    This episode received a Genesis Award from the Humane Society of the United States in the category "Outstanding Children's Programming", which the HSUS Genesis Award press release described as a mythical tale about animals held captive for human entertainment that resonates with the way animals are used in circuses today".

    Some "easter eggs" to notice in this episode
    2:49 When they ransack Appa's saddle, one of the sandbenders opens an umbrella. That's the umbrella that the Gaang got in the episode "The Fortuneteller"
    3:13 "We need the shirshu spit darts!" The shirshu was the creature that the bounty hunter named June had (from episode 15 "Bato of the Water Tribe), as you should remember, it's saliva contains paralyzing agents.
    3:45 this is the same circus that Ty Lee was from. The guy at 5:02 is the guy that Azula was talking to when she was sabotaging
    Ty Lee's show.
    13:07 When Appa is flying into Ba Sing Se, you can see the cats from the previous episode that led Momo to the footprint. (Although, you cut them from this video)

    • @DigiVixen
      @DigiVixen 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I just thought of something. The first time he chews on the bars it's because he's teething... probably cutting his adult teeth. It could because besides hunger and sense of comfort, he's probably cutting his 'wisdom' teeth... showing that Appa is reaching full maturity.

  • @TimoKanal
    @TimoKanal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +346

    This is the saddest episode of all in my opinion, even way more sad than the Iroh scene last episode. Just the whole build up with Appa missing for already so many episodes and then dedicate one *full episode* of feeling worse and worse for Appa. When I first watched it my eyes became very watery and I had to fight to not just start crying.
    EDIT: Same happened when watching this reaction.

    • @thedeadice6121
      @thedeadice6121 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @★ Froggie Animation ★ In my opinion people hype up the sadness of the Iroh scene way too much. Yes, it's sad, but it's only for a few moments, and then we're on to Aang making zoos and Sokka doing haiku. Appa's Lost Days is an entire episode of feeling bad for Appa, and the empathy buildup is massive, seeing him fly all around alone, searching for food, missing Aang, makes me feel like garbage for him just by typing about it right now.

    "He's been pampered for a minute man, so he needs to live on the rugged side for a second, dude. A little pain will go a long way. I believe it. A little pain will go a long way. He's gonna overcome this and become stronger." ...what. I understand broadly where you're coming from, but no. This wasn't a person struggling against their limits in pursuit of a goal. As Guru Pathik said, "fear has moved in where trust should be." Appa didn't become stronger from this, and if he did it would still have been at the expense of trust; the Kyoshi Warriors and Pathik had to work hard to undo the damage from the pain and cruelty.

      I don't necessarily dislike Nahid, but I swear he says some of the absolute stupidest shit I've ever heard. In this video, Nahid deadass said that Appa being abused was gonna make him stronger and that he's "been pampered" up until now, when we've literally seen Appa flying across the world and fighting alongside the others since the beginning. Abuse is not like a necessary thing to "overcome" that will make you stronger, especially not animal abuse. That's not how animals work. Nahid has the dumbest opinions of the group, by far.
      I know you commented 2 years ago, but I still wanted to respond because Nahid's comment pissed me off and I was looking for a comment that mentioned this lol

    I always thought Bumi was Indian. I feel like South Asians would definitely be more prominent in the Earth Kingdoms (considering they are probably the most diverse nation) and the Air Temples (since they also take great inspiration from Hinduism) so I would have loved to seen that aspect more explored but the show is great anyways! I love this episode and I love this reaction! kay sal I always thought of them as Arabs because they live in the dessert and most of them have bushy beards and most Asians have straight beards. And I don't know why but the earth benders from the army look like them the most that's why I thought that. I guess everyone sees them differently. This is how I see them all: water benders are eskimos/Siberians, firebenders are Japanese, airbenders are Chinese and earth benders are Arabic. Also you could see earth benders as Mongolian but yeah they don't really look like Mongolians.

      Earth Kingdom architecture, clothing, etc draws inspiration from Qing and Han dynasty China. However, ethnically there's a lot of variation, so Earth Kingdom people are probably a melting pot of Chinese, Chinese ethnic minorities, and maybe some South Asian.
      I think the Sandbenders seem like they're Arabic or North African in style? They are earth benders too so they would be included as well.

    As an animal lover, it hurt me to see Appa in so much pain. Here they just went above and beyond just simple animal abuse with Appa’s torment and it quickly becomes hard to watch. This is no joke one of the darkest, saddest, and most agonizing torture sequences I’ve ever seen in any piece of media. Dead fricking serious!

    I remember watching the show fully once when I was 12. I got that this episode was sad but I didn't think anything of it. I rewatched the series a few weeks ago. I'm now 18. And This episode made me bawl. I cried my eyes out. Shit is just sad man, the amount of pain appa goes through, just one bad thing after another. Heart breaking

    When you think about it, that kid probably saw Appa's situation as his own, since his father's attitude towards him probably went a lot deeper than what a kid show could've shown.
