first time I saw this piece in honor band.... "DANG." ..... first time I listened to this on youtube.. " OH MY HECK WHAT." (I played 2nd clarinet, part was still insane..) amazing though
i love this song!!! i first heard it about 2 years ago when our across town high school marching band, anderson highland, played at state fair. and they won. i have been tryna hear this song ever since. its simply amazing!!!
We played that at our competition at the east central college in union Missouri and we got a one ( superior). I love this song. I really like our high school symphonic band. We are from Rolla, MO.
I just played this a week ago at UoP graduation with our combined band and wind ensemble. So much fun to play. I totally killed that double tonguing section near the end.
to me.. all of samuel hazo's songs song alike but they are all unique and i like playing the ones i played like ride and sevens and hearing the others..
This piece asks too much of an oboist. As one myself, many of the notes in the runs are impossible to play that fast. The fingerings are way too difficult.
Sorry I couldn't ask him for you. My band got to meet him in person once at a concert dedicated to him. We got one of his songs signed which hangs on our band's wall.
@narutofreak774 The majority of the piece is in 7/4 time, however it starts off switching between 4/4 and 3/4, and also towards the end where it goes to half time feel it is 3/4.
I used to love this song. It was so powerful and amazing. Unfortunately I HATED my part. (I was 2nd Clarinet at the time, so we played ALL of those fast moving parts.)
Don't you guys know the story behind this song? It's pretty funny. North Texas' Wind Ensemble told him they could read any song and play it perfect the first time through...and he made this. Rumor has it that they got it near perfect on the 2nd time, though 0.0
I'm pretty sure Hazo either hates woodwinds or loves them so much he just decides to have us play crazy impossible runs in every single piece he writes...

I can feel the pain in my fingers trying to play those runs... I suddenly have a new found respect for my weapon of choice, the clarinet.

As torturous as it was, I actually had a lot of fun playing this on clarinet. :] Since it's mostly b flat scales, it's not such a big deal anyway.
