We thought that our a.c compressor was bad but it turned out to be just the AC compressor solenoid valve....I bought it off of Amazon for 38$ and when I removed the belly pan it was very easy to replace..... recharged it myself and everything appears to be real good, just gotta wait till this Florida summer is in full swing to be sure.
@@lenwoodcruze3594 I ordered a valve but it was a different size & the one in my car had metal shavings in it so I probably still need entire new compressor, how did yours go? This Eurotuner site has some listed for $400
@@DigitalDissident my ac stopped working again so I paid just 900$s to have a new compressor and all related parts installed....not sure why it stopped working but it's fast approaching summer here in Daytona Beach Florida and a properly working ac is a MUST.
I just bought 2008 passat variant 2.0 tdi 170 hp!! 115k miles in Denmark. Looking forward following the channel, this video helped me make a prudent purchase
Scary thing: I have had three out of the five listed that have failed. Luckily one of them, the cam lead and cam shaft, was under warranty. That would've set me back almost $2k at the stealership.
My 08 BPY 1) regularly replaced the cam follower 2) replaced ignition coils every 100,000 miles 3) yep, had 1 CV boot tear 4) the clutch on my ac compressor seized on mine, where the starter could not overcome the seized compressor
The best financial decision I've made in years was getting rid of my 2.0t Passat. It was awesome to drive, had a great interior, a really great sound system and good fuel economy but unfortunately ended up costing too much in maintenance. The steering lock problem was the last straw. It was a sad day when I got rid of it I don't miss the repeated, expensive headaches at all.
i have steering lock warning, light comes on periodically but does not prevent normal operation. Did urs get progressively worse? I also have no cold AC, if solenoid swap doesn't fix I'll sell it because compressor swap is not worth it.
Great video! It's hard to tell how reliable these cars are since I see mixed results regarding them. It doesn't help that people with a bad experience are more likely to post about it that people with a good experience. So even though they can get problems, would you call them reliable?
Definitely depends on what kinda of engine it has in my opinion. I bought one because I needed a car to work in the summer not knowing much about VW specs/models (bmw guy) not knowing it was an FSI engine. I literally needed to replace almost everything and I’m almost 3k in repairs deep (no dealerships all by myself w my buddy). Cam follower was busted completely through so replaced cam follower as well as HPFP & LPFP. Had to do valve cover gasket, spark plugs, coil packs, coolant temp sensors, replaced all fuses & relays, fan control module, PCV & brakes + rotors + all brake lines. Ended up being a faulty ECU. I was able to save money & grabbed a used one that was updated & now the car can finally run w no epc light then brought it to VW to flash my vin on it. Gas is still very shitty but I missed 2 months of working so gonna keep it until end of the summer. I recommend the TSI engine. Much more reliable than shitty FSI
My 2008 2.0T passat running great, now it has already 218,000 km on it, two problems : 1. Driver side door hinge making noise when opening or closing . 2. Consuming engine oil. What I am worrying about is timing belt replacement, seems it is time to replace and may cost a lot.
Nice to see a video recapping these failures letting me know I'm not the only one. :-) 2006 Passat here. I have had all those items fail at one point or another. Coil packs replaced twice...once under warranty. Even transmission developed a leak and needed replacing. You would not believe all of the things that went wrong/needed replacing. Platinum warranty (which I got for almost free) covered a lot of that. I do love my Passat (drives great) but will never buy a first year model again. Good news? So much of car has been replaced should be good to go for awhile.
They have issues, but every single car ever made has issues... I'm actually buying a 2006 Passat, and drove beautifully, and repairs are reasonable compared to my Audi A6.
Exactly... when people ask which car is the best I say, if cars didn't have issues they wouldn't have mechanics that specializes in every brand. I unfortunately bought my 07 late into its age so things are wearing out naturally at this point, but my b4 passat was 23 years old and biggest repair was new tranny, but how many people are driving 20 year old cars up and down the east coast like my car did. That made me a vw supporter, but I may be going Japanese just because of the lack ease of diy on my passat.
I’ve Owned my my 2005 passat since 2010 and it has 230,000 Kms on it. and I never had one of these issues...maybe it’s just luck. main problem With mine was the electronic handbrake motor
Was it the switch? Or a cracked actuator case? Mine has a cracked actuator case and I get the flashing warning light with a dinging while I drive. How do I get rid of that?
My 2007 Passat Wagon now has just around 160K miles (~250,000 km), and I just did $1100 worth of repairs. One of the failures was P0304 that HumbleMechanic mentioned, but I didn't see this video before I got it fixed, and the VW dealership didn't mention anything on a recall either. I also got my CV joints replaced back around at 100K miles so I am 2 out of 5 so far. I'm hoping to never face the other 3. =)
From your list, I've only experienced worn/torn CV boots... What I experienced: 1. Carbon Buildup 2. Break Vacuum Leak 3. AC Leak For the coils packs, I just bought the red coil packs to replace them.
