Hey! I'm Alanna - a thirty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a TH-cam video every Tuesday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Hi Alanna, as a Brit who used to work in Bath but who now lives in PEI Canada I very much enjoyed your trip to the city. I did want to point out that you actually "had a bit of a moment "in the Circus rather than the Royal Crescent which is just around the corner from the Circus. Next time you visit you will have something more to discover. Keep up the good work.

Always love your “unscripted” videos, Alanna! Bath is a beautiful and historic city, and one of my favorite places to visit when I’m visiting the UK. Two of the more unique visits were chaperoning a group of 10th-12th grade girls (as a +1, my wife was in charge) on an exchange trip from New Jersey and spending a summer sabbatical at Bath University in the early ‘90s learning about the (then) new National Curriculum.

Well as someone who lives near bath can tell you it can be nice, it can also get crowded at times such as Easter, summer, and at Christmas (especially when the Christmas market is running). But it also have some beautiful places to visit such as the Roma baths and the park. It’s a great place for shopping with shops for all price ranges.

I've been there - I studied at Bath University back in the 70's. Seeing your video with all the lovely clean yellow stone facades really brings back memories of this special city. When I was there, many of the buildings were still black - something to do with the chemicals in coal smoke and acid rain, I think. They used scaffolds supporting dozens of constantly running water running down the stonework to clean them all off. So when it wasn't actually raining, the streets were always wet nevertheless.
Lovely to see it all finished and beautiful. And to see you having a good tie there too. Stay cool.

    • @markhorton8578
      @markhorton8578 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The Coal gas works stopped operation in the 70's. That produced huage amounts of sulphur dioxide and other nasty stuff, plus all the coal fires turned the buildings black. Most have been cleaned up, but over the years just the rain has done a lot of cleaning too. To remind yourself of what colour most buildings were, go to the back of pultney bridge (upstream) and look underneath the overhang were the rain does not wash it off. (nearly black)

Been to Bath several times and commuted through it a bunch more - I used to live in Bournemouth and spent 18mths working in Birmingham, Cheshire and Manchester. The quickest route is usually cross-country to Bath, then up the M5 & M6, every Sunday night and Friday afternoon. Lovely city, even when you're stuck in traffic!

Alanna - "Hey guys, look where we are..."
Me - "Ooh! The Circus! I haven't been there for years!"
Alanna - "... We're at the Royal Crescent..."
    Me - "Bloody Foreigners... 😝"
Seriously though, The Royal Crescent is west, along the next road. It's kinda crescent shaped....? The architecture isn't too dissimilar though... Except, you know, *not* a circle...
I love Bath, grew up in the city. Kinda miss the place... 😔

I'm someone who went to school in Bath so it's great to see you enjoying the city! I sang in a choir in Bath Abbey, walked to school past so many of the places you showed in the video, and spent a lot of my free time there as well. I have to admit, I haven't been there for some time even though I live nearby (too crowded and expensive unfortunately, and parking is a nightmare) but I spent a lot of time looking at shops and saying "that used to be a Sainsburys" or "that used to be a Pizza Hut".
Glad you enjoyed yourself, drop by again soon!

Try parking in Preston, the mother of all nightmares. Bath is a great place and the two do not compare. Preston has a one way system that is confusing and various pay and display car parks that are restricted to certain users, such as employees of particular organisations. It also has complicated rules around bus lanes and bus gates, and thousands of drivers have been issued PCNs for parking and driving infringements that in many cases will be inadvertent due to the complexity of the rules. It must be bad enough for residents or commuters familiar with the place but for visitors it is beyond belief.

Hey, it's my hometown - glad you enjoyed the trip - Bath looks absolutely spectacular in the sunshine because of the use of the local sandstone in practically every building. We enjoyed our visit to Bath. My wife and I took a 21 day driving tour of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales! Such a beautiful countries. The people were so wonderful to us because our trip started two days into the atrocity on September 11...our 911. I'm too old to travel now, but I must admit I like the way Alanna covers the country! Oh, and by the way, the Canadians are among the nicest people in the world also. Interesting observation about England, though: I've noticed in those TH-cam walks through London that so few British women wear lipstick in public unlike American women.

Thought I'd be able to just wander in, but having got there was told most people book online. I've been to Bath many times although it must be 10 years or so since the last time that I visited. Now days it's best visited by public transport as the traffic can be a nightmare and there is a low emissions charge for some vehicles. It's a beautiful city with a ton of history though and I highly recommend a visit. Alanna you summed it up very well, the Roman Baths are definitely worth seeing but think twice before deciding on tasting the spring water. It's a brilliant place to wander around and take in all of those old views of the buildings and get a huge coffee in the many cafes.

You mentioned a few times you were with a bunch of friends, but I never saw anyone - you were lying on the grass at one point, but I wondered if you were smoking it 😂Ha Ha, just kidding, I'm sure you and the girls had an awesome time

Used to work a couple of days a week in Bath, the hour long commute was a pain from South Wales. The major advantage- they paid London wages and the extra £6 per hour 30 years ago was very useful.

I have been to Bath more times that I can remember. To my knowledge those apartments in the Circle cost £5m.
Do book onto Bizarre Bath tour and Bad of Bath Tour.

8:10 yes, I've been in Bath many times.
I lived most of my life in Keynsham, which is just outside Bath.
I went to college in Bath, I'm not a city person, but Bath is definitely the nicest city I've ever been too. Maybe only beaten by Edinburgh, but I've only spent one day there.

Alanna, please come to Dorset! My Canadian cousin came a while ago and she couldn't believe how beautiful our view is.. and she lives in British Columbia.. I think she was under the impression that the whole country looked like Coronation street!!
PS. you cannot go anywhere here without evidence of thousands of years of history... if you are into that sort of thing...
PPS. Obviously I am British.. and as you say.. weird.. but I have to say that YOU ARE AWESOME!!

There is a place there called The Stable! Sells pizza a pies....and cider! When I went there last, it was 80 ciders! Not sure they have as much these days

Thank the Algorithm for bringing you to my home page. Honestly, the second video I've seen, and I love your content so far. The editing, pacing and just general tone are such a nice little bright light, in an otherwise slightly dreary world.
Also - love that the second video to come up is you visiting somewhere I'm lucky enough to go almost every month ( it's about 15 minutes by train for me ). But also, where I'm from, we pronounce it "Barth" 😂 and we get judged every time.
Loving the work, keep it going😊

My son got married at the bath's, next to the main pool. Also had great bus tour of the city. Must return sometime.

When you took the spring water at The Roman Baths/Pump Room, I both knew you wouldn't like it and the foul, warm taste and smell of sulphur (eggs) came back to me...yuck!
Loved my visits to Bath and although it's been a while now recognised lots of places.

Hey, really enjoyed this! Visited Bath on my first (and so far only) visit to the UK about 15 years ago, doing all the tourist stuff: the baths and museum, Bath Abbey, sampled the mineral water at the Pump Rooms. Pigs! Do they still have all the little pig 'statues' there? Any, really enjoy these little day/weekend trip videos.
