  • In this video I show features, beauty and function of the Singer Buttonhole Sewing Machine.
The 71-34 uses a whip stitch and barred or bar tack ends in producing buttonholes from 3/8" to 3/4" long. It then cuts the threads and hole after having first sewn the buttonhole.
There are many adjustments on this machine to produce just the right buttonhole. In addition to length the width of the bight, number of stitches in the bar and distance between stitches can all be adjusted.

We had something similar when I was working in Wardrobe at Opera Australia. There were only 2 people in the wardrobe workroom who were permitted to actually operate it as people kept fiddling with the adjustments LOL Was a case of save up all your buttonholes then find the operator to have them stitched all at the same time. Fantastic to watch, thanks for sharing

Thank you for taking the time to share this vid. Watching the machine in operation I was able to see how a part should sit during operation. This allowed me to solve a problem with my 71-30.

What a beautiful machine! Old Singer industrial machines are so intresting. Once used a cobblers machine, .ca 1900, never electrified. Took me awhile to figure it out. Was great fun to use.

I see you. I no longer have that. Trail and error are your friend. Example, get the machine dialed in to say a 5/8" button hole, put in the gauge you are building, scribe a line at the indicator and label it 5/8". Now repeat for 1/2" 3/4" etc.

What would be a good selling price for such a machine?

Isn't that a purl stitch buttonhole? Not that I could find any clear pictures of them :D But some of these machines did whip stitch and some did purl, this one seems to be doing to the second one

I am going off of the literature I found for this model but I don't know the differences between these two stitches to say for sure.
