I think that the "problem" with lance for most people is that it is not a very flashy/dynamic weapon. I like it because I am able to stay in the face of the monster while everyone else is trying to not get hit.

Evadelancing in Tri and 4U was fun as hell, never getting away from the monster thefore never lowering those sweet dps, meanwhile getting all them offensive guards in Iceborne is another level of satisfaction. I feel like a mosquito that just gets stronger the more you try to swat it...

Every other weapon(type) in the game has much more open movement and dodge rolls, gunners included. Even the other slowest weapons in the game like great sword and sword mode switch axe can spam dodge rolls to more easily position themselves and travel distance, even though GS can easily sheath to move quicker and SA can morph back to axe mode for faster movement. Anyone trying lance (or gunlance) for the first time is most likely going to try using familiar movement options and failing spectacularly because the lance weapons just do not function that way. Just the other day actually a friend of mine who is a great sword main was watching me play lance and wanted to try it himself only to hand the controller back to me after 30 seconds, and he was attempting to do exactly what I just described about movement.

DB seems to be a go to for us lance users. I lance 90% of the time even in multi, it just feels good being a walking mountain. Plus it's funny to out dps everyone due to just staying in the monsters face.
A big thumbs up for being the 1st in icebourne youtuber to post a lance guide. I use odogarons misery 2. Long white sharpness comes with affinity 30 non elemental. I put a affinity augment and health regen 2 on it. My build hits 100 percent affinity at all times. I Dont need to worry about elemental i just run this lance. gaurd 5 charm.
aand now I plan run only guard 3 =D and I forgot about that super guard buff, so you can fit more deeeeps and still you don't take huge hit on your comfy side. Plus you don't need health augment to your lance with this, regen will negate your chip damage via blocking AND regen isn't wasted cause you can run Peak Performance, but might be hard to fit in since critical stuff and offensive guard is WAY better.
Shekki there a lot of moves that using the power guard to “guard up” won’t work because you’d have to predict the monster is gonna do it way too far in advance velkahana bean spams come to mind
As a Lance main, Ruiner Nerg has been my choice so far. I have used other Lance but the need of Handicraft and only having 5~10 more damage compare to Nerg Lance turned me off. With Agitator on Nerg Lance, it trumps everything.
You can run guard 5 and offensive guard 3 pretty comfortably with it too. May not be the absolute max dps but man. It still hits super hard combo'd with evasion mantle.
Consider the Yian Garuga Lance. The affinity makes sets easier, and sharpness upkeep with masters touch easier. And the damage isn't far behind with posion
I prefer the Garuga lance, on account that it has killer looks, poison and a whopping 25% affinity. I do run handicraft 4 tho for that purple goodness.
@@Snipemehere guard 5 makes everything deliciously laughable. Is it needed? No, not really. But it is hilarious eating something that should chip you into the floor and just laughing in it's face.
Pretty sure in optimal combos the actual units of sharpness per minute Lance is still ahead. And if you are comparing full burst it gets compared to Charge which eats sharpness for dinner. Swinglance isn't bad for sharpness either.
4RT1LL3RY swinglance is 100% garbage in Iceborne though, so you shouldn’t really ever be using it. Gunlance also doesn’t benefit from Masters Touch (on the shelling anyway) so you’re still destroying the bar way faster. Not sure what you’re looking at, but normal and wide poke shell will absolutely eat through sharpness much more quickly than a lance will.
A few things to note: Live chat in the preview was talking a lot about needing an Attack+ deco. I think for all of the builds shown it wasn't actually needed, with Guard/Attack being a viable replacement for example. Or using more Offensive Guard/Attack decos over OG/Expert. Basically, the lv1 slot skills you need are fairly lenient on what specific decos you need. The other thing I wanted to mention was Guard 5 - speed runners I've talked to use Guard 5 on Shara, Namielle, & Rajang. I believe that's it as far as monsters where it's 'required'. Obviously it's a huge QoL buff against a lot of other things as well.
Not gonna lie why the heck would you use lance against shara it's such a bad match up almost worse than Lunastra for lance... the chip damage is insane other than those 2 lance cheeses everything I just never get Cornwall jewels so I have to have the guard charm for me
Some people might only use Lance. Also I don't really agree anyway. It's a pain when you first fight him before you have health augment, after that the chip damage doesn't really matter. You just have to know how to deal with the laser - either block it diagonally so that it pushes you out after a few hits, or just avoid it entirely by guard dashing to the side followed by a side hop. As for Lunastra... I 100% agreed initially in World, but now I think Lunastra is actually totally fine with Lance. Clutch claw really improved that matchup for melee in general, but Lance in particular gets some good openings because of clutch counter. You also have a Lance-specific way to deal with nova when she isn't enraged.
I'm currently focusing on LS because I haven't used them since 3U. But I plan to get back into Lance during me end game stuff so these vids will surely be quite helpful, thanks!
Hello, lance lover here. My current favorite build is using nerg's lance with an off meta build, it has coalescence 3 on there which is great for most of the new monsters as they have a constant stream of debuff and for non-speed runners it adds a lot of damage if you take one of those hits.
I would love some advice. I'm wanting to pick up lance so I can be a tank and laugh in monsters' faces. I just beat Velkhana in the story, and I don't know if my jewel hunts are going all too well... Any advice on a good newbie lance build? I'm willing to farm armor sets for their skills to hold me off until I can get good jewels to add on later. Thank you, and happy hunting!
As a poke-poke-poke-hop from MH3 onward, I've _REALLY_ enjoyed how smooth and aggressive lance is in MHW. I didn't know about power guard giving guard up at all, though! (Nor did I know about DB having implicit razor sharp; that's fascinating.) My use case for it is stuff like Vel, so I don't think that reveal is too useful _per se,_ but it's always neat to learn a new trick about a fav weapon.
Love these videos. I've dabbled in lance but despite it feeling good to play, thought the damage seemed meh so I'm really happy to see some sets that show where I can buff up my builds. I can't wait for the elemental and status videos too. Also, seeing HH so close to the top of that poll got me to subscribe on Patreon so I could vote. Hope the other HH mains on here do the same lol
Offensive guard, agitator, crit eye, weakness expert are all damn near necessary for lance builds. Lance is all about pressure to get those sweet deeps. Stand in the monsters face and poke poke poke. Never back down, never surrender.
@Jinjinx and tuna I completely disagree with communities acceptance that guard 3 is the ideal guard. There's several reasons for this, the first of which if you read the description there's no difference in guard potential between lvls 3 and 4 but lvl 4 offers twice as much stamina reduction. (30% instead of 15%) Can you do a better analysis of the defensive skills such as Guard for everyone so maybe they understand it better? My specific interaction is how much knockback reduction you get per lvl of guard. Education on stamina reduction is self explanatory to an extent but I think how and at what lvl changes how much knockback you get. If you use the Lance to demonstrate you can teach people the second form of power guarding that you can only do from the guarding recoil animation.