Great Video as always! I have a 2009 Passat wagon with the 2.0 TSI and Tiptronic automatic. So far I have not encountered any of the problems listed here. What I have had are common TSI failures such as broken flaps in the intake manifold and a faulty EGR that led to rear main seal failure and a big repair bill. Biggest complaints are front door lock modules that keep failing and RUST! Rust on the inner door rocker panels due water ingress behind the seals. I’ve had the seals replaced and the rust repaired under warrantee, but it just keeps coming back. Now I find there is rust on the rear hatch and inner door edges as well. I know this is a B6 Passat problem as I had a 2007 Passat previously and it had the similar rust issues, only more advanced. The 2009 Passat is a lovely car, but I just wish it would not turn into a rusty beater after 110,000 KM and just 10 years of use. In comparison my 2000 Golf GTI has ZERO rust on the body.
I just bought a B6 Passat VR6 wagon for 3500$s with 134xxx+ miles on it....one owner, good CarFax....I'm still nervous eventho I'm a hands on type of person....I just subbed needless to say LOL!.... Thanks.
AWESOME INFO!!!! I'm always lookin for pattern failures to help me diag cars. We see everything in my shop so anything that can save me some time chasing a problem is a great resource.
Let's see. 08 with 190,000 miles 1. Replaced axles because of boots. 2. Replace cam followers every 15,000 miles. Also fuel psi drops under heavy throttle 3. Steering column lock issues with occasional no start 4. Replaced the solenoid in the ac compressor twice 5. Replaced the electronic parking brake module because of a reoccurring fault. Easier to replace then have the software updated. 6 random led taillight fault. 7. Clear coat is shot With all this, I still love my car, but would love to trade it in on a CC
Here in Europe B6 are famous with tdi injectors failure (Siemens piezo injector). Also with electric brake failure , And dual mass flywheel problems ... despite all problems it is for me one of the best driving car and good looking
A4 Cabriolet B6 BDG 8H7 2.5 V6 Tdi, is my project Car Charles I guess you havn't seen many of these as you guys across the pond like sparkies best. Happy New year to you. Love your videos. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
Im looking at a 2011 VW Passat V6 FSI CC Type 3CC MY12 tomorrow Thanks for this info now i know what to look out for :) Apparently he said one of the tyre pressure sensors is out and is $150 to fix
Yeah, I really like the idea, I say keep it up! I'd be interested to see one on MKIV dubs in particular, as I had 2. I put way more labor and money into those 2 cars than every other car combined; they deterred me heavily from buying dubs - probably not forever, but for awhile, so I would be interested in seeing what was considered common issues for them.
Hi @humblemechanic, Are these 2.0 turbo FSI engines interference engines? In case camshaft timing chain failure will the valves collide with pistons? There is a 06 passat that I'm looking at which timing chain broke. I'd like to know what kind of damage I'm looking at? Thanks
I love your videos. Informative. However; as a previous Mark V Golf (Rabbit a la North America) owner and current Toyota driver, I have to ask: Other than fan folks/enthusiast nuts or first timers with the brand (as I was with my Golf 2.5 5-speed- I read all the Mk IV horror stories and yet STILL took the plunge), who would really buy a VW? They drive fantastically, have that magic, solid feel, and a general feel of "quality" that unfortunately just doesn't come through in real life. I had glitching audio, speed control, power windows, blowing headlamps (seriously, three sets of bulbs from brand new in two years!), failed clutch, every dash HVAC knob BUT one broke, the fat people on the passenger side breaking a wire in the seat resulting in an air bag light thing happened, bad steering column that had to be replaced because it started making a grinding noise, and probably a couple more things. What a blessing in disguise for me when some teenagers ran a stop sign and I T-boned them, totalling my car. I can say VW's are VERY safe! I can't imagine what all other problems it would have had, having watched your other excellent videos, Mr. Humble Mechanic. Since my VW, I've had a few other cars. I currently drive an 11th Gen Corolla S. Until I have deep pockets and less limited time, I am sacrificing soul for "perfection". It may be tinny compared to a VW, but I've had 0 real issues and at 62K already from new! Keep up the good work!!!
I have an 07 2.0T and this ignition coil failure got me crazy when I first bought it a year ago. I regularly have the steering lock warning... uh oh... any idea how much it might cost to replace it? Very recently I had the “engine running too lean at idle” fault, any clue?
I have the same year and and engine, keep having a alarm chime three times and a red alarm goes on the digital display. I can't see it cause my digital display is broken. Would you happen to know what it is.
We have a 2008 2.0T and we finally had to replace the faulty column last year to the tune of CAD800$ at the dealership. It was acting up mostly in the winter when things contracted due to cold weather I presume because it always worked fine during summer months. I researched it quite a bit and it appears that control board has bad micro switch and poor soldering on it but ultimately I decided to just let dealership replace it with the new unit. Will see how long this one will last as we plan on keeping the wagon for 15 years at least.
Meh. I have a May 2006 build date for my 2006 BPY. It's been an absolute charmer...and I still have the original A/C compressor; I do remember how bad some of these that came through Ciocca's shop.
Please. Its not about taking care of the car so much as its more about vw using shitty parts. How many recalls have they had? how come they are in the bottom 5 of JD Power and Consumer Reports quality and reliability charts?
