So people always ask why do the Japanese use chimes instead of a bell
Because people wanted more better-sounding chimes than formerly used noisy ones.
Right after the WWII, the chime in Japanese schools was the siren used to notify people of air raid. Many students complained it reminded them of bitter memories of getting bombed. Some schools used fire alarm bell to tell the beginning and end of classes but there were teachers who found it loud.
Then a inventor 石本邦雄 (Kunio Ishimoto) started selling a device which rang Westminster chimes in 1954. He often listened to BBC radio broadcast where the melody was often heard. He thought it was melodious and stylish so he adopted it.

This tune brings back memories only because my grandpa built a clock in 1957 with a VERY identical tune. But every hour the amount of dings they go off changes. As in if it's 1am or pm it only sounds once, if it's 2 am or pm, it sounds twice, if it's 12 at night it dings 12 times then goes to almost a gong sound and goes off 12 times if I'm correct. Ill try to give you a clear image of the sound in your head:
Imagine that tune in the video, but slightly sped up, and sounds a bit like...... Its obviously much quieter, and the dings for the first 12 times don't sound so much like gongs,. They sound more like an OLD Canadian house in the middle of nowhere with cornstarch ceilin' and cobwebs everywhere even though someone lives there,. And I don't mean the cracks of the Canadian summer heat getting to the walls, I mean you look at the house and imagine a few different tunes. Now obviously you won't hear the tune I do when you think of the house because I'm not good with description and you most likely never EVER seen his house even if you live near smithers, British Columbia Canada

there is something about it that sounds nostalgic, its like it brings back those memories that you forget around the time you start school, ironically.

It's called "Westminster Quarters." Fun fact: Japan is not the only country that plays this as their school bell. I attended a private elementary school in the Philippines from 1990-1998, and they use this sound to indicate recesses and end of class as well. I believe Taiwan also uses this bell sound at their schools... that's why it came as a culture shock for me when I moved to the U.S. 12 years ago and heard the loud American RIIIIIIIIIIIING. LOL.

I will always remember that one spring day when I was in Japan. Staying with a friend in a town around an hour train ride from downtown Tokyo. I was sleeping in one morning when I heard a distance sound of a school playing this tune over their loudspeakers. For a short second made me feel like I was in an anime ngl. Hearing that made my day. With it also being a nice day and during sakura season which made it perfect.