I’ve been away for a long time and just returned to the states and the game. Question: at 2:22 and 5:05 he blocks (perfect guard it seems), and then grapples Tigrex. Is that the new grapple mechanic intro’d by iceborne?? Does blocking at the moment of attack always send you airborne to initiate the grapatk? Ive never seen nor done that set of moves before so want to learn and incorporate it into my play style.
It is good though for early mr. It gets purple sharpness and 720 poison attack with just 2 poison jewels meaning more procs fasteners as the fight goes on... I highly recommend it... although personally I love my king Atlantis trident shara lance
Hey, I think we need a little update on this, isn't raging brachydios lance much better than ruiner nergigante one? Also, are raging brachy pieces gonna change the current MT meta set?
I use the Kulu-Yaku Lance. 1 Affinity Augment + Max Affinity from Mods + Critical Eye 7 = 80% Affinity _before_ WEX. Stupid comfy since you don't need a single point of Handi to maintain sharpness. Personally, I find it in a similar place as the Hellish Trasher and there are better lances dps wise(which this video covers).
From all the speed run vids I've seen, definitely going to have acidic glavenous in there. I suspect there will be a certain blast lance sneaking in as well.
you should have probably also mentioned the Kulu-Ya-Ku Lance, with current augments(health, attack, attack, custom all attack) it reaches 635 power(+NEB) vs ruiners 667 without having the drawback to rely on outside sources to reach 100% affinity. also a big note once we get a snowy area added to GL which presumably would add another augment slot to R10 and another custom augment (both going to attack) you´d reach about 650 power (+NEB) with the Kulu lance.
Be prepared to see Teostra helm, Brute Tigrex chest, Teostra gloves, Teostra waist and Jaruga legs for all future builds in the meta series. I doubt it will be different for most of the melee weapons. ;)
at like 7:20 you say the acidic glavenous' purple sharpness is hard to manage, so the rajang weapon's 20 hits of white is better, but the acidic glavenous also has 20 hits of white. Does the AG end up being significantly worse than the rajang lance when it loses purple sharpness?
Hey Jinx, two questions. 1) Is the gas powered stick still the no 1 ruler of GS or is it dethroned now? 2) What thunder/ice HBGs, LBGs, DBs, SAs, GSs and hammers would you mathematically reccomend for us who are still trying to get one of every weapon from Kulve's (seemingly endless) hoard? Maybe one day a proper weapon display will be added to your room, so I keep my chest full of gold weapons waiting for that day. At least now I can pick one out and put it on display. I think that Kulve will be back for yet another golden boogaloo so I'd rather prepare the weapons now in peace, rather than panic once that it gets mentioned that a mountain of gold is moving somewhere in the distance, and coming at us with glacier slowness. I've been using abyss aggressor 2 as my second Lance after datura. I was wondering what to make next but as is I still have decent clear times against tempered Mr monsters and gold Rathian. Lance made iceborne pretty easy for me.
Clutch Counter made me love lance again, also I would prefer Guard 5 because some monsters do keep their distance from time to time, meaning you lose damage output so Guard 3 and 5 are pretty mandatory for a Lance build imo
How do you think a weapon like the jang lance will improve if they add another augment slot letting it get a tiny bit extra element with the 1 slot augment?
PC player here. How are you able to run Affinity I and Health Regen I on the Nergi lance? The max slots is 4 with the extra slots upgrade. The Affinity I is 2 slots, and the Health Regen I is 3 slots.

