I remember when my highschool band played this the year of 06-07 that was my freshman year and the last year that those particular band directors were there....memories are attached to this song and i miss them so much
I want to thank everyone who has commented on our music. It really means a lot to the NBHS band. I've been meaning to post sooner, but school has kept me busy. Anyway, thanks everyone! :)
We played this for UIL. It was really hard, but such a gorgeous song.... This band did REALLY well on this.... Clarinets are awesome :) And the trumpets sound so good on high Bb....
this is by far my favorite piece of all time. this is a very good recording of it. were playing it for our spring concert on the 15th. along with all 3 movement of Third Suite and Sevens (without a conductor on sevens ;) )
The euphoniums were gorgeous, my band is trying this out and it is extremely beautiful...we can't wait until we master this, it's gonna take some practicing but I believe we can do it. (:
i learned the choral version and just loved it hearing it with a full band arrangement is almost as fullfilling. Great interpretation excellent performance
wow..my band performed this song to. along with j'ai ete. this piece is so beautiful. so many different ways to perform it. and so much breath support. and if you don't have strong chops...then psh. lol kudos.
@JuergenALange If you've ever actually played this piece, you'd know that those breaks are actually written in. There are multiple fermatas throughout it.
Thanks, but something to keep in mind is that art is subjective and it was our stylistic choice to play the piece that way. Not every piece has to be played continuous and I think all the breaths we took were perfectly placed.
Earlier this year, my high school symphonic band had the honor of H. Robert Reynolds coming in and conducting us for 2 hours (by the way, he is a prime conductor of the world today) We worked on this piece, which he arranged. It was truly amazing to be playing under his hand. We proceeded to tour France last summer. Playing this piece in the Chartres Cathedral was the most humbling, out-of-this-world experience ever. The Cathedral had this heavenly aura, and some in the audience even teared up.
The Euphoniums did a great job with that high A...when I played it I felt the blood rushing to my head & nearly exploded, but I also have braces, so it's harder anyway!
@YamezOozuts I know you wrote that comment half a year ago, but it's worth mentioning that this was originally a gregorian chant, and those holes are meant to be there. I played this song in band, and it's definitely one of the most difficult due to the phrasing, and those breaks are certainly welcomed. Also, I think the rests cause a more triumphant feel. But that's more of an opinion. Still a lovely piece after all these years.
This is beautiful. Its really one of those pieces you have to absolutely feel. We're playing it for our Spring Concert, and taking it to Concert Festival, and also playing it ay graduation with all our upper groups. This was performed amazingly, especially that grand crescendo at fifty one it think? Amazing. And yea, those breaths are hard to make.
idk. i think either way is good. my band has tried it both ways.... and i personally see the breath as something wonderful. i see this image of this man proclaiming his love and he takes a breath to recollect his thoughts... idk. that's just my opinion. i like it both ways...as long as everyone breathes together. which they did. :)
Yea i agree the 3:55 cuts that moment of glory and emotion but overall I got the goose-bumps so it means it was played well :D love those french horns so beautiful
I've listened to this song 20+ and I still get chills every time. No song has ever done that expect this one. Absolutely magnificent.
I cry every time this senior in my class does... imá miss him and his brother next year :(

Yeah! Go, go, horns!! Alexyaden could not have said it better: nothing like a HUGE horn sound!

@Fhorn23 It is such a gorgeous piece, indeed. I hope you guys had a wonderful performance! :)
I actually like the phrasing; it's dramatic.

@ShortestShowShown Yeah i had a tad bit of trouble hitting the high A, but i managed to get it lol.

Playing percussion in the song kind of sucks... but its a really awesome piece anyways!
