I can keep up with my friends on most of the trails till I hit a good up hill, then I usually need a solid couple minutes to catch my breath, having one lung sucks. So for my 38th birthday I rented a Specialized E-bike, probably the most fun I had on the trails

Speaking for myself, this old Fat man use to race his Iron Horse A Frame with - WAIT FOR IT - (Just like the rotary phone) - No Suspension. I didn’t buy my first suspension mod until Rock Shock came out with the JUDY SL.
Fast forward 30 plus years I still enjoy hitting the trails, but with the amount of miles that I have racked up with the Blood Sweat n Tears buying an E-Bike just as bad if I sold my CJ with a AMC 360 for a Hybrid.
I have a FS Stance and Fat Tire with the Rock Shock Bluto which is all I need to have a blast. From Winter racing downhill, summer Ski Runs to riding out in the AZ Desert I enjoy the pain of climbing hills. You can buy two sweet MTBs for the price of a upgraded E Bike. But hey if you like it and it works for you then more power to you. For those like me who have rocked the trails from the 90's (Old Fat Men) since we put in the leg work and suffered the insane climbs, I prefer the hard work.

Sounds like you've definitely put in your miles! We can see how ebikes aren't for everyone, and for a lot of people wouldn't replace their pedal bikes (but could be added to the collection for the "Lazy" days). But they sure are fun, and allow guys like us to be able to enjoy riding again.
Different strokes for different folks...maybe there's a "biker's high" like runner's high that some people experience (we never have!)...
As for the cost, totally on the same page... it's not a cheap hobby. We're hoping that as ebikes become more common more will be available on the used market, which would allow more people to afford to get into it - We've bought most our past pedal bikes used since they can be super pricey as well!
Respect the opinion - keep hitting the trails!

    • @Troche571

Absolutely, it might make it to the collection one day, at least the setup that you have.
I'm running all top components on my Stance with Maxxis Tires/Tubeless setup.
I would be interested to see if someone pulls a small group together with sponsors for cross country road trip on ebikes one day. Maybe even a Transrockies 3:day race in 2021.
      In the meantime stay safe.

Love the channel so far, but hoping it's not only going to be about e-bikes. Not against e-bikes at all, but I'm sticking with my standard MTB for as long as I can. I'm 38 and am still subscribing to the "ticket of admission" mentality with climbing...or as you guys called it "torture" lol. In the future, and if prices drop a little, I might entertain it. To each their own and whatever gets people out is a good thing, in my eyes. Keep rollin!

Came over to the sport after road racing 5k-26.2 the last 16 years. With the pandemic and all races canceled, starting riding my old Gary Fisher and quickly realized I needed to upgrade, ended up with a SC Tallboy and love it. I like to ride hard as I am replacing my daily 7 mile run with a 2 hour bike ride. So no e-bikes for me. Happy to see another mtn bike channel! Hello from Philly. -Matt

Just wanna add one more thing is that it’s actually going to make you more excited to get back out there to ride and by the time you know you’ll start getting more fit to maybe slowly dive back into a regular bike maybe on some rides if it’s with a group of regular bikes.

Hey Guys, stumbled across your channel and really like it, this video pretty much summed up how I feel about eMTBs. You hit the nail on the head. I'm 53 have have been riding MTBs for about 20 years. In the early 2000’s I competed in a local XC race circuit in the beginner and sport classes. It was just for fun, but it it got me in pretty good shape (for where I wanted to be) no where near the level of the guys in the higher classes, but that wasn't my goal.
I only raced for about 3 seasons, then just kept riding for the fun of it. With 4 kids life got busy, then they started graduating high school and getting married, and about 2016, I just wasn't getting much. Fast forward to last year, I wanted to get out riding again. I went up to a trail near my home that when I was in better shape I completed in about an hour. It is 6 miles out and back, 3 up hill about 1500 feet of climbing, then bomb the down hill for 3 miles. I went to this trail to do a baseline ride. It took me 2 hours to make the same 6 miles out and back. I live in Utah near the Fezzari shop, so went by there and rented a WirePeak for the weekend. The next day I did the same ride on the eMTB and finished in 45 minutes. I was smiling the whole time. That is when I decided I would purchase an eMTB. This spring (May) I pulled the trigger on a 2019 Turbo Levo Comp Carbon (500-watt battery) on a close out deal. It has been so much fun.
As for the expense of eMTBs, they are expensive, but you can go into any Local Bike shop and find plenty of acoustic mountain bikes that are in the same $3000 to $12,000 price range and people are buying those. I'm not saying that everyone can afford that level of spend on a mountain bike. But you can spend as much as you want on any number of hobbies. I paid about the same amount for my Levo as the new Mid-range spec Fezzari Delano Peak or a Spech Stumpjumper EVO Pro 29. I had 3 motorcycles in my garage that I hadn't been riding for a few years either, so when I decided to get the Levo, I sold all three motorcycles. So it really didn't cost me any "new" money, I just switched out my gear. Now I'm out having fun on a MTB again.
As for the exercise conversation. Check out this study: news.byu.edu/intellect/e-bikes-provide-intense-exercise-but-it-doesnt-feel-like-a-workout . It pretty much backs up what you were saying. Nearly the same exercise, more fun. At my age, I’m less concerned with ultra-fitness than I am with just having fun, and feeling like I can ride like I did 15 years ago. The only problem is that even all padded up, when I crash it takes me longer to recover than it did 15 years ago.
No matter what you ride, ride on... hope to see you on the trail some time. Colorado really isn't too far beyond Moab!

