this game used to be preinstalled on the tv when I was 6. it made no sense to me back then and seeing the actual rules brought some closure to the memories
I'm playing for the first time and this was an incredibly well done tutorial of the game. A lot of questions I might have had were all answered. Great job.
This is a great instructional video on Othello rules :) Just one point to add on, the top right disc of the starting position should always be black from each players' perspective by tradition :)
I became addicted to this game playing it online, but I only became interested in the game as a whole because of, well... can anyone think of a *specific game* when I quote this? _"A minute to pick up, a lifetime to perfect!"_
After watching this video, I want to play and challenge my friends in our community. I'm an average player of Othello and still improving and discovering techniques. I guess my only strategy for any other level players like me is to outsmart and use deception concepts just like what I've realized and learn from Saboteur. Great and Unique game because this is the predecessor of my Tabletop boardgames and Puzzles 😁👍♥️🎲🎱🍩☕😃
Lost my second online game from a player in Japan. My record stands at 7-3-0. Have only gone up against 2 online players (Both from Japan) this year. Getting back into to it after not playing for about the past 2 years.
Me: Are you securing the corners? You: The corners? Why? Me: Ahhhh, see, if you take all four corners... Also me: You can flip the script on your opponent!
I remember playing this when i was 4 to about 8. My family couldn’t figure it out and would be annoyed when i won all the time. Gave it up because nobody really challenged me to it outside of my family
question: Do you get just once chance to outflank you opponent or can you outflank multiple times (in different areas of the board) during your single turn?
A legal spot is a spot where your disc-to-be-placed borders at least one opponent's disc, and behind that disc (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally) there is at some point a dics of your colour again. So, if there is a horizontal line BLACK-WHITE and you play black, you can put it on the right of this. If there is a line BLACK-WHITE-WHITE-WHITE you can also put it to the right of it (and flip all three white discs in one go).
Why say that each player gets 30 disks at the beginning? That's not really true if each player keeps making moves as long as there are any disks left. Isn't it effectively just a single pool of 60 disks?
Thank you! I had an NES cartridge with Othello on it. The last time I played it was probably when I was seven or eight. It was always against the computer, and I couldn't suss out the rules for myself. Naturally, I lost every time I tried to play, because I didn't even know how to try to win. Can I assume that a player cannot "flank" themselves? For example, if the black player places a piece to flank their opponent horizontally, but this placement results in a shape where the white player's already-placed pieces essentially flank the black pieces vertically, the black player's pieces in that vertical line do not turn white, right? If this assumption is correct, then it seems like a good strategy, filling in gaps so it's impossible for the opponent to flank those pieces on that axis.
As many opponent disc as there are between your newly placed disc and an existing disc of yourself. In all three (horizontally, vertically and diagonally) directions.
Aaaand I'm lost at 1:10... And onward. Like 1:37. How the heck did this happen in the first place? Why are there two whites between two blacks?? None of this makes sense..
Great, it is good to have another challenging game other than chess, because obsesion with chess makes one arrogant and obsessive to the point of making chess more important than life

lol same
I heard a GO player call this the Tic-Tac-Toe of table top games. The more I think it of it, the more of a sick burn it becomes.
I'm curious how it was "preinstalled on the TV"
Same, though instead of TV I had them on one of those electronic translator thingies. One of my favs back then.
Same

Glad I could help!
This is the best tutorial - clear, no rapid change of frames, no wasted words - thank you so much! 😊
I remember playing this game with my grandma all the time and I still have the same board that we played with
What a good grandma😇

After watching your crazy good monopoly vids, i knew i can play this gane again! Thanks
What happens to if you consume all of the other players discs
@@TroyVan6654 Not true. It can happen rather early in the game. It is called a wipe-out. If you wipe-out your opponent's discs, you win.
I love this channel❤️
Thanks. This was on a mini arcade game we bought. I was wondering what it was called.

I never understood this game until you explained the outflanking

Really well made video, thanks!
We had this on the atari 2600 growing up. good times.
Thanks, this was really well explained!
My favorite game of all time.
Very well explained. Thank you
this was so good at explaining how to play. Well done lmao
Seeing it explained like this makes it so much easier to understand than trying to read the instructions lol
I love Othello!!! This is such a great game!!!
Should I buy
Agreed
Well, Othello and Reversi can also be named Renegade.
Same
Thanks for explaining the rules
I'm tempted to make a 4 player version, maybe even a 6 player version of this using dice/cubes instead of discs...
why at 1:52 we can't flip those 2 white pieces?! i thought they're in same line with last 2?!
I remember playing this when i was 4 to about 8. My family couldn’t figure it out and would be annoyed when i won all the time. Gave it up because nobody really challenged me to it outside of my family
I want to challenge you on plato 🤷🏼♂️
I used to think Othello and Go were the same thing
Great explanation of this game thank you
question: Do you get just once chance to outflank you opponent or can you outflank multiple times (in different areas of the board) during your single turn?
You only place down one disk on one turn. That one disk may outflank multiple lines, as shown at 1:04.
If you have a chance to outflank two or more discs then you can
Welcome to the World of Othello :) definitely a game that will activate your brain
in fact the player going second has a small advantage, since (if neither side skips a turn) they can have the last move.
Is that shirt for sale? I'm just curious like im not going to buy it but im curious. That shirt looks cool.
Technically yes
@@TripleSGames why technically?

This is the only version of "reversi" I am familiar with. I was surprised that it was a version of a completely different game.
but, like..... where are the legal spots to place disks? How can you tell where you can and cannot play?

How about Ratuki
Very helpful 🙌🏼
[Clubhouse Games flashback intensifies]
That's some weird chess man
Here after "Roboco accidentally says "Board sandwich" to Rushia and Suisei"
Very well explained ✌️
Having never heard of this game before, I thought this would have something to do with Shakespeare.
This game is addictive
Very good tuturial
how many we can flip plz tell
maximum 3 times ?
As many opponent disc as there are between your newly placed disc and an existing disc of yourself. In all three (horizontally, vertically and diagonally) directions.
Yay omg i was right i only read the instructions and i check now if i was right😆
Aaaand I'm lost at 1:10... And onward. Like 1:37. How the heck did this happen in the first place? Why are there two whites between two blacks?? None of this makes sense..
This is my favorite game
Also, you can win by flipping every single disc
I was about to say that.
Which, in a sense, is an exceptional instance of the rule that if no one has any valid move left, the game ends.
It's like Go board game
but isn't othello and reversi one in the same
i need this becuase i have this on my nes but i dont know how to play
If you have a phone download OthelloQuest you can play on that.
Did anyone else think this was what go was before watching this channel?
thanks a lot brother
My twin played this game at the secondary school on 16 June 2023
good teaching
The first time I ever played this game, it was the NES version of the game. I lost, obviously.
Chess will be so proud
I knew this game, but it was named "Reversi".
Othello is my favorite game
I love this game too!!
I watched this video because I want to play Othello on Nintendo.
Isn't this called Reversi?
Thank you
Oh it’s that game Hatsune Miku always beats me at
I ordered this game online. If I was playing, I would say white goes first to make it synonymous with chess, so that it makes sense to me.
I bought this game 4 months ago
But I am just waiting for you,I only learn how to play when you post a video on how to play it.
What other games have you bought and are you waiting on me for?
@Triple S Games I didn’t buy this, but I think you should make a how to play video on The game of life junior.
Thank you,😂
You're welcome 😊
Computer science coursework brought me here
Othello Othello shalala😂
Also called Reversi
