. Each piece is attractive, yes, but as a collection I find it overwhelming. Every furniture piece has art centered over it. Every corner has art hung in it. Every surface has several things on it. So much art that I don’t really see and appreciate any of it. So I really appreciate your recommendation to leave some (many?) walls and surfaces bare.

      Personally, I go to lengths to get the right frames and matte. It might take an hour to get the right maple frame w the right sage green matte.
      Looks insanely great, but that route is NOT cheap. 200 for a SMALLER one. But you'll never get an off the rack result for odd sizes or large stuff. Poster frames are GARBAGE. Especially if you know, for a fact, you can't replace it.
      The right poster frame could be 800 bucks. Custom. I've seen wood and magnets, but not confident they'd work on large items. I like the Japanese stuff when they do it.
      I also think that nobody else has to like it. If they don't, there's the door and don't let it hit you on the butt on the way out.
      I have shorter ceilings in a smaller space here, too. So, going smaller art going forward. Recently, I framed an old photo of my 1st dog standard frames didn't fit and a magazine ad w same sage/washed out green of late 60s. They match. I plan to get an ad of my grandmother's asbestos laden flooring: Armstrong 1965 Montina pattern. It's been there since and was VERY strong. Also, fireproof--bonus! Lol. They'd put these laminate chunks in suspension. It's kinda cool, minus the mesothelioma. Same reason I like sparrows: extremely strong and resourceful.

      Even interior decorators encourage leaving some wall space empty. They say you need places for the eye to rest, so makes sense you find all the art at your friends’ home too much.

    That last tip made me think of the 3 in 1 garbage can I wanted. I couldn't find them anywhere (or the one I wanted at least). I looked at the usual place, ikea, home depot, etc. Long story short, I never found it. But one random, day while walking, I see one on the curb being thrown away. I could not believe my eyes. A perfectly working one sitting on the curb being thrown out. Needless to say, I snatched that thing up quick fast😂. The universe certainly has a way of looking out😊.

    One thing I realised is that even if you're an avid reader, you don't need to keep and display every single book you've ever read. A few years ago I stopped buying physical books as it became cheaper and easier to store e-books and audio books. I went through my collection and donated most of my books, only keeping the ones that I knew I would return to again and again. I no longer use books as decor and I don't feel like I'm somehow lacking credibility because people can't see all the books I've read.

    • @minimalease
      @minimalease  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow ❤️ I hear this! When it comes to books I used to use them as decor as well! I’m so lucky now almost everything I want is at our many local libraries

    I adhere to a lot of these declutterring ideas, I live alone so it’s easier for me. My countertop is long and bare except for one small piece of beautiful driftwood on one end and two items on the other, not one appliance. I have lots of bare walls and am not a big fan of art anyway so hardly have any. I do have one of the big round mirrors from IKEA in my living room and my TV on the center wall, that’s it! Visual or object clutter hurts my head lol. I constantly get rid of items around my house not in use, usually have a bag in the closet for good will items as well.

      Why not put a limit on it? My dogs had 8,000 toys until I had them all in one place and noticed it
      Maybe ask for books or experiences w your kids as gifts?
      Like: please give a book you loved as a kid. A bargain for Frances is one of mine. Or teach a kid a valuable thing. I talked to a kid about math and told them, you only need to know compound interest. That means you have a dollar, invest it, and in 10 years, you'll have 2.00.
      Or how to build stuff, cut wood, fix basic things like a toilet or put a shower head in.
      Don't give junk for gifts/favors. Either. Give cookies or something small, like matchbox cars. Teach a kid how to sew or let them read for you. Or read for your dog.
      No batteries allowed. Maybe wood toys. They're also way less jarring visually.
      Most kids would be a billion times better off losing the expectations of gimme gifts. I'd give my kids books, craft supplies and important skills all day long, tho.
      Fimo clay is a fun thing to do together. Look up Angie Scarr's mini food books. Use the backs of plates, not on stuff you eat on.

    I agree with your advice to stop settling. However, my husband (of 42 years) is a total cheapskate and rarely agrees to buy brand new furniture. Consequently, I have been forced to make the best of it by getting most of my household stuff from thrift and antique stores. :(

    • @minimalease
      @minimalease  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am really cheap but I realized it was really costing me so much more to buy a bunch of cheap stuff I didn’t really like and then move it all around my house until I finally got rid of it 🤦🏼‍♀️ now I still look for a deal but I don’t just buy anything it has to be just what I’m looking for so it means it takes me a lot more time which is good because it makes me really think about what I want for that space. Good luck on your journey friend ❤️❤️

      when someone gives me something I feel like I am the ambassador of finding it the right home. I will tell them how much I appreciate their thoughtfulness and kindness. If they ask about it again I’ll kindly say how it didn’t work for me but I found someone who could really use it ❤️ most people can understand that you cant hold someone to keep your gift but people enjoy giving gifts anyway because giving is a form of love ❤️

    • @minimalease
      @minimalease  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I like to think of books as “projects” each book is going to take time and effort to get through. If you have books on the shelf that you don’t have the bandwidth to read right now let those go first. See if you can find a little library in near by neighborhoods or donate to the library where so many others can enjoy them ❤️ that always helps me donate books when I know someone else can enjoy them too. Try playing some decluttering games. Just some of my thoughts ❤️❤️ good luck friend!

