    The Thomas and Thomas Sextant is an incredibly accurate, easy casting, and formidable saltwater fly rod. It has an excellent finish, has proved itself to be reliable, and is quite pleasant to cast for a rod capable of heavy lifting, big distance, and tossing weighted flies into the wind.

    Great review! I have had similar experiences with the rod and all of your recommendations seem spot on.

    Joe has the most natural "Saltwater cast" of any westerner I've ever seen, period. Guys from Florida will know exactly what i mean, it looks liks he grew up doing it.

    Hi,
    I search a rod for carp fishing in small rivers and I make a cast only at 10 feet or 20feet only i'm always under the 40 feet cast, this rod is nice for small distance cast? Which line are good for small distance, I probably take the 7wt I think 8wt it's more heavier for small fish..

    Also thank you for venturing out of the 5wt and 8wt reviews. It's hard to find info on 9wt and up rods anywhere.

    I am interested in buying a saltwater rod for the east coast striper fishing. Think heavy lines into 20+mph winds. Would you recommend the T&T offerings? Like this or the Exocett? What rod would have the power to do this? I have an Orvis H2 9wt and it’s just ok. Gets difficult in a really stiff wind to handle the heavy lines needed to push a cast out past 40-50ft. I am looking for an upgrade. Thx

    Are you going to do a OSG Clearwater review now that they're being stocked again?

      I will try, we have sold almost every one of them (we may have one in stock, but that's it). Because of the shortage I haven't been able to pull one out of inventory for testing.

    Does the 9 wt have a tip flex flats taper, or is strong enough in the tip section to lift sunken lines for boat fishing?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, I haven't fished a sinking line on it so I can't say but you bring up a good point. Rods that will lift and rocket a sunken sinking line back out of the water for an aggressive pick up and re-cast are always the best rods for flats fishing. My gut tells me this wouldn't be the best rod for that job, I'll likely be taking my NRX+ rods for sinking lines and Roosterfish this summer.

      I have compared the sextant 9wt to the salt hd 9wt in a homemade taper observation jig. (I basically just made something to hold the handle and hang a weight off the tip tip guide) The sextant 9wt is much more of a tip flex rod with a stiff and noticeably fatter butt section than the salt hd. The salt hd has more flex into the butt with more feel and also handles a rio flats pro amazingly. The salt hd 9wt has been my goto for stripers with sinking lines. The Sextant on the other hand throws a permit taper 70 feet with very little effort and tighter loops into the wind for me. When you get the rhythm down with the sextant it seems like all reasonable fishing distances are easy to reach. Hope this helps

      Recently I took out a nrx+ 990 and it is a match made in heaven with a outbound short and large clouser. I think Joe is right on to say it is better for sinking lines. 100%

    Hi Joe! I've just got a T&T sextant 8wt... and i'd like to fish in Argentina for golden dorados (warm water) and big trouts (cold water). Which lines do you suggest? Specially for fresh water (big 20lb trouts). I can not find line recommendations online for freshwater for this rod!! Thanks in advance, Javi!

      I would suggest the warmwater predator line from RIO, for the Golden D's redsflyfishing.com/products/rio-elite-warmwater-predator

      For the cold stuff, try this. redsflyfishing.com/products/rio-elite-predator-streamer-line

      @@redsflyshop thank you so much, one last question: do you think it'd be a good idea to overline (9wt) these rio predators lines? or regular 8wt will be better for my use. Thanks again!

    This is perhaps an untapped video market for 9wt to 12wt rod reviews

    Why cast with a 10wt, are rod makers misleading us. does that mean the 10 would cast better with an 11 an so on.

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. No I don't think anyone is misleading, mismatching is a tool available to the angler. It's like shooting a heavier arrow through a bow. For some situations that might be a better choice. An "overlined" rod will load up very easy at close range and flex the rod. Casters that are primarily working 15-40' might do better with a rod that is overlined. Other casters with either the ability to cast further, OR the need would be better served with a true match. Like 9 on 9, or 10 on 10. A 10 weight line on a 9 weight rod beyond 40-50' will be sluggish and not perform as well.