TijucaWeirdo No...no its taking care of your car. My B5.5 Passat trucked on to 273k *miles* and I sold it for a down-payment on my new B6 :) I took care of that and I intend to take care of the new one
The more I took care of my B5 Passat, the more it bit me in the ass. Dealer finally bought it back from me. Problem is, you can't play catch up with these cars, and you need to live or work near a good vw indy shop. As for these cars lasting 300k, anything would last that long, given the work and investment put into them. Americans throw away Fords and GM's and Hyundais when the transmission goes at 200k; a Passat owner probably would fix the car. Passats are not viable for people with moderate means with only 1 car, no DIY skills, and without a friend in the business. Lack of support from VW and its dealers compounds the issue.
NO, it's not "taking care of your car". I've had a VW too, and let me tell you: they are fabulous feeling, chintzy, fragile Euro trash with endless quality and reliability problems. Good gawd, my 1996 Plymouth Breeze cloud car had fewer problems as a ten year old car I got just after high school than my VW Golf V (Rabbit) did from BRAND NEW. *I went directly from that Mopar to the 2008 VW in February 2009. I expected so much better. Toyota is where it's at if you want dead reliable.
I have a ‘99 with over 300,000 km on it and still going. Had to do the timing belt and a few other things. My daughter’s turbo ‘06 just died with only 225,000 kms.
One thing not mentioned, probably due to rarity, is the oil pump bolt will come loose and eventually sheer off. This failure if not mended will grenade the engine. Timing chain and oil pump all need replacing. From dealer that's a $5,600 fix. It can show up through low pressure from fuel pumps. Be aware!
I had an 09 Passat Komfort purchased 5/2009 w/ 50 mi on the ODO. For the seven years I owned it, there was a love and hate relationship w it. The car was serviced at dealer and at a VW mechanic after the warranty ended. Failing water pumps (3), PCV valve failures, steering lock failures, coil packs burning out, and crankcases wore me thin. CV boots were chewed out before 50k. Last catastrophe was the leak of oil from the car causing the engine to seize at 120k miles. Would take $5k to fix. After it sat in my driveway for a year, I sold it to a junkyard because it was a shiny piece of metal that couldn’t work. My Accord, while not as refined, runs circles around this car. I wonder if VW’s Americanized strategy has helped with reliability.
What’s the preventative measures to make sure the compressor doesn’t fail? Ours is still original. We have 2008 FSI model and no cam issues and I still have the original Hitachi fuel pump on it but I replaced a follower as a preventative measure at 90,000km. Steering column really pissed me off for sure because it was the only time I had to take it to the dealership.
Love your posts! Can't wait to see more of your R32! I have a 2008 Passat VR6 4motion with 258,000+ miles on it. I have had some sporadic, intermittent misfires that seem to go away as quickly as they appear. However, the car can function just fine for many months before the next mishap... Example: heading home from work, turn corner after stopping, car starts misfiring, shut car off when home, get scan tool, turn car back on...its running fine... Do you think this could be the coil packs? When I scan it the only codes will be the misfire(s)... A 2nd issue I just have been putting off diagnosing is my 12V outlets. They quick working about a year ago. Have you seen this before? I replaced the fuse...or attempted...it blew as soon as it made contact. Any idea's what to look for?
I like the idea of this video type. although, if there are common failures that cost so much for the repair. kinda hard to justify purchasing the vehicle in the first place. Great info to know. Thank you Charles.
Hum-Mech, great videos. I am looking at a 2009 Passat with low miles. At some point, did they work out the bugs so 2009 is less prone. In addition, you did not mention chain tensioner, is there a time where the tensioner does not need to be updated. Thanks, a huge VW fan!
Hi, you forgot to mention, dual mass flywheel problems, oil pump failure due to worn hex key, EPB switch failure, EPB motors cracking and seizing, door handle mechanism failing, rust and corrosion especially around tailgate lights, plastic intake manifold flaps breaking, engine shutdown due to faulty injectors (recalled finally), this is just a few of the common faults seen in North America and Europe. B6 = avoid avoid avoid!!
+TheJungleApe in the US injectors were never recalled. There was a warranty extension, but not a recall. I did forget about the parking brake issues. Several software updates on that too. Intakes was another one that was common. Much more on the later B6 cars(I think I was thinking more along the BPY at the time of the video). But I also haven't seen many oil pump modules on that gen. I haven't ran into much rust issues. But that may be due to my location.
intrestesing wel I'm about 188k on my 06 passat with the vr6 fwd and knock on wood the most expensive single item I had to replace was my battery and second was both axles besides that she is still running like a champ and trust me she still have a trick or two up her sleeve when I run up against some of these new turbo cars like ford st and Subaru and even Audi they face start to drop when they see this old girl running them down
Hej i just subscribed, got 2006. 2.0 diesel and got. Lots problems with pedal and fuel pump seem loosing power and shut down engine, I start think to change to Volvo However I love it
I'm looking at a 2010 with 147k miles, it's mint. DSG but they want 3900 and used car prices are high so I might have to cave. But doesn't this year have TSI? They don't have the cam follower issues, thought that was only the FSI?