Awesome channel guys. Glad to see some more Colorado MTB content. As someone who lives to ride, I really dig the climbs *and* the descents. For me, while I love sending it downhill, it’s also about fitness and the challenge of clearing a climb. That said, whatever gets you out on a bike is cool with me. I’d rather see more folks getting into cycling and expanding our sport than the opposite. Also hit up Buff Creek if you haven’t already. Great system that would kick ass on an EMTB.

If I had 6 grand burning a hole in my pocket... well actually I'd build up my truck first. But another 6k, I'd hop on the EMTB train for sure. In AZ, basically the easiest trails you'll find, even in the Phoenix area, are blue square with pockets of black diamond. I'm getting back into shape fairly quickly since getting a new bike, but oh my god these uphills with all the loose rocks are killer. An EMTB would make that sooo much easier lol.

I totally agree. I Re-started started mountain biking in my mid 40s after a looong hiatus with family work etc. I tried with standard mtb but it just took a lot of me after each trail ride.
Fast forward, with my focus Jam2 ebike, each ride is soo much fun. I still manage to keep my HR in the 120s and above and I do get a work out of it.
I feel there is a role for ebike in the group of people like myself who is not fit but would like to get out and enjoy the trail.
The more people going out enjoying the great outdoor is a bonus regardless of the bikes they are on

  • @matthew9867

Some bike shops are renting these e-bikes. I can't swallow the purchase price but rented a santa Cruz heckler cc e-bike for around $200 for a few days. There is nothing more fun than a good e-bike. If you can't afford to buy one, give a rental a try to get a taste of the fun.

Really the only problem with e-bikes is in a safety manner in regards to two directional trails. People are already descending fast and then you add the increased speed of an e-bike both down and uphill... also I've noticed it can put people that don't really know how to bike on trails that they shouldn't be biking on because they're on an eBike and haven't developed the experience or skill. Mike love the content always, great video!

    • @mtbco8327

I switched to emtbs from my analog bikes and I'll never turn back.. I'll be getting a superlight embt like the rise or kenevo/levo sl or trek rail ex-e to go with my levo.
I also keep at least 140 bpm + for 1-2 hours 4-5 days a week. My riding has gotten way better just because you're riding more, not only more days but more of the trail more often.
The upside and downside of that is crashing obv. as any mtbers knows, a crash is bound to happen at some point. The more you ride, the higher the probability. You're getting better on the bike (even if you have been riding 20 years +) so stupid crashes don't happen as often but as progression goes.. you start doing harder features more often.. you might do the same drop 10 times more in a week than you would have normally. That means you can go down 9 times more, or not at all.. but it's still a possibility. That's not to say you will, just know that you more you ride a trail.. the more the possibility is there. I'll still take progression any day of the week or I wouldn't be riding. Just know that if you're getting one and have to be careful for work etc etc etc. Sometimes you'll get in over your head much quicker because you progress a an exponential rate.

Great site that has all kinds of items you may need for trailing your ebikes from anything. Got a 4 bike cover on line to keep it covered while driving and while not in use at camp sites (so people can’t see the bikes and want to steal them), had to use the 4 bike one due to the geometry of the Rail 7. Once I got it dialed in, worked fantastically!

A lot of the trails are allowing emtbs now (class-1) as they don't do any more damage than a normal bike. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't ride them. The forestry service already approved them for most trails, BLM already did.. In CA most places you can ride a regular bike you can ride a emtb.. including the bike parks. I know some big national parks are going through the process of gathering data and rider input on the environmental impact, it's been in total support of the class-1's so I'd assume in the very near future class-1 will be allowed on every trail a regular bike is allowed. Class-2 and Class-3 absolutely not. Those are reserved for OVT only.. and it should stay that way..

