    335,000 kms on my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 and the pinion seal has finally given up the ghost. Now that's not just everyday driving. Drag racing at the strip, and other places too. Guess I'll be fixing that deal up and keep the ol' girl running strong. Great job on the video.

    I like to clean the old leaked fluid off the housing, so I can tell easier if a new leak has sprung or not. Good video

    So basically if the universal joint is going bad it will cause the pinion seal to go bad and in turn leak all the fluid out which if left like that it will destroy the rear diff. I think that is what happened to mine. I started by changing the pinion seal. it worked for about 2 months. Then the oil mustve leaked out and destroyed my races and bearings on the pinion. So i changed those out and put a new seal on then added oil. That was about 5 months ago and now it is leaking again. I am pretty sure the universal joint is bad because i hear a single clunk when shifting from reverse into drive. So, now I have my work cut out for me. It is crazy how everything is connected and one thing will destroy everything if not treated. Like having a broken toe will make you limp then your hip starts hurting and then your back and before you know it the sky crumbles and falls lol

    A clogged breather tube can cause the seals to leak as well ;)>

    I’ve been chasing a clunk for years now sounding from my axle. Could bad pinion seals create clunking noise when taking off from 0? The clunking doesn’t happen all the time. Happens more often when the car is warm and has been driven a few miles.

    Im working on a f150 2005 trying to replace that same pinion bearing on the video. however it doesnt want want to come out with a pick. Is there any other tool that i can use to take it out? I dont want to take the whole differential out as im no mechanic and i feel i would mess something up.

    I have a 22 frontier with a leaking pinion seal that's getting replaced this Friday .I also have a noise at 50-60 mph uphill only upon steady throttle. If I take my foot off the gas it goes away .can a leaking pinion seal cause a noise? What does my sound issue sound like?bad preload? Could my noise be cured by the pinion bearing replacement ? I'm hoping it does or they don't torque things right and the noise is worse so they finally have to do something about it .I told them 50-60 uphill and to test drive they go around the block 25 mph and say everything's fine 😒

      My first thought is a leaking seal might mean your gear oil level is not as high as it should be. Seams like that in it's self could lead to issues that could be causing the noise.

  • @BBDos
    @BBDos ปีที่แล้ว

    What was the point of the jack stands? Did you raise the wheels off the ground to do this?

    • @peteowens3033
      @peteowens3033 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know about this case but I found it easier to unbolt and reinstall the U joint bolts when you can rotate the drive shaft a half turn. Having at least one wheel off the "ground" (via the jack stand with a standard diff.) allows you to do that. I also like to rotate the diff when changing out the fluid. Might not make much difference but makes me feel better anyway.

    I replaced my pinion seal and test drove the car for about 5kms and came back home. Next day it started leaking again just parked. Everything checked out ok. I did not do a preload of the pinion flange nut, I just tightened it. But that should'nt have anything to do with the seal that's sitting outside. I haven't checked the breather tube yet if it's clogged. Your thoughts please. Thanks mate.