    I am downsizing for the third time because as we aged we went a little smaller. Then my husband passed away and I moved closer to my kids and smaller again. Now I am showing signs of aging and keeping up so my daughter wants me no more than 5 minutes from her. She lives in a neighborhood of big homes so we went to an upscale mobile home park nearby. It is on the same lake they live on but not more than two miles from her. We are in Florida on the gulf side. My house I’m leaving had a canal that goes right into the gulf but this will have a lake view. I am going to have a hard time with my art collection because we collected it over years. I may have to store some and change it out over time. I’ll get a golf cart so I won’t have to drive much. I am having it all painted soft white on the inside so changing color from room to room won’t interrupt the visual flow. The two things I won’t give up are paintings and books. My husband and I collected but I have a little extra room that is going to be the book room.
    I noticed you don’t have rugs. Is that intentional? I am putting in lux vinyl since I am on water and my family kayaks and boats. All easy to clean surfaces and same floor in every room😮. Love the items in a tray. I am getting rid of most of my cookware because I don’t cook big anymore. What about curtains?

    • @minimalease
      @minimalease  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      First off, I'm so sorry for your loss and I am so glad you have what sounds like such a supportive and loving family ❤️ I don't have rugs with my two dogs its very hard for me to keep them clean and the one rug I do have upstairs is more like a small runner that is washable so my small dog can hop up on the bed at night. I know you said you are starting to age (like all of us 🤣) and my grandfather is in his 80's he fell last year because of a rug catching his foot and broke a hip (so just something to think about) I do have curtains because I hate cleaning blinds. The ones I get are usually light because I really enjoy waking up with the sun and letting in a lot of natural light during the day (just my personal taste) ❤️❤️ I hope you have a safe move and enjoy your next adventure! Thanks for sharing!!

      Thank you. My son lives out of state but comes every other month for a week and will be here for the move. My daughter lives about 15 miles away so her plan is to move one room at a time and get everything put away then go back for another so we don’t have a house of boxes, thankfully. Mind clutter paralyzes us. I am 76 and I woke up every morning thinking about my life and thanking God because both of my kids are grown and have made a success of their lives and all of the grandkids kids are headed the same direction. They also get along and have fun when they are together. We never have pictures because no one thinks to get their phones out. For the past two years, Covid and inflation along with the problems around the world have turned everything in our lives upside down. I am now having panic attacks and not leaving my house if I don’t have to. I am so happy to find you because you have practical ideas without going totally minimalist. I hope you don’t mind me asking questions. My new place was a gut job and the last time I saw it it didn’t have walls😂

    Question why do you think [feel] that your kitchen is small? You are so so right we are all different. Thank God. So l find the secret is one person who knows where everything lives [hello Mom….hey Mom where is….?] all the stuff in your home lives somewhere [this is your brain]…a book if you want to know where something is look it up this is my solution. This way [when l’m not available] the people that live with you know too eventually we hope, it’s like a computer or google, the book has in information where the item lives and where to put it away, provided people put things back where they belong, it’s a small start😬

    I LOVE empty spaces!!!
    1 (although small) wall in my living room is empty and 2 walls only have almost matching the same color as the wall mirrors!
    I also have a LARGE empty corner in my living room!!!
    AND ALL OF MY WALLS in my bedroom are completely empty plus 2 corners are empty!!!!
    Only things in there are my Cal King sized bed, 1 bed side table, kitty bed and kitty bowls and toys!!!! (Also air filter & humidifier, small trash bin & a few items on top of my bedside table)
    The things that make it sooooo cozy are the soft cozy PINK microfiber blanket over the white comforter and white sheet & pillow set. I LOVE getting into bed every night AND waking up every morning looking around at my room!!! That's when you know you 'got it right!' for yourself!!!
    I've also heard of the idea of taking smaller area photos and looking at the PHOTO for what do I like vs looking at the IRL area to see what changes you want to make. Somehow we can see the changes we want to make better looking at the photo vs IRL we've gotten blinded by the clutter living with it for so long.
    But this method works best using a corner or 1 wall/area at a time, NOT a photo of the ENTIRE room, FYI

      Such a silly comment. There is a test for the flu. There is a test for covid. Anyone who previously was walking around casually saying “I’m getting over the flu” most likely wasn’t. It’s not “fashionable”, it’s just an additional widespread virus for the virus season. Interesting that you are so pressed by which virus people catch. I’d love to see that studied
