You guys hit it on the head again! As I’ve mentioned to you guys before, I bought a Trek Rail 7 in April and have ridden it all year. Rode a Specialized S-Works Epic Carbon before this and its night and day, and not just because of the motor. The geometry is far better on the Rail and the components are great as well. My riding is much better and I take on a lot more in terms of drops, techie climbs and overall difficult terrain. I ride more miles in the same amount of time but ride much longer on the eBike. Bottom line, workouts are almost always the same (due to the longer riding on the eBike), but I have much more fun doing it on the eBike. Also one thing you guys didn’t take into account, I ride more cause of how much more fun it is, which means over time, I actually use more calories riding the Rail 7!!!!

Ive not tried the latest levo (which apparently is really good) but usually I get about 2x the caloric burn (garmin HR) on a non-ebike over a 4h 50km ride (with lots of step up/down). It's hard to say which is more fun to me, the ebike is super fun but the non-ebike is sometimes more fun as well (lighter and goes on for longer, in 4h the ebike battery is pretty much at 0% - had to pedal home once). One thing's for sure the ebike is still a workout.
Now, there's another advantage for the ebike: you progress technically way faster on the ebike because you're not as tired all the time.

Good point about being able to progress quicker. That's definitely something we've noticed. A lot of it is also because we want to ride way more often compared to when we were riding regular mtbs.

Mike, stop calling it Acoustic. The bike has nothing to do with sound. Either call it a traditional bike or non pedal assist bike. I know there needs to be a better way to distinguish the difference between them, but acoustic is not it since the word relates to sound.

Eh, it's not something I decided to make up on a whim - it's basically the industry identifying term. While I agree doesn't make total sense - it is what the industry is currently calling them.

Interesting, I wondered why my average heart rate was 150 to 160 on my Haibike Xduro. I was having too much fun. I've since sold the Haibike and am renting a Levo SL to see how it rides vs the additional power of the larger motor and all the weight that comes with it. So far I really dig the SL, much like the stumpy but with a small motor. The motor is actually a bit louder than the full sized Emtb which is a disappointment for me. I miss living in CO.

Yeah the SL is a good great option for an ebike that feels closer to a regular bike in weight and handling. I've one ridden one for a short time before, but didn't notice much motor noise. Was definitely quieter than my decoys motor!

As someone who is used to riding heavy (fat) bikes, I expect you can potentially get a better workout than on a feather light bike! Yay for shootout vids!😜 as I have found, if you could use a power meter and maintain cadence or watt output is can be “more” scientific.

Exactly! And you can better determine the workout you get on an ebike, rather than having the trail, or your fitness level, determine the workout you get on an acoustic bike.

Think the generally accepted term is analogue vs electric

I watch and read a fair bit of e-bike related stuff and a rough guess would be that 90% of people/sites/companies are calling them acoustic. While I agree the term doesn't really make sense, it's just what's currently being used.

This video is the proof that e-bikes allow you do do more, while working less: th-cam.com/video/2NkMrgoCIiE/w-d-xo.html All scientific studies of advanced athletes have shown that because of their training, they can put out far higher sustained energy output and generally be less winded when compared to amateur athletes. In the video I link, you see that a regular amateur rider was able to beat a professional MTBer in a race because the amateur was riding an e-bike. This shows that in the same amount of time, there is no way you will use the same amount of energy when riding an ebike vs a human powered bike. All MTBers will tell you the most difficult part of mountain biking are difficult technical climbs. You can ride a 20 foot technical rocky or rooted climb section and be far more tired from that 20ft than you would from a 1/2mile easy fire road climb. When riding an e-bike however, those technical climbs are more than 10x easier. Comparing e-bike riding to MTB riding is like comparing e-bike riding to motorcycle riding. Are there similarities? Yes. Can you get a good workout from off road Motorcycling? Yes. But they are just different enough that the workouts are different, riding styles different and in essence, just not the same. I would rather have a standard MTB bike AND an electric motorcycle. When I want to go fast, I would get on the electric motorcycle. When I want just me against the trail, then I get on the MTB. e-MTB's are like a halfway house between the two, and maybe, that's why some people like them. They see it as the best of both worlds. I can see that, but still, It's not true mountain biking, just like e-MTBing is not true motor cycling.
