We have concrete steps leading to the back yard with a drain also. We have alot of grubs (no grass until you get to the top of the 3 steps. We definitely have a grub problem every day Grubs are grass and lawn only so why are we getting this in the concrete section of our steps which is concrete all on the sides and steps as well as the bottom. Its crazy

I had a major grubb infestation. 1 shovel full could have dozens. I put down a heavy bifenthrin granual base which killed them, but now I wonder if it also killed the earthworms. I had them also in much less concentration. Can you kill grubs and not earthworms? The problem with the grubs, in addition to killing grass, was when they hatched into beetles. They'd be out by the 100's and then the scorpions were attracted to the beetles.

Grub control is primarily done in the summer months between late May and late August as this is when the majority of their life cycle and feeding occurs. If you were to put anything down now to kill the grubs it would need to be something like Dylox in granule or liquid form to act as a contact kill. Earthworms could be controlled by a general insecticide such as a bifenthrin granule or the Dylox if it got deep enough into the soil where they were present, and if it were able to penetrate through their slimy coating. You could potentially only kill the grubs during feeding season of June/July by using a product like Merit G which absorbs into the grass that the grubs feed on.

Do the products that claim to require only one application per year (i.e Scotts) really work?

Most grub control products can be used only once per year because they contain imidacloprid, which will have annual maximum rates. These products can be very effective when used at the right time. We recommend consulting with your local Cooperative Extension for assistance with the best time to apply for grub control in your area.