Surprised I didn't hear about the Water Pumps.....before I bought my 2008 2.0t wagon i was told that was something I would need to save and prepare for.
Hi HumbleMechanic, You seem to know a lot about these cars and as it happens, I've just purchased a VW Passat 2007 Highline 2.0 TFSI. Now, If you have the time, I'd appreciate if you could answer three questions regarding the car. 1. Are the 2.0 TFSI and the B6 the same car or similar when it comes to problems that might occur? 2. The AC in my car functions as it should, however, my wife and I just noticed that when the AC is on there is an odd sound coming from it and it goes away when we turn it off, it sound like hissing or something like that. I hope it's not what you've just described in the video! What would you assume it could be? 3. When it comes to this model, what are things or problems that we should look out for (it's driven 100.000km or 60.000 miles). Thank you in advance!
I'm having trouble with my tailgate/boot lock on my VW Passat 1.9tdi 2006.. It keeps unlocking and locking.. And then doesn't shut at all.. And I've noticed online that other people are having problems too.. Any suggestions..??
07 passat 2.0t sunroof leak, flooded the floor front and back, on driver side. No power, battery fully charged. I believe it to be the comfort control module under the floor. Trans. control mod. is also there. Headliner is also falling down! I`ve already changed out at least 7 other modules, front end, the complete a/c system, rear suspension, breaks, turbo, etc. etc. My question is ... Is it worth it to spend even more money just to get it running again to sell it? Or should I just sell it for parts? Drives Awesome! When it`s running... Thanks for your time, ~Rock~
YIKES! Man if you have full coverage, call your insurance company. Maybe they will total it from the water damage. The B6 didn't have those modules under the carpet. That was a B5 thing
the sunroofs have drain hoses that fill with leaves/debris. mine caused trunk to fill with water, blast of air cleaned them out. never had problem again. your leak may be different or filled to point of no return
lol currently have a inner drivers side boot torn, but ehh, it does not rain much here. thank god i have not had issues with AC system. also seen alot of old diverter valves with torn diagrams. had to upgrade that mine had a small leak.
Hi humble . I need to replace my steering rack on a 2004 vw beetle 2.0 . While doing so i think i will replace the high and low presure lines plus the pump. Im a skilled dyier Is this a dificult job any tips or thing i should be aware of . Cheers
I have 400444 miles on my 2001 VW TDi Jetta. Just bought a 2007 rough running FSI Passat. I hope it will run soon. It is step up in comfort riding with much space rrom.
Bad Duet just got a vr6, no start, no crank. Fixed the timing, oil pump, and fuel pump have more red cods than money. Thought about going starting from the engine P2294, and P0864 but this immobilizer BS has me concerned. Also heard that after the fuel pump swap the fuel management controller needs to be reprogrammed. Is that true?
Hi, what about code 17669 PD unit injector cylinder 1 (n240) regulation range exceeded P1261 short with power? Please, could you make video on that? It causes a hot start problem apparently. No idea what to fix. New Injector? New sealing for injector? Bad connector on wire mash for injector? Or all together? Or some sensor?
Wish I knew as much about them as you do I got mine and not even the motor would turn over. I changed starter and alternator and battery. Now it sounds like just the starter solenoid is turning might get the motor to turn if lucky but. 🤷♂️ Clueless I've never owned more worked on foreign vehicles before ! Any ideas ?
I have an 08 B6 3.6L 4Motion Sedan. It has 197,000 miles. I have the requisite Steering Lock Column Malfunction - occasionally -- which corrects itself by taking the key out, locking the wheel, then restarting. I am afraid it will eventually fail totally. Will VW fix this under the recall with the miles I have and the age of the car? Also, I have an issue with idling. In park, at random times, the rpms will surge to 2,000 then back to 500 or so. It does this repeatedly, and seems to happen once the car has warmed up a bit. Happens more in summer than winter. I had the codes read at an Autozone. Can't remember which ones it was storing, but they said it was fuel sensors on both sides of the motor. Not sure if that is the exact problem or a consequence of the problem. I also have issues with the front brakes rattling. This is because the mechanic 'forgot' to install the clips that keep the pads from jiggling. It obviously happens anytime the brakes ARE NOT applied. And lastly, my particular Passat came with the IPod adapter in lieu of the CD Changer magazine (in glove compartment since it is a Navigation model). Do you know where I might find a new (or used) magazine for the car? I would even be willing to trade the IPod adapter for a magazine if someone was interested. Thanks in advance for a reply and for posting this video! It is appreciated!
hey man, love ur VW passion, can't seem to find a problem I have with my 2009 Passat wagon, the electric tailgate doesn't latch all the way so the light stay on. what to do? thanks
Yes for the engine, like with the Passat, GTI, GLI, and some cars on the Audi side, this was up to about 2008.5. The later 2008s and newer moved to a different engine.