Depends on which decos you look for. Regular decorations are very common in Tier 1 Tempered master rank investigations, but the guiding lands also drop some lower tier decorations if you still look for something like weakness exploit. Lvl 4 decorations are best to farm from tier 2/3 monsters. This here isn’t probably a 100% accurate information, it’s just what I can tell you from my experience and what I’ve read online so far
Just a question. How do you calculate approximate damage on terms of element? I would like to know, since one guy I know often tells me that elemental LS can outdamage raw LS with a "speedrunner" set, and I want to confirm that.
I wish I could remember offhand but I use a ruiner Lance set with razor sharp instead of teo touch because I could fit brace and max health boost while keeping max expert and atk boost and squeeze in some agi.
Is the Rajang lance even worth using? I just did a base test, Rajang vs other elemental lances, and the elemental lances seemed to do a little more damage per hit. And that's not even considering elemental weaknesses or the rajang's negative affinity.
If you want a comfy Lance that's flexible with fitting variable builds that can fit in blight resists etc, I'd say Yian Garuga is a good choice, probably better than Nerg Lance and Shara's. Although none MT Nergi Lance is pretty neat. Also, Guard 5 is absolutely mandatory for quite a few matchups unless your intention is to avoid the certain moves requiring it. If you try to block Namielle's water barf with anything other than 5, you will be chipped to death. And that's just one of a few examples. And Guard 5 is just far more comfy across the board. The chip damage is ridiculous in Iceborne

@Jinjinx and tuna I completely disagree with communities acceptance that guard 3 is the ideal guard. There's several reasons for this, the first of which if you read the description there's no difference in guard potential between lvls 3 and 4 but lvl 4 offers twice as much stamina reduction. (30% instead of 15%) Can you do a better analysis of the defensive skills such as Guard for everyone so maybe they understand it better?
My specific interaction is how much knockback reduction you get per lvl of guard. Education on stamina reduction is self explanatory to an extent but I think how and at what lvl changes how much knockback you get. If you use the Lance to demonstrate you can teach people the second form of power guarding that you can only do from the guarding recoil animation.

I’ve been away for a long time and just returned to the states and the game. Question: at 2:22 and 5:05 he blocks (perfect guard it seems), and then grapples Tigrex. Is that the new grapple mechanic intro’d by iceborne?? Does blocking at the moment of attack always send you airborne to initiate the grapatk? Ive never seen nor done that set of moves before so want to learn and incorporate it into my play style.
with lance yes its like the counter thrust but only with the clutch claw it sends u off in the air and u grapple on to the monster

I’ve been curious about the Pukei Lance, because of how good poison is in Iceborne.
actually poison is not that good, is the gold rathian weapons that are good, JJ&T have a video on poison and other on GR weapons
It is good though for early mr. It gets purple sharpness and 720 poison attack with just 2 poison jewels meaning more procs fasteners as the fight goes on... I highly recommend it... although personally I love my king Atlantis trident shara lance

