    The art is about the relationship. She disappeared into the relationship, then discovered that he was hung up on someone else. As such, she pushed him into the background and found herself again. HE was the problem, and now his feelings are hurt. And while agree, ghosting him was cold, he shouldn't have got with the new girl when he was still hung up on the old one. Choices!

    • @connect2reality
      @connect2reality 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      I took it more as he's a narcissist and at least emotionally abusive. To the point that she had to cut off contact with him by changing her number and having someone else collect her stuff so she wouldn't have to see him again. Throughout the song he tells her how little he cares about her leaving while also how hurt he is by her leaving, both emotional manipulations of making her feel worthless and making himself the victim. So after telling her how little she matters to him, she leaves and becomes someone that he used to know, and he's still hung up on her. So even though he said he wouldn't be hung up on her if she left, after she does so, he continues to paint the story of he being the one wronged. Even when she screams into his ear about how much he wronged her, he refuses to acknowledge her, only looking in her direction when she refuses to be a part of his painting in leaves. Even then, he doubles down and continues to say the same excuses.

      @@connect2reality spot on. it took me a while to realize that he really comes off as a loser in this one. The 'he' of course being the protagonist of the song, rather than Gotye himself. Very brave artistically to write this song and be the villain in it. Too many people are probably not sophisticated enough to separate the artist from the character doing the narration.

    Fantastic video. Know his name but not much about him. So thought I’d looked him up. Gotye (Wouter "Wally" De Backer (born 21 May 1980 in Bruges, Belgium). But now lives in Melbourne Victoria Australia, where I live lol. He even went to the same high school as my son, but a few years older than my son. Omg lol, we lived in the same suburb in Melbourne. I’ve moved from there now but a Lovely spot with a close knit shopping centre and community. Weird, I only wanted to know where he was born with his unique unusual name. His mother nicknamed him "Gotye", based on "Gauthier", the French equivalent of his Flemish first name. His parents chose to use the English equivalent of his name, Walter, when enrolling him in school.
    Sorry, I got carried away reading about him lol😊