I am have jerking and popping problems when car is being put in park reverse and drive and while driving it is jerking g when going through gear changing. I had another transmission put in but it was doing the same thing and now it's worse. What can be done to get it fixed at a decent price?
Sorry I know this video is old but this should be called bpy Passat failures the ccta/cbfa fail very differently as in intake mainfolds, rear main seals, and main drive timing chains, haven't seen a steering lock fail on anything newer than like an 08, fuel pumps still fail but not in the way the bpy did
I have a question, If i remove the steering column then steering lock / module then refit the steering column minus the steering lock / module will the steering wheel and wheels turn, I need to tow the car from A - B , But the steering is locked
I have a 3.6. Any issues you could tell me about it? Also how can I find out if my steering column was changed. Sometimes when I start the car it cuts off after running for a second
Yeap, mine was the steering wheel lock column, high pressure fuel pump follower, ac compressor, and the comforter modular. It cost my ass, at the vw place.
I own a Passat b6 TDI 2008 for over a year and here are the issues I had in the meantime: Dpf Sensor replaced DPF filter blocked EGR valve blocked (built-up carbon deposits) Mounting bar (door - driver side) broken - here is cod if you wonder what it is: 3C0837885H A/C - wasn't cooling and just replaced the solenoid rather than change the whole compressor $$$ things like this won't be a big problem If you are a DIY person, have a couple of good tools and like to spend time in the garage lol. I fixed all of them by myself and saved good money. The service for this car here in Australia is a bit expensive. The shortcoming of owning this car is for simple services I had to buy a different tool such as Socket and join socket to change the engine oil and DSG oil, Spline Socket (EGR valve), socket star e5 (mounting bar) But overall it's a great German Great video dude :)
My 59 reg Passat 2.0tdi 140bhp is booked in for the steering column electric lock to be replaced. The problem is intermittent but want to get it replaced before it gets worse. My air con stopped working 3 years ago and I still haven't got round to repairing it.
Just got a 2006 fsi 2.0t with a low oil pressure light. I'm willing to put some money into this car but am nervous they sound troubling or the problems are reoccurring any thoughts?
Love this video and it was very informative but I was wondering if you could tell me what I need to do about a P0010 code? Intake camshaftp position actuator solenoid control circut.
Hi. We had similar issue with our 2008 BPY on and off for about a year and I replaced the three Teflon rings on the cam adjuster actuator when I replaced my timing chain and tensioner preventatively at 150,000km. It has been good since then. Very inexpensive fix if you are in that area already.
On my 06 Passat 2.0t. I bought a few weeks ago. It was running when I bought it used. Then all of a sudden it stopped. I've replaced my Camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, alternator, battery and coil packs. And I'm about to replace my neutral safety switch. What else could be wrong causing it not to start
I drive a 07 Passat and it “jerks” when shifting into third gear or into reverse. (Auto trans) and I can’t figure out why. I’ve replaced coils, spark plugs, maf sensor, air filter and it continues to jerk. Rpm shoots up sometimes before going going into different gear. Any suggestions on what it can be?
Forgot to mention, it only does this sometimes. Usually at lower rmp/city driving. Sometimes it’s really smooth. This been going on for about 5 months and NOBODY knows what it is
Immoilizer lock. Why didn't you mention to unlock the system all you have to do is depress the shifter know 3 times to release. Take the key out and wait 30 seconds before starting. This happens mostly in hot temperatures.
Just sold my 2003 Passat wagon that made it to 273k problem free miles, now I want to get a B6 wagon for sure, what's the best model year for these cars? Most of the ones I'm looking at are between 07-09
Just bought a 2006 2.0 turbo passat and the first day on the freeway the car stalled on me almost cause a major accident. Anytime I would get on the gas hard it would stall and all kinds of lights came on took it to a mechanic and he told me there was a hole in the vacuum hose putting to much air in the engine hopefully that was the problem because i never had a car stall on me on the freeway. I onwed a 2007 3.5 nissan Altima and never had a problem with it till it got totaled out by a dumbass driver but yeah one day in the passat and yeah not liking it at all miss my Altima
I really enjoy your videos. I would like your opinion. I am looking for a cheap used passat or Jetta for my son and asking for recommendations. Has to be automatic. Thank you!
I would like to see a video with the failures of the passat b7 especially the 2014 I own one of those and so far so good 73k miles on it with 2 mods and it runs fine
@@HumbleMechanic you're right my doors has some issues and I'm about to change the brake disc for an aftermarket brand r1 concepts I been reading and they say they are reliable for the money, after watching your video of cleaning a throttle body i will clean mine , there is any advice you can give me for maintenance of this car ?
My 2010 2.0T Tsi has been a great car. 105xxx miles and I've had to replace the water pump (warrantied) and get the valves decarbonized but that's about it. Had a boost pressure sensor wire fail but that's all I can think of. I'm going to run her until she blows (-: 250k incoming

How has it been?
