My favorite thing about this episode is that through learning the true nature of Firebending Zuko and Aang learn the Dancing Dragon form. The key to unlocking the secret of Firebending was a dance. Remember earlier in season 3? No one in the Fire Nation knows how to dance, and actively tries to stop it from happening. Kind of poetic.

Also do you realize how beautiful this is? Aang used to firebend for childish reasons, unpredictably. When he saw the destruction and harm it could cause, he stopped using it altogether. However, in the end, when he understood what it was meant for and how to properly use it, he uses it with joy on his face and brand new purpose.

Little tidbit I noticed:
Aang's arrow is blue, Zuko's scar is red.
Aang got judged by the red dragon, Zuko got judged by the blue dragon.
I don't know if it was intentional but this show does parallels masterfully.

You can visually tell the fire colour being changed
From zuko using darker hues of red but now using brighter oranges
It’s hard to explain but it shows a change in his technique
That's not just symbolic for inshow logic--rounder shapes are used for characters that are good, while jagged shapes are for bad characters. See baymax vs yzma.
Could also be that red fire is not as hot as brighter orange/yellow. Now that he’s unlocked his full potential his fire burns hotter too
Also the forms the fire took on were different. before it was more explosive.

I'll say it again... season 3 is the best season.
I feel season 2 is personally the best, but season 3 has some of the best episodes.
Season 2 stomps 1 and 3. Season 3 contains the majority of ATLA's highpoints but S2 is just consistently great, more so than 1 and 3, one of the reasons being the large amount of "filler" in them.

I did use quotation marks around filler for a reason. While S1 "filler" establishes the world, characters and relationships, all the while giving a stage for our protagonists to develope, S2 could build on this set-up to showcase one of the finest stories ever told.
In S2 they really got the ball rolling, switching from a more episodic to a flowing narrative. And this is always a superior narrative style to tell a story.
S3 defintely is closer to filler than S1 was. Ironically, this is the season i wish we would've had more episodes of, simply because of Zuko dynamic with the group. He got far too few episodes in Team Avatar. Made me wish we could've skipped episodes like "Painted Lady" and "Happy Feet" only to have them later with Zuko in it.
I completely agree with you guys about season 3. Season 2 was like it was stated, consistent. The first half of season 3 I think was the weaker part of the season, but second half of it had the best episodes once Zuko joined. How Toph provided a new perspective reflecting the Earth part of "Book: Earth" Zuko was finally able to reflect the Fire part of "Book: Fire" however I think he should have joined sooner. Still all great though.
However, there are more than 2 filler episodes. I hate that term honestly, but I guess we can be honest. The ones stated definitely are, but I personally feel The Headband, The Fortune Teller, Avatar Day, and I hate to say it but The Tales of Ba Sing Se are also examples. I would say *half* of Nightmares and Daydreams is filler, cuz Zuko's part in that episode was very essential, but Aang's started getting redudant. *BUT* like every TLAB filler episode, they're still very very enjoyable and do have interesting things to learn more about, however they don't contribute much at all to overall plot or character development. Only Bryke could make filler episodes so damn good though.
I've never seen Nahid get so deep. He seriously loves fire. Kind of like an arsonist. If Normies hq burns down I think we know who to look at first.

You know, one thing I love about your guys reactions is that you're a bunch of excitable people, but it never feels forced when you get really into something. It's really nice to watch, I honestly even teared up a bit (at this video and at some others), even if it sounds a bit silly.

14:55 What I love the most about this scene is that it takes zero explanation. The second you see the dragons dancing alongside Ang and Zucko you realize that ancient firebenders learned firebending by watching the dragons

Now that I think about it perhaps that's why Jeong Jeong wasn't Aang's teacher. He held the belief that fire was only destruction and wouldn't have been able to teach Aang to appreciate the element.

Fire goes deeper than just camp fires and stuff. Its the sun giving life and energy to plants, its the burning of sugars inside your cells that give you the energy to move. Fire is what combines minerals and water and creates organisms.

I always wondered if they heard the ran and Shaw's voices telepathically. This show is amazing.
But maybe it was more like Fang, Roku's dragon, when he communicated telepathically as spirits but Fang didn't use words, but images instead. So perhaps that is a dragon ability to convey thoughts in images since they don't share our verbal language. I have a theory that dragons came from the spirit world with their physical bodies before the spirit portals were closed thus have the special unexplained abilities they display for communicating their knowledge with humans.
Looking back, I think Aang had some weird recollection of Wan training the dragon dance with the dragon and that’s how he knew they had to do it.
I love this episode so much. To me it's the pinacle of Aang and Zuko's relationship, and the highest point of Zuko's character. They both learnt about harmony, within themselves and with each other. That's why I'm like "mehhh" when I watch the Jeong Jeong episode. Jeong Jeong was too full of hate towards the Fire Nation, he ended up hating firebending and transmitted it to Aang for months. Yes, fire is life, and the fire nation isn't full of people who seek death only, book 3 is amazing to tell that story. And the music, maaan, I'll never forgive Nickelodeon/Sony Music for never actually creating an OST for ATLA/LOK.

