This video tape has actually been floating around for a long time within the tape-trader underworld. What a privilege it is to live in an era where tens of thousands of unreleased bootlegs like this can be watched on demand on TH-cam. Yeah, there was a unique excitement that came with awaiting a package of tapes or CDs in the mail... but the convenience and accessibility factor of online sharing is truly unparalleled.
@@cftvdata I had no idea tape trading was even a concept until I found a punk rock record store in my city that seemed to pop up overnight. They had 3 different vhs tapes that were labeled as containing dk concerts, but I dont have a vhs player at my apartment so I had to leave them
East Bay Ray had a wonderful mix of Dick Dale, Dave Davies and Albert King swirled into his infinitely recognizable special sauce riffs. He put the hook in with clever, powerful, whimsical chords that were melodic, elastic and anthem like. Puts me in the mood when I was seven watching Batman (full tilt joy, Batman, Spiderman and Speed Racer, had a towel around my neck for a cape, danced to the intro, Adam West days, you never knew who might pop up, the Riddler, Joker, Batgirl, It was so exciting and fun. That is what the Dead Kennedys were, fun. They were ironic, musical, loud, intelligent, talented and most of all, sincere. I saw Gibby, HR and David Yow in tiny clubs in Philly in the 80s and they all destroyed it back in the day but I never saw a DK show and this one here is just a great, great time capsule, brings back the memories, punk music masterclass, thank you for sharing.
Not sure what you mean by underrated? He’s one of THE most recognized vocalists from the entire punk movement. Anyone who knows anything at all about punk rock has heard of the Dead Kennedys and probably knows at least a few of their songs, and would be able to recognize his vocals. I think he’s made pretty successful impact. I agree he’s got a unique style, even by todays standards ✌🏻

Man, after hearing Night of the Living Red Necks since the mid-80's, it's a very surreal feeling to actually see it. We all have our personal visions in our heads that are created by what we're hearing. But this is what it actually looked like. Wild.
It is overlooked but the arrangements of the DK songs were so inventive. They didn't just try and kill it with power or hardcore tempos....they got the balance just right.
yes the musicianship can't be denied, the DKs created a frenzied 2.0 asymmetrically version of Kinks songs; East Bay Ray was an updated Dick Dale and Jello is a punkier Morrison. The Dks were a mix of the Doors, Kinks with a dash of Albert King, a vibrant skitzy, ironic, powerful mix.
Exactly and that’s why I latched onto them as the finest punk band. I never bought into the two chords and something to say shit, when there is real talented people like DK who also have something to say.
yeah man for sure, the fooookin nasty chord progressions is what entices, teases and pleases us and lays the foundation for Jello's histrionic vocals to be comfortably placed over it
I got this in a vhs swap with someone from MRR back in the 90s. Of course I was really enjoying it. And then had that, NO WAY!!! moment when "that" song played. Of course it became my favorite videotape from then on. The other part of the tape was the On Broadway show. Still my 2 favorite shows.
I know so many of their songs. Winnebago Warrior crossed Nevada at 110. I live at the dorm and swim in the pool, Terminal, Terminal Preppie. Lol DK yes.
This is so great to see in such high quality. When I was still a punk-obsessed 13-year-old, a copy of this set (along with the accompanying "early" set from the same night) was one of the first bootlegs I ever listened to. It was sent to me by a guy from San Diego named Chris (who ran the BCT label back in the '80s), and who very generously sent me fifty-something shows in the mail so I could get my collection started and begin trading for real. Still one of the nicest and most selfless things anyone's ever done for me, btw, especially in an era of 2x-speed stand-alone CD burners! I remember that this particular set was one that really stood out to me for many reasons - the high audio fidelity, great setlist, raging performance, and of course the presence of "Night of the Living Rednecks" midway thru the second set! It wasn't til a few years later that I got my hands on the video copy, albeit in a much blurrier and higher gen version than what I'm watching today. Thank you guys so much for taking the initiative to tape the show and get the resulting recordings out there into trade circulation.

The reason DK stand out is Jello's command and almost every song they released is memorable in some way. The Owl is different from Holiday in Cambodia is different from Rambozo. They also tap directly into the decade. This is why they stand the test of time.

I was feeling much better after that first time and seen em another 6-8 times in those next few yrs. I was reborn and became a S*P*R for Life. the rest is old now. Memories abound. still. the music is timeless.

Listened to this 1000 times with everything else on the (Give me convenience or give me death) album in my car on my way to go skateboarding, and at work between 19 and 21. My true introduction to punk by one of the best fuckers around! Learned handplants, bs varials, and crashed 2 cars to your music... thanks for the ride
While I haven't seen the Dead Kennedys, I did get to see Jello do a full set with the Rev in Seattle back in 2012. Out of the hundreds of shows I've been to, by far the best.

Ted and Peligro were both great in their own way. Two wildly different drummers that gave the band a unique sound in their presence. Ted's jazzy style definitely complimented their early material better, but with D.H. behind the kit, their sheer power was basically unparalleled. Man, they'd turn into a music freight train when he got going.
@cftvdata I disagree completely. Ted's drumming complimented the group and made them stand out and give them a unique sound. HR just had them play fast like every other band at the time. But, to each their own

My experience was never getting to see one song because there were alway 6-10 people slamming and stage diving, the gigs at the Whiskey in Hollywood (80s)were legendary and extreme, but not as musical as this. No one in front is afraid of getting in a fight, slammed into or being jumped on, free to enjoy!
That's a bummer. Unfortunately the early 80's ushered in a long era of over the top aggression at underground shows. One reason this video is a gem is that we witness the non-conformist free enjoyment of fringe artists by a diverse audience who respect one another.

As much as they can be hard to listen to, they are very well written and original for a hardcore punk band at that stage. Biafra is an horrendous but also very capable vocalist. Hard to believe a punk group this close to a rock n roll renewal was already out by 78

1979! I didn't hear this until 93-94 and was the most mind blowing sounding band i had ever heard, i haven't heard anything since with that effect

Ted was their best drummer. When 6025 was in the lineup they were a real juggernaut
Ted and Peligro were both great in their own way. Two wildly different drummers that gave the band a unique sound in their presence. Ted's jazzy style definitely complimented their early material better, but with D.H. behind the kit, their sheer power was basically unparalleled. Man, they'd turn into a music freight train when he got going.
@cftvdata I disagree completely. Ted's drumming complimented the group and made them stand out and give them a unique sound. HR just had them play fast like every other band at the time. But, to each their own

Thank you for sharing this, looks so great!! My experience was never getting to see one song because there were alway 6-10 people slamming and stage diving, the gigs at the Whiskey in Hollywood (80s)were legendary and extreme, but not as musical as this. No one in front is afraid of getting in a fight, slammed into or being jumped on, free to enjoy!
That's a bummer. Unfortunately the early 80's ushered in a long era of over the top aggression at underground shows. One reason this video is a gem is that we witness the non-conformist free enjoyment of fringe artists by a diverse audience who respect one another.
@@krewgarr good points -being a bit older maybe? I never really got the idea of a 'mosh pit' with the associated 'music to punch people to' .....Watching Ramones on TH-cam with a mosh pit present was a genuinely depressing view.
@@krewgarr Some audience members seem sort of shocked. Don't know how to react. All very new and open waters. Jello conquering the western world. What made early punk so awesome.
As much as they can be hard to listen to, they are very well written and original for a hardcore punk band at that stage. Biafra is an horrendous but also very capable vocalist. Hard to believe a punk group this close to a rock n roll renewal was already out by 78