Scary thing: I have had three out of the five listed that have failed. Luckily one of them, the cam lead and cam shaft, was under warranty. That would've set me back almost $2k at the stealership.
it was creepy watching this video, I had each and every one of those issues. All of them! lol. you my good friend. know your stuff
Damn thats expensive
My 08 BPY
1) regularly replaced the cam follower
2) replaced ignition coils every 100,000 miles
3) yep, had 1 CV boot tear
4) the clutch on my ac compressor seized on mine, where the starter could not overcome the seized compressor

i have steering lock warning, light comes on periodically but does not prevent normal operation. Did urs get progressively worse? I also have no cold AC, if solenoid swap doesn't fix I'll sell it because compressor swap is not worth it.
Yikes, so glad I came across this video while looking at a 2008. I'll steer clear of the B6 as a used car.
Can you add a "symptoms" of the top 5 fails. Especially the AC fail.
Great video! It's hard to tell how reliable these cars are since I see mixed results regarding them. It doesn't help that people with a bad experience are more likely to post about it that people with a good experience. So even though they can get problems, would you call them reliable?
It's rare that people say good thing about cars
If they dont have problems they simply dont search and comment on internet
Top much speak but not show
I own a Passat 2006 and I’m almost at 160k and still running good
Definitely depends on what kinda of engine it has in my opinion.
I need to look up how to adjust those doors, my hinges are squeaky
I wish I knew this video was here before I sold my 06 :'(
Nice to see a video recapping these failures letting me know I'm not the only one.
I'm actually buying a 2006 Passat, and drove beautifully, and repairs are reasonable compared to my Audi A6.
do you still own it?
King Izzy I too would like to know this.
Exactly... when people ask which car is the best I say, if cars didn't have issues they wouldn't have mechanics that specializes in every brand.
I’ve Owned my my 2005 passat since 2010 and it has 230,000 Kms on it.
and I never had one of these issues...maybe it’s just luck. main problem
With mine was the electronic handbrake motor
I'm having a jerky shift in 1st && second gear think it's transmission 😫😓😫😞
Was it the switch? Or a cracked actuator case? Mine has a cracked actuator case and I get the flashing warning light with a dinging while I drive. How do I get rid of that?
meanwhile my passat has 272.000km and runs perfect. 2.0t engine with 6 speed
fmxinsane exactly people don't take care of their car
My 2007 Passat Wagon now has just around 160K miles (~250,000 km), and I just did $1100 worth of repairs. One of the failures was P0304 that HumbleMechanic mentioned, but I didn't see this video before I got it fixed, and the VW dealership didn't mention anything on a recall either. I also got my CV joints replaced back around at 100K miles so I am 2 out of 5 so far. I'm hoping to never face the other 3. =)
right. 207xxx on mines.
you can call VW of America and have them reimburse you.
I can? Interesting. I'll see what I can find out. Thanks.
From your list, I've only experienced worn/torn CV boots...
What I experienced:
1. Carbon Buildup
2. Break Vacuum Leak
3. AC Leak
For the coils packs, I just bought the red coil packs to replace them.
I was going to pick one up.. Not now, insane stuff
Thanks.
NICE!
VR6 man, so u wanna drag race my measly stock FWD 2.0T huh?
@@DigitalDissident something tells me that your 2.0T ain't really stock....but I'll do it!
Thanks for letting me know what to look for and what questions to ask the seller !
Just bought a 2008 VW Passat 2.0t wagon....was helpful for the future.
AWESOME INFO!!!! I'm always lookin for pattern failures to help me diag cars. We see everything in my shop so anything that can save me some time chasing a problem is a great resource.
Thank you. Glad I could help.
Let's see. 08 with 190,000 miles
1. Replaced axles because of boots.
2. Replace cam followers every 15,000 miles. Also fuel psi drops under heavy throttle
3. Steering column lock issues with occasional no start
4. Replaced the solenoid in the ac compressor twice
5. Replaced the electronic parking brake module because of a reoccurring fault. Easier to replace then have the software updated.
6 random led taillight fault.
7. Clear coat is shot
With all this, I still love my car, but would love to trade it in on a CC
Here in Europe B6 are famous with tdi injectors failure (Siemens piezo injector). Also with electric brake failure , And dual mass flywheel problems ... despite all problems it is for me one of the best driving car and good looking
Hi , i m Tech from Lithuania, yours videos helps me a lot to make my job easy everyday . Thanks :D
+Bartautas Švedarauskas awesome! Thank you.
Looking at a b6 1.9 tdi today. Hopefully will be coming home with me 🤞
NICE
A4 Cabriolet B6 BDG 8H7 2.5 V6 Tdi, is my project Car Charles I guess you havn't seen many of these as you guys across the pond like sparkies best. Happy New year to you. Love your videos. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
2007 vw Passat 3.6l oil leak on top of valve cover. Replaced it. Still leaks. Suspecting a bad valve cover.
Alternator Clutch Pulley is very common.
Im looking at a 2011 VW Passat V6 FSI CC Type 3CC MY12 tomorrow
Thanks for this info now i know what to look out for :)
Apparently he said one of the tyre pressure sensors is out and is $150 to fix
Yeah, I really like the idea, I say keep it up!
