42:37 - that was the woman in pink who waved her hand from the window. In the first level, she recovers a lot of Hyde Meter and gives one bag of coins. At other levels, she can randomly do the opposite effect. In the Japanese version, in order to reach the boss, you need to perform the same actions as in the American version: reach by Hyde to the end of level 6, where lightning does not strike. Additional information: ordinary people doesn't hit Jekyll on purpose, but only if there is a terrorist with a bomb on the screen (the man in purple). In this case, they panic and try to hide through the nearest door.
Exactly, the reason why some of the levels in the Japanese version were removed from the american one was because they hinted Jekyll having extramarital relationships with women of questionable morals. Glad that I'm not the only one who noticed about the townsfolk panicking when some madman started randomly placing bombs around, that's one of the very few things that made sense in this utterly broken, yet surprisingly ambitious for its time, game. You can avoid the slingshots by ducking, btw.
To get the good ending you have to take Jekyll to the Street level, and then get Hyde to the Street level. Take the rooftops as Hyde and have him reach the chapel before Jekyll does. Fight the boss, and then you can just walk the rest of the way with Jekyll. The bride will be waiting for you in this version.
The Japanese version is the original, released in 1988. The American version was released one year later in 1989. That should ring a bell when the American opening that you always knew says "Toho" and "Bandai". :)
Despite the awful gameplay and the poor soundtrack, is there anyone here who think that this is one of the best looking NES games ever made? Just look at the level of detail of the buildings, this is pure 8-bit art, to me is a pleasure to look at. I should also mention Castlevania II, it's up there (but Castlevania has an amazing soundtrack to enhance the effect). There is something magical about these two games, you cannot get the same mood with any type of realistic 3D graphics.
If you hit your bride enough times at the end (or keep ducking next to her?) Like 6 times something happens (another ending or game over) was mentioned in someones playthrough (this is only in the jp version)
How else do you think we were fooled into renting this game? We thought we were getting a steam punk Victorian age anti-hero. What we got was a steaming pile of excrement....
Think they disliked it cause the game is so bad do t think it has nothing to do with Mike I consider disliking the video only cause the game but it could just be me lol
This was the first game I ever saw you stream on the Cinemassace channel, and it made me respect you as a gamer so, so much. In large part, my sub to this channel is because of that first stream and how you just gutted out the difficulty like a beautiful machine.
Awesome, I didn’t think you’d do this one. This is the game, bayou billy , this game, Mario 3, Zelda II were all released as derivative works in the United States.
If you recall how you got the "good" ending from your USA playthrough of the game, then you're good to go for the JPN release as well for the good ending, once again, just before you get the final stage with Hyde, you have to reach it with Jekyll, the few differences are more enemies, a not much friendly Phsyco Wave command, and 2 different stages (if I remember right).
If you're ever in need of some Famicom box artwork, check out: gamesdb.launchbox-app.com/platforms/games/27 If a Japanese game was released was released in the US, it can be found under the English name. If it was only in Japan it'll be by the original title.
Hey Mike when you were using Erins Switch for Tetris99 were you using your dock? If you were try swapping out your dock for hers. It shouldn't cut out when streaming so im guessing something is shorting out in yours which is likely what killed your switch. Nintendo will fix or replace your switch and dock free if you give them a call and explain the situation. Their customer service is A+. If you're using a 3rd party dock then stop. They are prone to breaking the switch. BTW the pro controller is wireless, not sure why you play with it plugged in if it doesn't need to be charged. The controller does not transmit data when plugged in so just use it wireless as intended.
Neither version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are easy, and it's an amazing accomplishment that you've beaten them both. However, I do think the Japanese version is the easier of the two. The blast radius of the bomb seems to be reduced, especially on the early levels, allowing you to breeze through them by walking right past the bomb. Even on the barrel level, you may have noticed it was easier (at least marginally) to jump dodge the blast while going left. It also seems like the damage may be a little less than the American version too. Additionally, the Japanese version of the game as a whole seems to run more smoothly. It had few if any frame rate drops and slow downs, unlike the American version. Likewise there were no incidents of randomly speeding up or slowing down enemies. Add to this that (with one or two exceptions, like when you were stuck under the people throwing fruit) the enemy concentration seemed less (especially on pre-barrel stages), the Japanese version just all around seems more reasonable (though still quite a challenge).
@@wasresting1574 Or here's an idea... WATCH IT FOR YOURSELF before bitching. Also the "game is bland?" Way to miss the fucking point. The point is that it's Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde, kind of an important and notable game on this channel, in general. Also, no, it's a fairly unique game, if not exactly a good one. It's a very strange type of game with a weird objective, and the differences between regions is actually an interesting subject. There's a lot that separates this game from your average NES game, whether that's for the best or for the worst. Hell, why do you even care to ask, when you clicked on this video and came to it, if you're not going to watch the goddamn thing? Christ almighty.
A good description of this game is excessive, especially this version of it. It's like a directors cut to a movie no one asked for, just extending boring scenes except you replace boring scenes with torture.
@@mikematei BTW Mike the Hyde ending is the good ending as all the stress enducing enemies disappear and Jekyll conquers his evil side. So yes Hyde boss is the good ending
I don’t think this game is nearly as hard as James and mike once thought; you just have to know how to play. Something like Silver Surfer or battletoads seem much harder. This actually seems like an ok game. Also, mike’s totally wrong: the American Box Art is totally superior.

mike is really cool for tackling this game over the years and sharing his finds. seeing james' video beating it today was so cathartic.

I think this actually was an improvement to the american version.
Gotta love the Rygar music!!

Actually the soundtrack is honestly quite catchy when I think about it
I dunno why but I fucking love the cats in this game. Just the way they flip their shit and meow randomly is fucking hilarious.
If you hit your bride enough times at the end (or keep ducking next to her?) Like 6 times something happens (another ending or game over) was mentioned in someones playthrough (this is only in the jp version)
Hey Mike, can you upload a hi-res scan of the front of the box?
impressive man. it was good times when we all played at TMG a few years ago for james and mike mondays
Yeah, that was pretty savage. Some of the guys were pretty good at it, too, IIRC.
You just don't learn... do you?
The spiders have better movement patterns. They don’t just stop in front of you. Much easier to dodge them
go easy on Mike's ass he had too many games stuffed up there since the Bat-man AVGN episode.
Here's a secret, you can kill the bees by having Jekyll duck and have the bees fly into his face.
that annoying musical note backround beat, is the instrumental that they play on the elevator ride down into Hell
1:18:38 - I don't know why, but I found this hilarious!
The feeling of renting a game from the video store and it being this good.
This is like beating ghouls & ghost once and saying u beat the game. Not the real ending, didn't even fight the boss
That's a different stream: th-cam.com/video/vGSI5fu-TS4/w-d-xo.html

Why does this game have music from Rygar at the beginning? Has anyone ever figured this out??
Donnie London same composer just recycled some of the music

The original Eternal Darkness?

Why on earth did they change the game so much before releasing it in the US?
Make this James and Mike's Monday.