Fire is not just utilitarian as a tool for survival. In a mythical sense, fire is life. It is why our hearts beat and bodies are warm. They mention it in the episode and change how you think about firebending. No such thing as a bad/evil element.

What are you talking about? The story is on point. Lion Turtles gave humans their bending. The Badger Moles, Sky Bison, Moon & Ocean Spirits, and Dragons taught the humans how to use it. The key word here is “taught.” It also makes sense because in the end of ATLA Aang took away Firelord Ozai’s bending because he learned it from a Lion Turtle. If a Lion Turtle knows how to take bending away for good then it makes sense that the Lion Turtle is the one that gave bending to humans in the first place.
+Real Deadpool Like people have already mentioned, it's still consistent with what they reveal in LOK. Cuz you got to realize the Sun Warriors are just repeating their "myths" and "legends." Everything stated in TLAB is based off of myth and their own perception of history. They're going off of their hieroglyphics, storytellings, and anytime they bring up how bender learned bending, it's always a story. It's why they showed Wan learning the Dancing Dragon, from the dragon spirit. The actual ability was given by the Lion Turtle spirits, but the bending styles were inspired by the dragons, badger moles, moon and sky bison. Just like in our real world, history isn't always accurate. And also the story of Wan was 10,000 years ago that only extremely spiritual people like Unalaq believe or even know. That's an extremely long time for history to be mistranslated, forgotten or even destroyed intentionally by who knows.

I love the synchronization of Aang, Zuko, and the dragons during the dance
One thing I loved so much in this episode was how they explained what firebending felt like. Aside from just saying you "felt hot," describing the small flames they where holding gave a whole new air to what firebending, or just bending in general must feel like. Like the bending had a life all to its own. Something that I don't think we can truly understand since we have nothing even close.
Just remember, dragons, Avatar did it before Game of Thrones.

Some things about the universe only God truly knows (the secrets of the universe). The Definition of Hell is being seperate from God cause he is the only source of goodness (God is love ) hell was made for satan and his demons not humans. I've gotta say it fells pretty fucking good to see grown ass adults watch with their jaws dropped in awe and amazement this "kids" show. I mean that it what it is and im sure as shit kids love it, i sure did, but for someone to fully appreciate the beauty and depth of it they need to be atleast to an extent a "grown up". My idea is it's pretty freeing knowing im not entirely some random childish prick watching cartoons.

we all react the same why when we watch this scene. Where they perform the dance with the dragons and when the masters engulf them with fire showing them it's true beauty and meaning. Scenes like this take your breath away and leave you in shock and awe, and they are so rare. It's crazy to think about how a kids cartoon can inspire so much emotion.

Their Patreons constantly give them shit all the time in regards to the Avatar releases and the timing of the releases. For instance, some of the Patreons complained that the entire 4-part finale was released onto youtube at once, while the Patreons would get a weekly release instead, ignoring the fact that YT would get the finale a month later. Marketa noted in their discord server that it has caused Suraj to be less enthused with the show as a result.
I always like rewatching 'The Deserter' episode before this one, just to see the contrast/two halves of fire as well as Aang's character development :)

What I love about this episode are the Sun Warriors. They along with their abandoned city shows the origins of Fire Nation culture and how much it has changed. Or at least a branch of fire nation culture. Although they don't get too deep into it in this show and LOK touches a bit of the past, the "Smoke and Shadow" comic really dives into it. They should read the comics after they're done with TLAB as well as LOK if they watch it.

technically the avatar has the most problems learning the opposite element of their native tribe so it actually makes sense that fire would be as easy to learn for him as water, earth was his actually problem.

I love this episode. We got to SEE the importance of fire, there was no explanation. I love the Zuko and Aang bonding time too. But, my favorite bit is that Iroh's character continues to develop without him even showing up.

