Well the thing about investing is that it’s a lot easier if you buy things at 60-70% of value. Lots of people try “investing” with speculation and that’s not the best way to do it
card shows are the great equalizer....really ....money transfers from the unfortunates to the people that know they can take advantage of them . That is life. Every card at the new store can be discounted 40 % to come up with the real cost to the store owner and start from there .

That’s a nice extra 10% of profit, giving you an extra 10k for your store. That’s a nice buy Geof. If you broke that down to 5 - $20,000 lots, you would of had to pay 70% of comps. Maybe even 15k per 20k.

That has happened for years all the way back to the 1998 Flair Masterpieces when two collectors found they both had the same Ken Griffey Jr. 1 of 1. Same exact card and started exposing cracks in the hobby.
Cash is king but I would probably offer him about 50% and see where he was at. Because some of them, high in cards might not be high in cards in a month. It's a gamble.

The older cards of the legends will sell but the ultra modern crap is the same that everyone else has and by the time they sell them these guys won’t even be in the league.
Personally, I would have gone through more comps on a lot of the cards. If one card has crazy prices 100% his prices on others were insanely priced too. I personally believe a deal of this magnitude should have taken a lot longer
I think you're making a big mistake on buying these huge lots. You're buying cards that are going down nearly everyday. 60% comps today is a good deal. But before too long most cards will be selling for less than that its inevitable. So unless you resell the stuff asap you wont make much profit. You will get stuck holding a lot of that inventory. It will take quite awhile just to get back what you initially paid. Thats a lot of work. Now is not the ideal time to open a shop.
Serious question. Why partner with whatnot when you have a YT channel as big as SCI? Why not just run breaks, auctions, sales, etc. Right here and save the 13% or whatever deal youve made with whatnot? You dont need them. Unless theyre letting you live rent free (commission free), youre just cutting your margins and forcing you sale prices over comps higher? A lot of this feels like partnership dollars vs the age old truth in any business which is "do right by your customers." But I do t know everything. Thats why Im asking. What is the advantage to using whatnot over your own controlled platform?

If anything, sell on Fanatics Live as they are going to crush Whatnot and have much more stringent guidelines on who can and can't break on there. But all of that is nonsense if you have a sizeable following already - On YT, you can be your own master, not pay any selling fees and build your own reputation. It's exactly why breakers like Stryker, Jabs and ChiCity don't go there or use it as their primary vehicle for sales. Why give them a cut when all they are is a middle man between you and the audience you created on YT?

Why are you buying at 70% comps in a declining market at shows? Will you continue to buy at 70% when you open the store? Why not wait and let people BRING you cards at your store, sell for cash and I bet some of that cash is spent at your new store. Buying at shows seems counterproductive.
Let's make the math easier for you! What is 10% of 70? 7 right? Now 20% would be 14, 30% is 21, 40% is 28. How much is 70 + 28=98. So 45% is a pretty close guestimate

For a dealer to pay 60% to buy that much is very high. I wouldn't pay more than 50% of sticker. Good luck to them.

Whatnot is 24/7 auctioning/selling cards. It’s a monster. Why not take advantage of all platforms my man.