I'd be interested to see one on MKIV dubs in particular, as I had 2. I put way more labor and money into those 2 cars than every other car combined; they deterred me heavily from buying dubs - probably not forever, but for awhile, so I would be interested in seeing what was considered common issues for them.
Hi @humblemechanic,
Are these 2.0 turbo FSI engines interference engines? In case camshaft timing chain failure will the valves collide with pistons? There is a 06 passat that I'm looking at which timing chain broke. I'd like to know what kind of damage I'm looking at?
Thanks
I love your videos. Informative.
However; as a previous Mark V Golf (Rabbit a la North America) owner and current Toyota driver, I have to ask:
Other than fan folks/enthusiast nuts or first timers with the brand (as I was with my Golf 2.5 5-speed- I read all the Mk IV horror stories and yet STILL took the plunge), who would really buy a VW?
Electronic parking brake warning light wasn’t on the list....Strange?!
I would own a Passat wagon in an instant if I wasn't afraid of an instant $5K repair bill. Sad.
hnkfsh81 learn how to take care of your car
I knew a vw tech, very good one too, and he looked just like you!!!😂
I have a ‘99 with over 300,000 km on it and still going.
Be aware!
B6 sounds like a car to avoid at all costs .. 👍
A/C
Steering lock
Engine issues
What a nightmare
Yeah they were problematic for sure
Make sure nothing is in the 12v outlet.
Doubt it’s a cool issue. Next time check faults before shutting the car off.
Gosh looking at buying a 2009 R32 Passat wagon! Thinking maybe not 😂 is it worth buying it ?
thanks for this informative 👍
Question did the 4 Motion Passat V6 come with the DSG transmission?
The Transporter I would like to know too
intrestesing wel I'm about 188k on my 06 passat with the vr6 fwd and knock on wood the most expensive single item I had to replace was my battery and second was both axles besides that she is still running like a champ and trust me she still have a trick or two up her sleeve when I run up against some of these new turbo cars like ford st and Subaru and even Audi they face start to drop when they see this old girl running them down
Do top 5 B7 passat failures!
b7 is basically a b6 facelift
Hej i just subscribed, got 2006. 2.0 diesel and got. Lots problems with pedal and fuel pump seem loosing power and shut down engine, I start think to change to Volvo
However I love it
I'm looking at a 2010 with 147k miles, it's mint.
That is for sure an issue. Sadly as time goes on the number in this video grows.
Hey it's VW... it could have easily been a top 20 shit that breaks video.
blown head gasket and overheating is common on the Passat.
But it's not
Yes it does
Hi HumbleMechanic,
You seem to know a lot about these cars and as it happens, I've just purchased a VW Passat 2007 Highline 2.0 TFSI.
GREAT STRAIGHT TO THE POINT VIDEO AND THANKS FOR THE CODES......
I'm having trouble with my tailgate/boot lock on my VW Passat 1.9tdi 2006.. It keeps unlocking and locking.. And then doesn't shut at all.. And I've noticed online that other people are having problems too.. Any suggestions..??
I'm having this issue now, it drains my battery, what did you figure out?
Great video!!! Nice to look out for! I just got a nice used one with low miles
lol currently have a inner drivers side boot torn, but ehh, it does not rain much here.
thank god i have not had issues with AC system.
also seen alot of old diverter valves with torn diagrams. had to upgrade that mine had a small leak.
Mines has a oil leak but i can't find out were is it going because i never see it leaking
Hoping to see more b6 2.0t passat content... jus got a wagon that I'm looking to fix up 🤫
Hi humble . I need to replace my steering rack on a 2004 vw beetle 2.0 . While doing so i think i will replace the high and low presure lines plus the pump. Im a skilled dyier Is this a dificult job any tips or thing i should be aware of . Cheers
MKIV! more specifically the VR6 =]
I have 400444 miles on my 2001 VW TDi Jetta. Just bought a 2007 rough running FSI Passat. I hope it will run soon. It is step up in comfort riding with much space rrom.
Ahh my car, thanks for the review. Found it late in my owner ship :P
I have hit all 5 of these. Now I'm hunting down a oil leak.
Still going strong 125k with all major maintenance done. Added a catch can and not consuming all nasty stuff.
It is appreciated!
hey man, love ur VW passion, can't seem to find a problem I have with my 2009 Passat wagon, the electric tailgate doesn't latch all the way so the light stay on. what to do? thanks
I have replaced a few latches, and a few motors for that issues
HumbleMechanic thx
Great idea, do a video on my 2001 VR6 GTI (MK4).
Could you possibly do a video on the same topic for b7 passat
Great idea!!!!
Love your videos this is the same as a eos right
Yes for the engine, like with the Passat, GTI, GLI, and some cars on the Audi side, this was up to about 2008.5.
Sorry I know this video is old but this should be called bpy Passat failures the ccta/cbfa fail very differently as in intake mainfolds, rear main seals, and main drive timing chains, haven't seen a steering lock fail on anything newer than like an 08, fuel pumps still fail but not in the way the bpy did
What about the master cylinder, oilpump, E-brake motors and the tail lights?