      @LastLineOfDefense 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Lol. You are in fact wrong.
Or I guess there is the very real possibility that everyone who rides e-bikes' heart rate monitors are wrong.
If you've never ridden one, or don't really understand how they work, it might be confusing - but it's really pretty simple. Say on an acoustic bike you pedal with 100w average power up an incline and that allows you to go 4mph. With an e-bike, you pedal with that same 100w from your legs, and your motor puts in another 200w - allowing you to go 12mph up the hill. Since you're putting in 100w of power from your legs, you have the same heart rate, are burning the same calories, and are going 3x the speed on the inclines. On the downhills, you're burning about the same calories and going about the same speed. So hopefully you are understanding now conceptually - it's quite simple.

Last Line Of Defense anyone that rides them passed me up a hill are not panting or sweating...that’s a fact haha. Sure if your are killing it cause your stoked about having a new e bike and you want to prove to the world they are better than a mtb for fitness than sure. but riding that pace will soon wear off and you will start lolly gaging up the hill like everyone else and not break a sweat. Your in the honeymoon stage . Your mind will not let you keep that pace going up the hill when it know it doesn’t have to work that hard lol. Then all your fitness talk will end .
      You will see
Whereas a real mtb you have to work if you want to get to the top and there is no two ways about it.

You know what bud, you are absolutely wrong 😂 and here is why:
      1. If someone WANTS to workout and has an e-bike for some reason, he can simply turn the bike off and not only he can get a good workout, but he will burn so much more calories compared to using a normal bike because E-bike is heavier. So here is for the workout
      2. Let’s say a person can burn 1000 calories in one sessions before he rips apart and dies on the ground. Now here is what happens, he can burn that X amount of calories (in this example 1000) in 5 miles using a normal bike OR he can burn the same amount of calories in 100 miles on an e-bike.
      3. Since you can use less energy on an e-bike, you will be able to ride longer which equates to MORE fun, more adventure and surprise surprise, more workout and calorie burning due to the WAY longer ride 😬
Conclusion: Dumb people (who are plenty out there these days) think you can’t lose weight, burn fat/calories, or get a workout on an e-bike. The reason they think like that is:
      1. They cannot afford an e-bike
      2. They have never even tested one
      3. They can’t even test if they want because maybe they live in a rural area where they deal with sheep and cow more than technology and devices
      4. They most probably are not educated and that is why they can’t logically understand the relation between workout longer but less intense is equal to working out harder but in a short period of time
I hope people get educated and try to use their brains (if they have any) so they don’t embarrass themselves by showing how dumb they are 😂

If you are older or you have a straight up disability I get using an ebike but if you are a perfectly regular person ride a real goddamn bike instead of being lazy. Also at 15:50 you have it totally wrong about all mountain bikers hating ebikes because they like feeling rewarded for the downhill which lots of people do but lots of mountain bikers hate ebikes because they don’t want to support people taking the amazing sport of actual MTB and then making a version of it that takes out so many important factors.

You aren’t fooling anyone, you got the e-bikes because it’s whole lot more fun without all the extra work. I have learned to enjoy the grind and the pain while climbing. It’s a challenge and challenges is where I thrive. Nothing like reaching the summit after a heart-pounding climb. I also love the technical aspect of climbing. Look, if you were 60+ I wouldn’t blink, but at your age you should be on a standard trail bike if exercise is a priority. I bet I can keep up at with your $6k bike on my aluminum Marin Rift Zone 2. If you are going to discuss Chico, say Chico not CA. CA is a big state. You spend like 10 min talking about fitness which leads me to believe that it’s one of many reasons behind your decision to buy an ebike. Then you admit you are too lazy to pedal a regular bike. You bring up your age as if you are too old to ride a regular bike. I don’t buy it. I think, as you guys have admitted, you are too lazy. Lol, I burn over 1k cal in less than 1.5hrs. Also, your eBike is probably pushing 50lbs so that 750W has to push more weight. Power delivery is only a portion of riding well and riding fast. A lot comes down to the rider, the experience, and the mountain bike set up (suspension and tires being dialed in, etc). I think too often we try to justify our purchase with whatever reasons we can come up with. I just think it’s important to be honest with yourself because you are the only one losing when you are lying to yourself. I like your finishing comments when you clarify that it’s all about fun for you, that’s honesty.
My last ride 13.3 miles, 2,167ft elevation gain, 1:26:04 moving time, avg power 194W, avg speed 9.3mph, 1119 cal burn. Napa, Ca. If exercise is a goal, you don’t NEED an ebike.

Both with full time jobs, kids, and other life obligations, it's hard to get out more than once a week -- yes, more excuses!
Even if we had that time to get into great climbing shape, we'd still be riding ebikes. For us, the increased amount of enjoyment on the climbs, the time saved climbing, and ability to explore more places with ease just makes it a no brainer for us.
