About 15 years ago my mom gave me her industrial sewing machine and a box full of notions, etc. I had been using my little dressmaker machine to do buttonholes, but I've found it lacking. So I went online to figure out a way to do buttonholes on the industrial machine. To my surprise, I looked in the box I got from my mom and found a mint-condition Greist buttonholer. It came with typical 70s-era instructions which have lots of text and no pictures to help you figure out what they're talking about at times. THIS VIDEO WAS A GODSEND!! Watched the entire thing and have a much better grasp on what I'm doing. 🙂

This is no end of helpful! Thank you so much! I just bought a Greist buttonholer at a thrift shop, and while it is in perfect condition, it didn't have a manual with it. Now I know how to use it. Again, thanks! Also, I love your hand-cranked machine. I had never seen one like that.

Thank you for this! I inherited one of these from my Grandma. I do have the manual but it didn't make sense until i saw it! Used it successfully today!

Just inherited a 1958 singer and one of these was in the box with all of the parts but no manual. This is beyond helpful! Thank you!!!!

Another great tutorial. I bought a singer version a few years ago which was new old stock from a retired singer employee.
I adapted it to fit a bernina 1000
and it has made perfect button holes for me on so many garments

Thank you so much for doing this video. I have an old Sears Kenmore buttonholer that is just like the one you demonstrated. I hadn't used it for nearly 30 years and I'd completely forgotten how to use it on my Kenmore 385.

Thanks for a great video. Very helpful as I've just bought one of these for my Singer 201.I've been trying to make buttonholes with a 1990's Toyota and the results were so inconsistent that I daren't try them out on any sewing projects involving expensive fabric. If the buttonholes with the Greist are anything like the stitches on the 201k then I'm in for a treat:)
UPDATE: just received my buttonholer and tried it out and it's marvellous.Feel much more confident about buttonholes now.

    Once again an amazing video!
When I saw the length of the video I thought I would watch it tomorrow, but you got me hooked after the first keyhole button hole with the narrow second stitching.
The machine took me back 60 years when I got my first Singer.
Unfortunately I never knew of attachments like this.
I once had an industrial machine with similar attachment, but it felt as though the machine vibrated so much and the results were terrible.
Thank you for a very interesting methodical video at a pace I enjoyed.
    Keep up the good work

These are an amazing attachment that give perfect results. I bought one a year ago (brand new) to use on a Brother PQ1500S (high shank, straight stitch) as an alternative to my fully computerised machine, so now have the best of both worlds, specially when sewing jeans etc in a heavyweight denim. I also have a Singer 99K (your demo machine) so keeping an eye out for a low shank version for this machine. FYI...there are 10 models of the Greist buttonholer and afaik the model number is not stamped on the attachment, only on the box...so if the box is lost/damaged/etc then it's pot luck as to which model you might be purchasing if secondhand. Thanks for the video, it will help a lot of people new to this buttonholer so they can get the best results. From across the ditch! ;-)

Replying to my own post...but forgot to ask what number is your Greist that you demo on the Singer 99k please? Thanks

    • @InStitches
      @InStitches  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The box doesn't have any numbering on it but I can see where a sticker once was, so maybe it's fallen off.

I've found that even with drop feed, using the attachment without the included cover plate, the buttonholes don't come out as nice and neat. Helps to decrease puckering and flagging (especially with knits).
    Just my 2¢ 😊✌

Is that a 201? Is there a reason you threaded the needle left to right? I thought it was supposed to be right to left.

I have dropped my buttonholer. The back came off and the pin that holds it came off and also a wire spring. I have no idea how or where to put the wire , do you know anything about where the wire goes?

I have 8 singer buttonholers. It was one of the items I bought as used a year ago, but I haven't been interested in using it.
However, thank you for learning how to use it through this video.
I just don't have a kit with a buttonholer in it. Seeing on eBay, used products are still being sold.
But is it meaningful to buy and use this even now? It is automatically done with a modern computer. I would like to buy this kit that I can buy and use. Ask for your opinion. (And can I also use this kit for 316g singer machine?)

I bought the same buttonholer you show in the video, unfortunately I was not able to make it work on any machine, old or new, domestic or industrial, it looks like the foot bar is too short to reach the plaque, or the foot handle is too long and pushes on the buttonholer top .... Do you have any suggestion? Thank you for this long explanation video,
that made me fall in love with this vintage wonder, would like to be able and use it one day.

Thank you so much for this awesome video. So I ordered a pfaff Greist buttonholer for my pfaff 332. But when it arrives it was missing the feed dog cover plate. Do I need to use it if my machine allows me to drop the feed dogs? I also have a singer buttonholer that has a cover plate that I could modify (but it was my mother in laws so I’d rather not modify it if I can avoid for obvious reasons) 😬
