Thank you for watching this review of Boltgun! Be sure to let me know your thoughts on the game and to the 40k fans watching give me some suggestions on other games in the franchise you think I should check out. Hope everyone is doing well!
If you want a fun co-op game check out Darktide. I'd also really recommend space marine not only because this game is a light sequel to it but also because it's awesome and has a full sequel coming out soon.
Generally in the lore its stated that in regards to a space marine something that big should not be able to move that quickly so they really respected all details
I'm seriously hoping they consider adding more to the game. This is a framework with SO much potential. Imagine DLC for a new Ork murdering campaign. Or an Horde mode involving the Tyranids. Or some good ol' fashion Eldar krumping!
This!!!! 40K games should NOT be turn based or strategy games as you can do that in the tabletop! This is what I have been crying out for since Space Marine!
You should review Space Marine (2011) It's basically the prequel to Boltgun. It's also the greatest 3rd person shooter I've ever played. God damn if that game isn't a festival of gore and fun. Boltgun is mostly Space Marine's conversion from 3rd to 1st person.
Warhammer 40K the only universe where dropping an entire catherdal of genetically enhanced trigger happy nuns from Orbit, is standard operating proceedure.
Got to recommend Warhammer: Space Marine. It came out some time ago and is superb! It is a 3rd person shooter and is a sort of prequel to this game (or maybe this is more of a sequel?). In fact, one of the taunts our space marine says is: "I will finish what Captain Titus started". Well you play as Captain Titus in Warhammer: Space Marine. Further I believe in both Boltgun and Warhammer: Space Marine we are fighting on the same planet: Graia.
@@wishiwascooler I especially love Dreadnought assult mode. Me and my mate will rush to be Dreadnought, and try to kill the enemy team with only Melee.
I gotta say, the gore is not that ridiculous when you consider that the boltgun fires explosive rounds the size of a fist. And that's the standard issue Space Marine weapon.
@@Euruk1 it's really nice to see it treated with respect. A lot of games treat the weapon like a 9mm SMG; when it's actually a small, fully automatic, armour piecing, RPG launcher.
I'm pretty sure (unless it was coincidence) but if you taunt a cultist they stop firing at you for a moment to scream in panic. In the thick of fighting it won't do much but it is a neat detail. Again, assuming that was meant to happen and wasn't a pure coincidence when it happened to me.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS As well they should. A 40K space marine is an 8 foot tall, genetically and cybernetically enhaced super soldier clad in a ton of power armor, not something you want charging at you with a chainsword.
You can continiously smash the chainsword button to tearing through big enemies, stunning them. For games I really recommend is the first Space Marine (to which Boltgun is a sequel-spinoff) and Dawn of War 2, a nice tactical real-time squad game with rpg elements. Think of Diablo but with more characters to control.
I like how the sprites are made to look like the tabletop miniatures. Also, I haven’t played the game myself yet but I think you’d be able to pick up on most of the context for this game from the game space marine. Especially considering that the story of this game takes place after space marine’s and it’s on the same planet.
This isn’t just a good 40K game. Its a good Boomer Shooter! It still is filled with 40K fluff, but its more like- enough for the player, be one who’s never touched 40K, or the 40K veteran to get the gist of what’s happening, and why they’re alone.
Im very eager to get home and fire this up. Hope its good, i mean the bar isnt high when it comes to 40k games so.. Yeah after the video im hyped. Also for other games? Warhammer 40k Space Marine..third person shooter similar to Gears of War but you mow down hoards of orks. You said you already played Dawn of War but the Unification mod is a good addition to Dawn of War. Darktide is average, i like to play it when i juat want to murder hoards of enemies..like in L4D. Warhammer Inquisitor/Martyr is a diablo style action rpg and its pretty fun if you are into those games.
The Doom 2016 movement mechanics really put me off this game. The brief slow-motion mele kill mechanic also takes me out of the rhythm of a good 90's FPS. The simple AI and lack of attack variety is also a disappointment. It is a shame as this really had potential.