    @Ashley-tw6ho หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Hi there! I'm Ashley from Alabama and I'm 37 years old and a new subscriber.
    I enjoyed y'all's reaction alot. I always find it entertaining when this younger generation reacts to music back when I was a kid or teenager.
    I'm an '80s baby so of course I love a lot of '80s music. But I grew up through the '90s and the '90s was the last best decade in my opinion. Even my mother-in-law and others much older than me say as much.
    And there was so many awesome bands and songs and movies and shows that I still love and go back and watch or listen to today.
    Though I will say there was a lot of great songs in the early 2000s. But I'm a singer and a musician and I come from a family of generations of singers a musicians. And I have a wide variety of love for many different genres in music. Of course I was raised up on older classic country and '90s country music which was awesome, Southern Gospel, Pop, Hard Rock and I loved 90s R&B.
    If I ever want to go back to the days when you actually had to have God Given raw talent without the assistance of Auto-Tune or other technologies in order to make you sound great and I go back To my own personal experiences and the concerts I went to as a kid in teenager and I saw a lot of great country singers that were legends and they were nothing but pure talent and they didn't lip sink or use Auto-Tune.
    But even more amazing, The farther back you go in time to my mother's time in the 1950s and 1960s when she was a teenager, And you listen to songs like unchained Melody the live performance by the Righteous Brothers and you see the hardcore pure talent and how they were able to sing a song all in one take without any mistakes. It's just fascinating. So I encourage you to keep diving into not only my generation of music in the '80s and '90s and early 2000s when I was a kid in teenager but also dive deeper into the past and you will be truly amazed even more so.
    But speaking of the band Gotye, the way you pronounce it is the following fast and all together... GO--TEE--YAY.
    I hope that helps.
    In 2001 when I was 14 years old, De Backer recorded his first tracks primarily using samples. He put together a four-track CD which included the song "Out Here in the Cold". He made approximately 50 copies of this first collection, handwriting the track list and colouring in the cover sleeve in pencil. He named the project Gotye.
    The song, "Some body I Used To Know" was the second single from Gotye's third studio album, Making Mirrors, released by Eleven Music on 5 July 2011. 'Somebody That I Used to Know' was written and recorded by Gotye at his parents' house on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula and draws on his relationship experiences.
    And I just have to say that since I was old enough to remember 9/11 and how things were back then. I will say that even though we were all devastated about what happened and terrified and our hearts were going out to those that were being rescued by brave men, I have to say that to see so many people in the boat lift offer help to get the people off the island was truly amazing. I hope that y'all will react to the boat theft story of accounts of people who were rescuing the people who were trying to get away after the towers collapsed. I will say that there was a greater sense of unity in America back then and people weren't as easily offended or cold-hearted back then. A lot has changed in that time and not all for the better. Social media has been a huge downfall for a lot of people especially the youth who are exposed to so much more. But there is so much more division nowadays and people so easily offended that it truly breaks my heart.
    I see a lot of the division more so on TV or on the internet and in my travels sometimes. But living here in the south, I feel that we will be the last to truly turn cold.
    I'm still able to speak to a random stranger in a grocery store and have a lively conversation and nine times out of 10 I'm going to run into a Christian who also loves Jesus which is always nice. I love being around so many people who have good hospitality and good manners and love Jesus unashamedly. But I cannot help but notice that more and more people from the north are moving here to the south. It's like they've truly discovered that things aren't exactly as they imagined they are even better than they imagined.
    For example, I have several friends that has moved to Alabama from up north in other states or out west. And one of my newest friends for the past 6 months who moved from Chicago Illinois to be closer to her boyfriend she met online and fell in love with here in Alabama and soon will be marrying. She absolutely loves it down here. She said that the people are so much more nicer even on the streets than what they are up north. She likes the fact that since she too is a Christian that she can run into multiple people in a grocery store or in a shop and talk to people and hear them share about their love for their state and any history or attractions that they might point out to her or great places to eat or great church to go to. A lot of the times they have a lot of love to share about Jesus and she absolutely loves that.
    She said it's like a whole another world down here. A better one. There is more love going around, love for Jesus, love for your neighbor, love for those in need that she said back home she felt was truly lacking. In fact, all the stories she's been telling her family has truly touched them back home in Chicago and they are all planning to move down here as well.
    I'm sure there's other places that has communities that are tight nit and are always there for one another. But here in the southern states it is far more common. But based on my friends from up north account and my own personal travels I cannot help but agree that whatever unity we still have and love we have for others here in the south will spread on out to the north and others.
    My friend from Chicago's mother talked about the boat left and how people came together in New York City and other places. But people were different back then and I hope that we can get past a lot of this division and it wouldn't take something so drastic to unify us again. But back when I was a teenager It felt like the United States had all United and became one big huge heart that each of us shared a part of. And it seems that over the years it's been broken and separated apart so gradually at first and then overnight it seemed we were divided again. Unless you were there to live through it I'm sure you don't understand what I'm talking about but believe me, how it is now is not how it should be. It used to be better. And I hope and pray for the love and unity to come back for us all.

    Their voices blend together so ridiculously well. It's indefinable, what it is about this song that hits so hard with everyone. Relatable lyrics with at least one unreliable narrator...sure, but not groundbreaking. The drama of dynamics...again, a classic. The way I always interpreted this video is that in the relationship he stopped seeing her as a person. She faded into the background. She became part of the furniture, just another thing in his house. Something else he owned. Then she broke away from the relationship and he faded into her background. Then he felt unseen, like she was to him. And he realized what he did and suddenly he saw her as a person again. She was no longer part of the background. But it was too late.

      I think that view is charitable to him. The relationship didn't work out, and that's fine. She certainly seems to have her reasons for not wanting to be in the relationship. But he needs to let it go. Even if he realizes he did wrong after the fact, he seems to be playing the victim and it is not an attractive trait.