I use the Kulu-Yaku Lance. 1 Affinity Augment + Max Affinity from Mods + Critical Eye 7 = 80% Affinity _before_ WEX. Stupid comfy since you don't need a single point of Handi to maintain sharpness. Personally, I find it in a similar place as the Hellish Trasher and there are better lances dps wise(which this video covers).
From all the speed run vids I've seen, definitely going to have acidic glavenous in there. I suspect there will be a certain blast lance sneaking in as well.
you should have probably also mentioned the Kulu-Ya-Ku Lance, with current augments(health, attack, attack, custom all attack) it reaches 635 power(+NEB) vs ruiners 667
without having the drawback to rely on outside sources to reach 100% affinity.
also a big note once we get a snowy area added to GL which presumably would add another augment slot to R10 and another custom augment (both going to attack) you´d reach about 650 power (+NEB) with the Kulu lance.

Be prepared to see Teostra helm, Brute Tigrex chest, Teostra gloves, Teostra waist and Jaruga legs for all future builds in the meta series. I doubt it will be different for most of the melee weapons. ;)
at like 7:20 you say the acidic glavenous' purple sharpness is hard to manage, so the rajang weapon's 20 hits of white is better, but the acidic glavenous also has 20 hits of white. Does the AG end up being significantly worse than the rajang lance when it loses purple sharpness?
Those EFR also took account of the damage multiplier from the sharpness. Means that nergi at white and AG at purple have almost equal dps.
Hey Jinx, two questions.
1) Is the gas powered stick still the no 1 ruler of GS or is it dethroned now?
2) What thunder/ice HBGs, LBGs, DBs, SAs, GSs and hammers would you mathematically reccomend for us who are still trying to get one of every weapon from Kulve's (seemingly endless) hoard?
Maybe one day a proper weapon display will be added to your room, so I keep my chest full of gold weapons waiting for that day. At least now I can pick one out and put it on display.
I think that Kulve will be back for yet another golden boogaloo so I'd rather prepare the weapons now in peace, rather than panic once that it gets mentioned that a mountain of gold is moving somewhere in the distance, and coming at us with glacier slowness.

I've been using abyss aggressor 2 as my second Lance after datura. I was wondering what to make next but as is I still have decent clear times against tempered Mr monsters and gold Rathian. Lance made iceborne pretty easy for me.
Clutch Counter made me love lance again, also I would prefer Guard 5 because some monsters do keep their distance from time to time, meaning you lose damage output so Guard 3 and 5 are pretty mandatory for a Lance build imo
Lance was the 2nd weapon I got to 100 hunts and I'm excited for IB to come to PC

PC player here. How are you able to run Affinity I and Health Regen I on the Nergi lance? The max slots is 4 with the extra slots upgrade. The Affinity I is 2 slots, and the Health Regen I is 3 slots.

Depends on which decos you look for. Regular decorations are very common in Tier 1 Tempered master rank investigations, but the guiding lands also drop some lower tier decorations if you still look for something like weakness exploit. Lvl 4 decorations are best to farm from tier 2/3 monsters. This here isn’t probably a 100% accurate information, it’s just what I can tell you from my experience and what I’ve read online so far

Just a question. How do you calculate approximate damage on terms of element? I would like to know, since one guy I know often tells me that elemental LS can outdamage raw LS with a "speedrunner" set, and I want to confirm that.
Nergi lance doesn't really need masters touch. I usually get to blue sharpness right about the time the monster is ready to move on to the next area.
I wish I could remember offhand but I use a ruiner Lance set with razor sharp instead of teo touch because I could fit brace and max health boost while keeping max expert and atk boost and squeeze in some agi.
Just a side note: Some attacks could've been avoided with shield charge...

I've been wanting to pick up the Goodlance (the EXTREMELY BETTER version of the Gunlance) and this seems like a step in the right direction
Add in even more with that glider mantles 2 lvl 4 decos and an elemental mantle
Is the Rajang lance even worth using? I just did a base test, Rajang vs other elemental lances, and the elemental lances seemed to do a little more damage per hit. And that's not even considering elemental weaknesses or the rajang's negative affinity.
If you want a comfy Lance that's flexible with fitting variable builds that can fit in blight resists etc, I'd say Yian Garuga is a good choice, probably better than Nerg Lance and Shara's. Although none MT Nergi Lance is pretty neat.
Also, Guard 5 is absolutely mandatory for quite a few matchups unless your intention is to avoid the certain moves requiring it. If you try to block Namielle's water barf with anything other than 5, you will be chipped to death. And that's just one of a few examples. And Guard 5 is just far more comfy across the board. The chip damage is ridiculous in Iceborne
