I've been on China's High Speed Rail from Beijing to Shanghai (clock speed at 345kph). I've also been on USA's AmTrak from Boston to New York City, with an average speed of 80kph (it had to slow down at many turns ... top speed at 120kph ... but only for short runs). There is no comparison. China's HSR Trainports are like International Airports. USA had dirty, poorly lit train stations, and the AmTrak was clackerty-clack all the way (HSR, you could not feel any vibration at all).

When Singapore partner China for the Suzhou Industrial Park in 1992 it is intended to be a development demonstration project and not meant to make money out of it.
Thus out of padi fields and lotus ponds in west Suzhou the industrial estate was developed with the bulk of the financing and staff coming from Singapore and eventually this completed project was "sold/return" back to China.
As someone senior in the know told me it is a "national service", not because it is "not profitable".