Nahid's jacket is so apt for this episode. I know 神龍 (dragon deity) is from Dragon Ball Z but it definitely works in this context as well, with the two worshipped dragon masters.
I love Zukos character development how he becomes best friends with Aang and Sokka (he gets close with toph and katara who he acts like an older brother to but Aang and Sokka in the comics especially say to Zuko after not seeing him a while how much they missed him and hug him, while toph and katara simply say hi good to see you how've you been, not the same tbh) at the end and the comics, and how many times in the comics when reunited with Aang and Sokka they hug him, Aang himself says Zuko is one of his best friends, and in legend of korra which I hate and denounce usually, but the scene where Iroh says Zuko and Aang became "life long friends, best friends" made me tear up and miss the days of Zuko and Aang they literally became brothers love to see enemy's become besties

Just notice something. When Zuko has a mental breakdown in Ba Sing Se, his evil side was represented by a blue dragon, and the good side was the red dragon. Then we found out that avatar Roku's (his maternal great grandfather) dragon was a red one and the fire lord sozin (his paternal great grandfather) was blue. Then finally, the dragon that teaches Zuko was the red one, confirming that Zuko is indeed redeemed himself.
The sheer beauty of this this episode still makes me emotional every time I see it. I love being able to see other people react the same way.
This is my absolute favourite episode of Avatar. I love it so much. I cry every time I watch it, and cried just now watching you guys watch it.
There's a theory that Iroh performed the Dragon Dance with Lu Ten. He already was known as "Dragon of the West" before he was disgraced at the Siege of Ba Sing Se. Since you need two people to perform the dance, it makes sense that he would take his dear son with him (Ozai would be just... unfit to say the least). So, Lu Ten would also know the original firebending moves. Also kinda explains why Iroh would risk placing his only son and future Fire Lord at the frontline of a siege, because prince Lu Ten would be really strong by that time

Some things about the universe only God truly knows (the secrets of the universe). The Definition of Hell is being seperate from God cause he is the only source of goodness (God is love ) hell was made for satan and his demons not humans. A common theme in season 3 is reversal. Zuko changes. Fire doesn't have such a bad rap anymore. Water was introduced first season (healing and calm) Even Jeong Jeong thought it was all sunshine and rainbows to be a waterbender, but now we have met Hama and the dark side of it. Aang and Zuko really bonded in this episode. Now I cannot wait for him to bond with the rest of the gang especially Katara who will not be easy to bond with

And for good reason. Using differently colored fire, colors they didn't know fire could make, showing that there is far more to fire than what they believed or are able to understand. Red for destruction was generalized in the Fire Nation military. But it can be green, yellow, purple, even gray. So simple, but so freaking genius.

It's ironic with Korra attempting to be more deep and mature it actually never reached the maturity and depth of ATLA. Just goes to show you that tackling deeper themes in a more adult oriented environement doesn't actually matter as much as executing the themes properly.
Idk, Korra tackled some mature themes that weren't in ATLA, like suicide, depression, having to face the idea that the people you'd like to just call "evil" were actually *right* and *you* are the one who needs to change...
I don't feel the same magic of ATLA in the first two seasons, but I think that's nostalgia factor; love both series to the core.
No that's what I meant. I think that despite LOK's short comings, its much more mature than TLA.
Certainly has more flaws than ATLA had overall, but still a really good show.

While LoK tried to be more mature by tackling deeper themes, it actually fell flat on its execution.
The opression of non-benders by benders? Never truly established or resolved.
The spirtuality of the second season? Not tackled at all but instead used as a plot device for a gundam battle to take place.
The anarchist philosophy of the Red Lotus? Well, they tried, but with the exception of a few throwaway lines it barely scratched the surface.
The imperialism of season 4? Again, just a plot device to set up the villain.
Korra's PTSD is without a doubt the best handled theme of the series. And even that was resolved, not through mental developement, but by pulling poison out of Korra's body.
I could go on if you'd like...
Meanwhile, contrast this to the themes of ATLA. A young boy, learning of the genocide of his people having to grow into a material and spiritual leader by adapting and learning about the world surroundign him.
Philosophical ideals, the nuanced morality surrounding war and conflict. Children, living during war time. The social dynamic of people having to cooperate and compromise to sustain themselves and achieve their goals. Tradition versus progression, etc., etc., etc.. And just like LoK, i have barely even scratched the surface.
With practically every theme, ATLA is more nuanced and conclusive than LoK.
Korra is a story focussed around ideals but to its own detriment, it used them as nothing but a plot device and thus handled them rather poorly.
ATLA is a story of life, maturation and the eventual neccessity to adapt to the circumstances you're presented with.
It doesn't matter how seemingly deep or mature your themes are, if you can't execute them properly you might as well leave them out.

LoK is a show pretending to be deep, when in actuality it is completely outdone by its predeccessor.
I'd love to see a full season of Zuko in the Gaang before they fought the fire lord, like we're missing Book 4: Air.
Maybe iroh went to meet the masters when he lost his son maybe he lost sight of his inner fire like zuko