Game is great so far. Just finished the first chapter. Took almost 6 hours. This def needs a map as at least 2 of those hours so far is me just walking around the map lost af trying to figure out where I have to go. Only downside to the game as you mentioned.
This game is a spin off to space marine, captain titus is referenced in the taunts, the opening cutscene explains space marine as context, and it takes place on the same planet, Graia.
This game is awesome, well done, full of lore references, but I wish I could hold more ammo, especially when I play on Exterminatus and plan 100% achivements.
ERADICATION OF ALL XENOS IS MANDATORY OBLIGATION TO GOD EMPEROR. Dang, how cool is this setting I can't stop fangirling even tho I'm too ADHD to ever play proper strategy version.
I'm working on upgrading to a capture card that can record at 1440p and higher. I'd prefer to not upscale as it can hurt quality, but I'll look into some options.
Spark: Huh. Really? The difficult isnt grueling for sure, but there's a lot of sections it just thought were a little unclear and sometimes it felt like cheap deaths were common. It assumed you played on Exterminatus/Hardest Difficulty. And while every gun felt great, on Exterminatus, the shotgun lacks any damage because it seems that everyone has resistance to it, except for lesser plague toads where the situations for them it would rather use the heavy bolter anyways. It's in the middle of chapter 2 right now, so hopefully that changes. Also, the pulse rifle having a cool down after a shot before you can switch it right away feels REALLY jank, but it understands that's probably a balance thing.
From what I see it's all four gods on Graia. Space Marine gave us Khorne, for example. Its sequel gives us Tzeench and Nurgle. So, presumably, we'll get Slaanesh if they figure out how to do that without getting the game banned in many countries.
This game is a spinoff to space marine, you might like that and its upcoming sequel. As for other faction's within the setting, you can suffer as a weeb space commie in Fire Warrior.
The gunplay, the world on display and the general artwork are excellent and worth the price alone. Only criticism is the arena-like design, it's lazy compared to proper old-school level design.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS Thanks for this reply! I've been looking around to find the campaign length for this game. 8-10 hours is perfect for a boomer shooter, I was worried this game would end up being really good but only 3 or 4 hours so I'm happy to know it's not. Thanks for the awesome video Kirk!
@@omerfaruk-qg8ez Imo it depends on the quality of the game. Figuring out the cost per hour of a game can be good as a general guideline in cases where a game is extremely short or long but treating that ratio as one of the primary considerations when deciding whether or not to purchase the game is gonna keep you from playing some shorter games that are absolutely worth the asking price. Not only that but it's kinda bad for the industry as a whole, the strong positive association with a low cost per hour is the reason why a lot of big name titles are bloated with mediocre, boring, or bad content when they probably could have made a better game by trimming the fat and making a shorter game.
@@ladams391 your reasoning works in the context of western consumer. In regions like mine where we are treated with harsh local pricings we don't have much choice but to ask is this really worth all the meals I'm skipping it for? So yeah, I'm broke
A shot gun. :) Shot guns still exist in 40K They’re more commonly equipped on scouts, than full space marines, but they are still used from time to time in books and lore.
The shotgun is usually used by scouts or Deathwatch marines. The Deathwatch being the marines directly working with the inquisition. It's not part of the standard tactical marine's equipment in normal chapters, as, like the sniper rifle, it's a niche weapon.
I know its not a retro game but have you played Space Marine? Boltgun is kinda a sequel and will get you prepped for Space Marine 2. Other than that i can only tell you to go lore diving on youtube. Put on a long video in the background while folding clothes or something and you'll pick up quite a bit
While the game isn't overly difficult, I think this is a win, as you are playing a Space marine--and it feels like it. You are a bad, bad, man. You FEEL lethal and powerful--as it should be. I think the difficulty could be a criticism for any other protagonist, but for a Space marine? No--you should be death incarnate and this game gives you that. I also liked how the bolt gun is a great weapon throughout. "Holy Relic" indeed.
Boltgun is worst game than Prodeus in every direction, but gets praised over it simply because of the IP. While Prodeus gets dismissed as a "another DOOM clone".

You can spam V with the chainsword to shred enemies until theyre dead