Ebrake is the only one I’ve found to be common. But those could also be issues
I have a question,
If i remove the steering column then steering lock / module then refit the steering column minus the steering lock / module will the steering wheel and wheels turn, I need to tow the car from A - B , But the steering is locked
I have a 3.6. Any issues you could tell me about it? Also how can I find out if my steering column was changed. Sometimes when I start the car it cuts off after running for a second
If my fob key won't come out on 2006 passat turbo 4 cylinder do you know if it's ignition switch or steering column
Yeap, mine was the steering wheel lock column, high pressure fuel pump follower, ac compressor, and the comforter modular. It cost my ass, at the vw place.
In the video you mostly have mentioned about the 2 litre diesel, can you tell me what are problems on 1.8tsi petrol?
I own a Passat b6 TDI 2008 for over a year and here are the issues I had in the meantime:
Dpf Sensor replaced
DPF filter blocked
EGR valve blocked (built-up carbon deposits)
Mounting bar (door - driver side) broken - here is cod if you wonder what it is: 3C0837885H
A/C - wasn't cooling and just replaced the solenoid rather than change the whole compressor $$$
things like this won't be a big problem If you are a DIY person, have a couple of good tools and like to spend time in the garage lol. I fixed all of them by myself and saved good money. The service for this car here in Australia is a bit expensive.
The shortcoming of owning this car is for simple services I had to buy a different tool such as Socket and join socket to change the engine oil and DSG oil, Spline Socket (EGR valve), socket star e5 (mounting bar)
But overall it's a great German
Great video dude :)
My b6:Passat is great. My only issue is the dual climate control. The driver side works but the passenger side is stuck on AC even with the heat on.
My 59 reg Passat 2.0tdi 140bhp is booked in for the steering column electric lock to be replaced. The problem is intermittent but want to get it replaced before it gets worse. My air con stopped working 3 years ago and I still haven't got round to repairing it.
Mine has no cold AC, it also has steering lock warnings randomly. I didn't see a recall for that on the NHTSA, did you get yours fixed?
Just got a 2006 fsi 2.0t with a low oil pressure light. I'm willing to put some money into this car but am nervous they sound troubling or the problems are reoccurring any thoughts?
step one on this.. pull oil pan and inspect.
@@HumbleMechanic okay will do
How do you properly apply sealer to camshaft retainer? How much and where to lay bead ? Please help !!!!!
Love this video and it was very informative but I was wondering if you could tell me what I need to do about a P0010 code? Intake camshaftp position actuator solenoid control circut.
could be a timing issue, could be oil pressure issue, could be wiring. Depends on the engine. But this could be a serious issue for sure.

It's a 08 VW Passat 2.0T BPY
This been going on for about 5 months and NOBODY knows what it is
I have mine sitting in the drive with a fuel issue....... lucky I have a backup car till I can afford to fix it
Immoilizer lock. Why didn't you mention to unlock the system all you have to do is depress the shifter know 3 times to release. Take the key out and wait 30 seconds before starting. This happens mostly in hot temperatures.
I like this idea! Really enjoyed this episode
Just sold my 2003 Passat wagon that made it to 273k problem free miles, now I want to get a B6 wagon for sure, what's the best model year for these cars? Most of the ones I'm looking at are between 07-09
+Barley Mow I'd look for an09 with the updated timing chain tensioner
Just bought a 2006 2.0 turbo passat and the first day on the freeway the car stalled on me almost cause a major accident. Anytime I would get on the gas hard it would stall and all kinds of lights came on took it to a mechanic and he told me there was a hole in the vacuum hose putting to much air in the engine hopefully that was the problem because i never had a car stall on me on the freeway. I onwed a 2007 3.5 nissan Altima and never had a problem with it till it got totaled out by a dumbass driver but yeah one day in the passat and yeah not liking it at all miss my Altima
What other issues have you had with the Passat?
I really enjoy your videos. I would like your opinion. I am looking for a cheap used passat or Jetta for my son and asking for recommendations. Has to be automatic.
Thank you!
I would like to see a video with the failures of the passat b7 especially the 2014 I own one of those and so far so good 73k miles on it with 2 mods and it runs fine
They have been pretty good. Most common things are radio issues, door latches and super soft brakes rotors
@@HumbleMechanic you're right my doors has some issues and I'm about to change the brake disc for an aftermarket brand r1 concepts I been reading and they say they are reliable for the money, after watching your video of cleaning a throttle body i will clean mine , there is any advice you can give me for maintenance of this car ?
i think you forgot to mention the intake manifold issue.
+Adysh Ramzi I did. It's funny when I did the video, I was not even thinking about the CCTA engines. There will be plenty more :)
Sent you an email with a question i needed help with ..
Adysh Ramzi
Just change my intake manifold and coil packs on 2012 Passat epc light on and car shaking
thank you!
My B6 currently has a inner CV boot tear, but I've been told the inner boot is protected buy a cover so im not sure how it got the tear.
Inner boot tears happen, the are just not as common. You still want to get it fixed or DIY.
@humblemechanic - trying to find the video of your VCDS timing chain measurement and your guides on when too much is dangerous!
