Interviewer: Now we have 2 of the main actors here. Warm welcome to Alexander Skarsgård and Gustav Lindh.
Alex: Thank you very much (literally: 1000 thanks) Gustav: Thanks so much. Interview: I saw this film on Friday, wow, overwhelming and I had trouble letting the movie go in long time afterwards. Gustav: Awesome. Interviewer: How does it feel for you, now the World premiere is fast approaching? Alex: It feels.. ehm.. it feels fantastic, it feels like after many many years finally is releasing this film on the world. Its emotional and not really exalted, but its alot of mixed feelings. Interviewer: Can you tell about the movie? It was an idea from you the whole movie got made? Alex: No I can't take the whole credit for it. But I always had a boyhood dream of making an epic viking film about or close to the icelandic sagas in theme and story, that goes many years back. So when I met Robert Eggers in a different context and we started talking about the Vikings and a little Nordic Mythology and it was apparent that Robert was a big fan of the Era. I had just seen his first film The Witch (2015) which I thought was fantastic, and he was just started making his next movie The Lighthouse (2019). We should have talked about a different film project but ended up spending 2 hours talking about Vikings instead. Afterwards I went to a danish producer Lars Knudsen, whom I had talked warm on the idea. I said Robert was my dream / first choice of a director on a viking film. Interviewer: So you pitched the movie for Robert? Gustav: Yeah, he spend 2 hours piching the movie. Alex: (Laughing) Yeah it was a long pitching session. Interviewer: What I was impressed by is the enormous effort you did for the movie, you are in almost every scene of the film. Alex: I just want to clarify I did not pitch this exact story for Rob (Robert Eggers). We talked quite loose about what type of film or what type of story we wanted to tell. We did not really pinpoint what story. We wanted to make a big and epic film with, but the icelandic saga is quite compact and concise storytelling. It often revolves around family drama, homestories and takes place on a farm. So we played around with different ideas, on how you could combine the big and magnificent and keep the intensity and the peeled down quality of the icelandic sagas. So then Rob together with Sjón, who is an icelandic novelist and poet, and a real renaissance man. He has frequently collaborated with the singer Björk. They wrote the manuscript for the film. Interviewer: We cant spoil too much of the film, but you play the cousin of Alexanders character in the film, Gustav, and role Alex's real brother should have played.
Gustav: Yes. Precisely so I was. It went really fast. Bill Skarsgård could not film and then I was "the right guy at the right time" It feels super nice. Bill is the greatest, I would love to take his future roles. Interviewer: You have made many films in Sweden, but this is your first Hollywood production? Gustav: God, Yes. It was the big fanfare (literally "big drums") who played, more spectacle than you are used to. It was really lovely. It was a weird time, it was 2020 when we filmed it, and it was in the middle of the pandemic and I was really nervous on how it should go, and it was a really big production. So we met up in the studio in Belfast and got a big warm hug and then everything seemed like it was going to be all right. Its weird being in a movie this big in scale and budget. So when you make your scenes you really make your scenes. So you just have to stay super focused on the acting job and the situations and get the work done. Interviewer: Is there moments where you have to pinch your arm and say is this real? Aboslute. We had time to prepare on how Vikings lived and riding horses and Rob is very correct on the historical things. So we had much to learn. So it was very much a vibe. So when you stood on set and saw all the attention to detail there was in everything. It was a joy to see. Alex: We filmed under the pandemic, it had just started and we filmed in Northern Ireland and a little bit on Iceland, but mainly Northern Ireland. Everything was closed down, so we were in a bubble. We spent months on the set. Only to go home and sleep. Normally you would atleast have a little tentacle out in the real world, you can to a restaurant or fly home to the family. Here we were totally isolated. We were gracious and overjoyed to finally film this. We were going to start filming in March 2020 when everything closed down, and then we spent five months to figure out how you could safely film. It took five month to get a system working. And Gustav could jump in and take over for Bill and we were glad to get going and make the film. I think we were the first bigger budget project to get in production. So it was a little like a guinea pig, where the other studios watched us on how you could film with this many people in this exact situation. Gustav: It was mission impossible. It was really a logistical effort. Alex: Yes. There were little bubbles in the big bubble. So people had different colored vest on set. So like "Green vest do this job and they get out to make clear for the the next crew". We had a couple of false positive, but no one got sick doing the filming.
Interviewer: You had this enormous transformation to play this character. I called it Tarzan meets Bear. You look like you are going to jump out of the screen and wreck havoc on the theater. You must've been exausted after the filming, because its long sequences? Alex: It was Rob's idea to make long continuous scenes. In other films you have more cameras and more angles to cut together the action sequences. Here we shot big scens with 200 extras, 50 stuntmen and horses. And is there a little thing in those 3 minutes that doesnt work, you have to start all over, you cant just save it by inserting a clip from another angle or a close-up of a axe swing. That was hard. Gustav: I stood mostly and observed you. Alex: You stood and humiliated me. Gustav: (laughing) Yes precisely. Alex: Thorir the Proud Gustav's character. I play as a slave and there is a lot of humiliation from Thorir the Proud. Gustav: I was so highly impressed by you. I had trouble just staying warm. And not freeze to death. And see you, just film, take after take, after take. Alex: And then you got to whisper something cruel and humiliating into my ears. Interviewer: Where do you get the strenght to do that? Not only physical but also psychical, to keep filmig take after take? Alex: It was a motivated by my dream of making a Viking film. And when you are standing there with the, in my mind, best director in the world. And a fantastic crew. And to get to make this great story. It hurt afterwards. It was willpower. But the people around you means so much, it was a really good crew. We worked in mentally and physically hard times and it snowed. But with a good direcctor and a great crew you can go far. Gustav: I hope to work with good jobs like these, with great directors, I think film is a directors medium and Robert Eggers is a dream to work with. Its hard to be an actor, you have to be invited to the dance, so I just take one day at a time. Interviewer: What next? Alex: Tomorrow is the first premiere the galla premiere of The Northman (2022) in Stockholm. Interviewer: Its the World Premiere! Alex: Yes. And on tuesday I go on tour to do press for the film so the next month is going to be a lot of Viking talk. This is the first interview on the film, it feels really cool to be home and get your family to see the film first. So we have to thank you for this. Gustav: We WILD-ly thank you. Alex: We WILD-ly thank you.
